Most likely they are faking the RROD. Check out this video on how to fake RROD on your Jasper without voiding the warranty :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6N71lAJQg2sBe careful of what you hear on the net. Most of them are PS3 fanboys trying to discredit Microsoft. The RROD issue has already been solved with the Falcon revision 3 onwards. Now, the problem is with E74.
I have a very reliable source telling me that the Jasper's failure rate is within the industrial standards (3-5%) and they do not die from RROD, just from other issues (faulty DVD drive, failing HDD etc.). My source is an employee of Microsoft Xbox development division.
Irregardless (double negative), hardware failure is STILL occuring. E74 seem to be the new trend. There is nothing much that can be done except sending the console back for repairs.

Believe me, Xbox 3 is definitely NOT going to have hardware failures. Well. It has to. The next Halo is already in development for "next-gen Xbox" (2012).
Think
Xbox 360 = Vista. It works but it fails at times. You get frustrated. You want to ditch it, yet you still believe it does good.
Now think
Xbox 3 = Windows 7 . Tweaked, optimized, corrected, bug-free. Small annoyances that's all. Smooth sailing all the way.
One thing Microsoft does well in future products - - they learn from their "mishaps".
