The Samsung Magnet (SGH-A257) is a cheaper type of candy bar smart phone. The emphasis behind this phone is to make sure that it is friendly to people’s wallets, rather than being a full featured phone that can do practically everything you can think of. It looks like a standard blackberry phone. It comes in an orange color, with a QWERT keyboard for you to type with and the features you’d expect like a camera. It has a decent sized LCD screen, so that you can see what you’re doing. I’m going to go into detail on the Samsung Magnet and give you a good review of what this smart phone is about.

Some of the main features of the Magnet:

LCD Display
QWERT keyboard
MP3 Player
Speaker phone
2M Digital Camera/Video Recorder
Browser (XHTML, Java 2.0, etc)

I think the most important thing to know about this phone is that it is marketed towards teenagers. More and more of the younger generations are using phones now. They want features like a full keyboard for texting and instant messaging on the phone. That’s the main reason that it has a full QWERT keyboard. A lot of the other Samsung phones, like the Impression, have the keyboard slide out from the side. This one is much simpler with the keyboard on the front of it.

The Samsung Magnet has a pretty decent sized LDC screen at 240×320 pixels. It’s a decent size to be able to navigate around the web, instant message and watch videos. These are all important features on a phone that you would expect a teenager or young adult to be using. The 2 megapixel camera is pretty good for a cell phone, which will provide high quality pictures and allow you to record video with it as well.

This smart phone acts as a complete MP3 player. It plays many different audio files, so there won’t be any compatibility problems you’ll find with other phones like the iPhone. It functions very easily for you to upload your music onto it. You can do it via USB connection or through a Bluetooth 2.0 connection. The phone is just as versatile as an iPod, which most people will be able to appreciate that type of quality.

The Magnet contains a lot of the extra features that you would expect. It has a WAP browser with full XHTML and Java support. A lot of people take such a feature for granted because you don’t realize how important it is until you don’t have it. A lot of cell phones don’t stay up to date with web page standards. That means some pages you visit will look awful or broken. This phone keeps everything up to date, so all pages will look the same as they would on a computer. There is also the availability to instant message on the phone, which is very popular with teenagers.

It contains all the standard features that you’d expect to find on a phone like email, speaker phone, mp3 ring tones, call vibration, etc. It contains most of the little features that all phones have because they’re very easy to add. It contains the core of what you’ll need for a cell phone. It isn’t designed for people that are running a business off their phone. A more sophisticated and expensive one is needed for something like that.

The whole point of the Samsung Magnet is to be cheap. A lot of us want to have a nice phone that we can text, browse, take pictures and listen to music without having to buy an expensive phone. We’re just looking for the features that get us through our days. Most of the smart phones you’ll find today are really trying to turn the phone into a computer, when all you really want is a phone that is an mp3 player or just a browser.

This is my review of the Samsung Magnet. As you can see it is a pretty decent smart phone. You’re going to get most of the features you’d find in any other type of phone, except at a price that is much cheaper. Currently the magnet is being released through AT&T, but the price of it hasn’t been released. It will probably be much cheaper than the Samsung’s Impression phone.

Yeap.. certainly looks cute! Those orange shell around it make it look like a tough shock-proof phone instead though.
