ya you can do that...i personally like hitachi drives. very very quiet and reliable. as far as i am concern, a hard disk in a laptop has to be very quiet, minimal/no vibrations and not produce too much heat.

the hitachi drives do all the above. i looked at the wd scorpio black and blue and the hitachi 7k320 and 5k500.b drives. i didnt want to go seagate as some of my friends who had seagate drives has had some kind of problems, of course many others out there would have had a perfect one, but i guess its something personal.

wd drives..they are ok, but some of the ones i have used are a bit noisy for my liking. my alubook already came with a hitachi drive and i was impressed by it, so i looked up the 7k320 and the 5k500.b drive. the 7k320 is a 7200rpm drive and the 5k500.b is a 5400rpm drive.

i wanted performance but i was not ready to sacrifice on heat and noise. after lots of advice and reading, i decided on the 5k500.b drives. these drives are supposed to be as fast as the 7200rpm drives and in some case, outperforms them. they're really quiet too. check them out, you wont regret it.

I am using Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM Hard Disk Drive on my Macbook Alu 2.4 now.

After changing only I know that the default HDD which is a FUJITSU still beat my new WD Scorpio Black in terms of vibration. The WD will have more vibration because it is running 7200RPM not 5400RPM. Not that it is very serious, is just that you can feel it when you are placing your hands on the palm area of the MacBook Alu. When I was using the Fujitsu HDD, I cannot feel anything.

Well, of course I know that nothing is perfect in this world.

Apart from that, my startup speed with the WD Scorpio Black is now 25 seconds while the Fujitsu was around 30++ seconds, applications are more snappier when I clicked on them.

If you think you can sacrifice some battery life (which I don't think is a lot) and doesn't mind about the vibration, by all means go ahead and buy that drive.

Can anyone give some feedback on the WD Scorpio Blue 500GB WD5000BEVT on a MacBook Alu? Interested in trying it on my MacBook. But, after intensive googling, I found out that the WD5000BEVT model will cause some beeping sound. Really hope someone with this HDD on a MacBook Alu can clarify this.

P/S:
There are 2 versions on the Scorpio Black. Make sure you get the (WDxxxx"BEKT") version of Scorpio Black as this does not have the free-fall sensors in it. The MacBook may cause some beeping sound if you have one with the free-fall sensors (WDxxxx"BJKT") included in the HDD while it conflicts with the sensors that is in the MacBook.

Regards,
Joe

Mine only used it 1 month on 500GB WD Scorpio Blue. Got problem on wake up after sleep. Check on service they said hard disk problem. Already change to Seagate 500GB but i still like using WD than Seagate.

Can u elaborate more on the "after waking up from sleep" problem? So it is the HDD problem??

sifu , i need some help for macbook alu. 2.0ghzhiy version. Can i upgrade the ram with kingston value ram ,and western digital 320gb 7200rpm hdd?will it compatible?newb here.

To answer your question, Yes, you can put a 7200RPM into your MacBook.
It is because of the 7200RPM spindle speed of your HDD, this makes your MacBook vibrate even more than your stock HDD.
I've used a WD 320GB 7200RPM HDD and installed it into my MacBook 2.4 Alu,
I took it off because the vibration it gave out was too uncomfortable for me.
If you willing to trade the quiet-ness for speed, by all means go ahead.
Applications on a 7200RPM HDD are more snappier meaning they are more responsive.

Now, I'm using a 500GB 5400 RPM WD Scorpio Blue installed into my MacBook which is quiet and quite fast I would say and for the extra 180GB you get.

For RAM, I'm using Crucial RAM 2X2 2GB=4GB.
I'm using this since the 1st day I got my MacBook Alu from Machines as I requested for an upgrade on my RAM.

Regards.

Guys, What do you think about putting an SSD into a MacBook 2.4Ghz Aluminum Model? I yearn for super fast boot up speed. So far, the best bet would be OCZ Agility 120GB or OCZ Summit 120GB. Both cost around RM1500+. Given that I'm just using 40GB out of a 500GB HDD I have. I think I can live with just 120GB.

Wanna know what you guys think about this. Thanks !

I see. I'll put test here once I got it. I'll be most probably compare it to WD Scorpio Blue 500GB and OCZ Agility 120GB.
LOL, one with 8MB cache and another with 64MB cache. Let's see how it goes.

1st impression, FAST ! biggrin.gif Just cloned my main drive into my SSD. Gosh, everything is so much snappier. Launching Microsoft Word used to take 8-11 bounce on my previous Western Digital 500GB Scorpio Blue, how about now you ask? It is like opening Safari, just took a second. Photoshop CS4 took 2 sec to launch. Best of all, I can't seem to feel any vibration on my palm-rest area anymore. That may increase of my Battery Life Hopefully?
Played around with Command+A in my Application Folder and launch every App I have. It just took seconds to launch everything. The dock suddenly became super long (without lag). Haha. cool2.gif

SSD Rocks ! laugh.gif

may i know how do you do the cloning? software?

Google for Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Just plug your drive into a USB 2.5" Enclosure. Open you software, press "Clone". Done.

wow... impressive.. how about the battery life? any changes?

Haven't really test the battery life. But, I think it should be better. I think most probably I'm gonna do a clean install of Snow Leopard back again.
Don't really feel good about clones. I think doing a clean install is gonna be faster. Not too sure about that, but it gives me a good feeling about it. smile.gif

In case anyone do wonder, I'm using a MacBook Aluminum 2.4Ghz. No problems with SATA issues compared to the new Aluminum MacBook Pros about the beach ball thing won't stop spinning. icon_rolleyes.gif

You should not open a new topic to ask a question.

Anyway, to answer your question.
Yes it does. SSD are 2.5" in size. Same size as your current HDD. smile.gif

Hi Guys.

After few months using my Intel X-25M Gen 2 80GB SSD on my MacBook Aluminum 2.4Ghz (Late 2008).
Before that, I tried Scorpio Blue 500GB and Scorpio Black 320GB. None of these are up to my expectations.

I would say it's worth the money mainly because ;

It is extremely quiet with no rotation speed, it was horrible on Scorpio Black due to it's 7200RPM vibration.
Yes, as some forumers reported, the clicking noise in Scorpio Blue is extremely annoying. SSD no noise at all.
Boot up speed decrease from 30 seconds (Scorpio Blue) to 17 seconds on my SSD using SL 10.6.3.
You can feel the world of differences when you are launching apps.
Example, launching Microsoft Word 2008 takes only a bounce on my dock. No waiting time for apps to be launched. Any app will launch instantly.
So, imagine brows.gif
Boosting some of the battery life ? I felt that way though. It might not be true.

Yes, it may be a hefty price tag. However, if you have the extra money to spend on, get an SSD. It's really worth it in my opinion. smile.gif
