About the ticking, both of my new Seagate HDD have that issue. I am really worry about it. My WD doesn't make ANY noice like that so far, and yesterday tried out a "Virgin" out-of package WD Green 1TB hdd, also, no noice too.

I will not getting any Seagate products until we ( user ) get a good answer from Seagate's Tech and confirmation on hardware stability.

Oh no, time to shop for WD 1TB, not joking, if you feel unsafe, time to get WD and RAID 1 at least it, I need to check the Tick Tick sound.
It is kind of weird, since the drop back to 3 years warranty for Barracuda effective from 3 Jan. 09, then 7200.12 has 2 Jan. 14, it means, either the drive really produced before Jan. Or they did it for lolz, deep inside they don't want to drop to 3 years?

AFAIK, 7200.11 problem is its firmware, not plate or servo motor. Tick2 sound more related to servo motor right.

my 7200.12 so far doesnt exhibit that problem yet. Maybe I rarely cold reboot biggrin.gif

hehe... since roxy bring this matter up...

yep, according to SeaTools or even HardDisk Sentinel, :
hard disk model ID (from software and sticker clearly different). However, I am a bit confuse when software report that this hard disk has 16 heads?

Isn't 16 heads for 4 platters?

7200.12 500GB use single platters with 500GB per plate density (highest from seagate so far). So it clearly different from 7200.11 which use 250GB and 340GB per plate. hmm...

To check warranty though, I can use either 3500418AS or ST3500410AS. Both model with same serial number (?) give 2 Jan 2014 warranty coverage.

What I can assume now, 7200.12 use latest generation plate (500GB per plate ... yes this 7200.12 is slim hard disk one) but perhaps use the same circuit as 7200.11 but with different firmware.

Added on February 6, 2009, 12:03 pmI did my small benchmark using HDTune, 7200.12 clearly faster than 7200.11. 125MB per second transfer read (at the most outer ring).... and not burst data rate speed.

Found this piece of info... quite worth to read especially the dialogue between customer and seagate staff and also the benchmark of 7200.12 using hdtune (hdtune show model number as ST3500410AS instead of ST3500418AS)

Brother, do you have any idea what you're talking about man? CHS is completely irrelevant for modern HD for very, very, very long time already. Just a way to tell software the size, even that is largely replaced by LBA. Tkae a look here for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder-head-sector

What I've read largely agrees with the post in hardforums. ST3500418AS or ST3500410AS only known difference is 410AS lower accoustic (noise) according to Seagate specs and meets some low halogen use spec which 418AS does not. Note that BOTH are 7200.12 (7200.11 500GB model numbers are ST3500620AS or ST3500320AS). Performance difference, if any, is unclear. Some people have suggested warranty difference but seems unlikely and results from confusion. For the warranty all that matters is when the drive shipped. If the drive shipped before 4th Jan it is 5 years. If not is 3 years. A number of 7200.12 shipped before 4th January (in Malaysia shippsed on 2nd January seems common) so come with 5 years.

P.S. From what I can tell, Seagate site doesn't care about model number provided it is valid. Only serial number matters, This is understable since it's the serial number which tells them when it was shipped. When actually RMA the drive, you should make sure put proper serial number but otherwise doesn't matter I suspect

I just bought a 7200.12 500GB 16MB cache, similar to the TS' model.. just within a week, im having problems with it. I try to copy paste between different hard disks, after a while it started to give like a beep sound. not a click sound though..

now i regret buying seagate.

ps, i also have the 7200.11 series. 500gb and 750gb.
first i had a 500gb 7200.11 which failed which I then RMAed and they gave me a new 500GB 7200.11 which began to show failure 1-2 months ago. then i bought a new 500gb 7200.12 thinking problems are fixed.

unfortunately, im stuck here. sigh.

the 750gb 7200.11 harddisks are still working at the moment but not sure when those are gonna fail. Sigh.

i have a 160gb seagate hdd but that's been much more reliable than all the other hard disks.

western digital from now on.

it is logic saying that 7200.12 is rebadged 7200.11, do you think seagate simply 'dumped' the problemed drives? that will make them a great financial loss, CEO get fired...chief engineer get fired...all that...

so it is wisely for us to bypass the so-called 12 generation 7200.12, and see how they perform in 13th gen, as many foreigners review that their 7200.12 death after several months of use and they also thinking that 12th are problem-free drive when they buy it.

you can always check review at popular online shop like newegg.com...

seagate used to be quite reliable drive, in the past i only bought seagate, but now dare not risk the fate of data...
