i upgraded 2x4GB muskin 1066 DDR3 ram few days ago. ran apple hardware test(although most say not realiable), normal web surfing, light photoshopping and played some games. so far so good.

*btw, i'm using MBP 15" 2010, bought it end of Q3.
*
can you give me the model number? How much does it cost? I plan to upgrade mine.

I see what you mean. That's actually 2 x 8GB modules. Nice, I didn't know the MBP supports up to 16GB. very good to know. A bit overpriced though.
*
So far MBP max is just 8 GB, maybe the latest model could max to 16 GB. I'm using 8 GB it's more than enough. Most of the time i only use 4 GB and free 4 GB, max usage so far is up to 6 GB only. Most of the time i open PD+WinXP , MS Excel, Adobe PS, Safari, Itunes and some background aps. PS i can open a lot of picture before it max out 8 GB.

Thanks for the advice.

I have upgraded my MacBook unibody:

1. Stock 2 GB RAM upped to 8GB (4GB X 2) Corsairs. About RM270.
Salesperson helped to change the RAM. My 1st Mac, so it was educational to see how it is done.
We tried 4GB first and then 8GB - not sure if it will work. - It works!!.
Result: Noticeable faster. I don't have heavy duty programs but still pleased with the result.
Recommend RAM upgrade for best bang for the buck outcome.

2. Replaced Stock Hitachi 160GB 54000 rpm with Hitachi 500GB 7200rpm drive.
Sourced from OWC, Also got an external USB 3.0 casing and back-up software bundle promo.
Altogether RM354 including shipping. Worth it as a comparable WD 7200rpm at that time was RM260+ (but no stock!!).
Only problem - had to wait almost 1 month for shipment to arrive.
Thanks to Soon Wai's advice, the installation was a breeze, using the new HDD in external casing first, doing a carbon copy clone and then switching the HDD inside. Some steps in between but Carbon Clone is very good in doing step by step guide.
Boot up, and all is well.
Except MS Office 2011. Lost activation and had to reinstall from ori disc again. Then all is OK. Not sure if other programs are affected as I have not tried them all since changing the HDD.
Result of HDD upgrade - not as noticeable as RAM upgrade. But much more space now. Drive is also very quiet like the stock drive.

Will use old HDD as back up disk and continue. No more hardware upgrades - I think.

Thank you Soon Wai. Appreciate your tips as it helped me to prepare.

5400 to 7200 i think not much different in term of speed. but if u go for SSD u can feel it.

lowyat plaza is selling the 1066 at rm 125 only..1333 is riskier for error.

hi guys,

thinking to upgrade the 4gb ram of the MBP to 8gb. is there any shops in LYP that actually does trade-in (take the old RAM back?)? or do i need to sell them over at garage sales? tongue.gif

thanks...
*
i don't think there is any that accept trade in. Even if they do i think the price will chase u away..

actually my purpose of buying 1333 is bcuz next time at least got higher resale value?
but oh well, already bought it so yeahhh

i think need to do some homework on how to wipe my netbook hd and put inside my umb ady

1066 should have better resale value not 1333. 1333 is very common, common = cheaper. 1066 will be rare later even it's rare now tongue.gif

actually the more free space (by percentage of the hdd total space), the faster ur computer will run. but not that noticeable la
i think high performance ram is only for overclocking purposes. if u dont overclock, they will perform just like standard ram. the ram speed is tied to ur cpu's FSB. correct me if im wrong.

try adjust the ram made available for ur virtual machine. maybe half of ur total ram? 2gb is fine for me... for fusion3 + win7 32-bit la. upgrade to 8gb if u dont think u have enough.
*
my experience with 8gb. i can tell u 4gb is quite sufficient. 8gb really hard to utilised all. I use PD6+window xp, excel, safari, movie, Photoshop and etc only reach 6gb once... Normally usage level at 4gb only.

yea. brand new ddr2 2gb was about rm80-90. really cannot understand RAM economics haha
*
i think those ram not in production or reduce production, popular ram is cheaper. Normally when i buy pc/laptop i will try to put in as much ram as possible, else later the ram will be hard to find..

8gb also hardly can utilized all. 1 DVD is just 4gb++, u can put the whole DVD into your ram. 16gb not sure wanna use for what apps. Is there any single fill more than 4gb (so far i saw blu-ray).

indeed SSD is way more expensive than RAM, but 4gb->8gb makes not much different if you don't open big file or super multi tasking. SSD will improve your daily experience, even when you start up your mac. So you decide. My advice 8gb not necessary (might be waste of money), save more for SSD, or don't upgrade at all.
