How much is 2x2GB RAM nowadays?
and how much improvement can you feel with the extra 2GB?
*
its currently abt rm300 for 2 pieces of 2GB

its generally feels more smoother/responsive..

general guidelines for myself is, when there is pageout occurs.. meaning there is not enough RAM for ur mac to work with

i upgraded my mbp 13" (mid 2009) from 2GB to 4GB ram (regular ddr3 corsair sodimm sticks), and under process/activity viewer macos has access to 3.75GB out of 4GB of ram of which 0.25GB is for use with 9400M

MBP 13" uses DDR3 not DDR2

DDR3 2GB SODIMM currently is RM150-RM155 per stick

I head MBP very picky on ram..so is better upgrade the ram at apple center. EPIcenter give the best price on upgrading ram add Rm299 for 4GB.

However, some user claim and prove is stable for using outside ram like kingstan & corsair...  as for me i still considering.
*
i dun think intel/nvidia based MBP are picky on ram..

as long as its jedec compliant, it should not be a problem...

i won be suprised epicentre will oso use standard ram for the upgrades

last i check.. apple compatible ram 2GB DDR3 SODIMM costs rm180 a pop

@jinaun,
I'm pretty sure the Apple Resellers will give U KTA RAMs; which are basically Kingston RAMS but tested for compatibility with Apple products.
*
i agree bigger resellers would use KTA or other certified RAM for apple to avoid any complications but i do know of some smaller reseller/retailers that would use normal kingston/etc rams

but i think most of the ram problem with apple are on ddr2, where else i've oledi tested 3 macbooks pros that uses standard ddr3 and they works well , touch wood

Not sure whether 4Gx1 and the original slot 1Gx1 or 5G total works for 13" MBP.  Or does both slots must be of same size RAM.
*
it works best when 2 slots are using the same module

if ur running 1 x 4G and 1 x 1G, dual channel will onli work with the first 2G rams(1 x 1GB stick and the first 1 GB boundary of the 4GB stick) and 3rd GB onwards its on single channel

What type of Ram they giving? Original Apple?
*
most likely will be kingston KTA rams, or other apple approved/validated ram

what is intellipark?
*
when 8 sec the hdd is idle, the hdd parks its head to save power. and unpark again when there is read/write request, that act if load/unload makes a faint click sound.

if you have SMART reader, you can see the "attribute load/unload cycle" increment by one whenever u hear that click sound.

my 3 days old scorpio scores abt 670 on the counter for that load/unload cycle.. which avg abt 220 per day, which i use onli abt 4-5 hours.

after 1 year, the counter will increase to 80k+ and 5 years will be over 500k

but scorpio has a design of 600k cycles so its not a problem.. but hell its annoying

* but i read the web that the WD GP harddrives have such issue(duno to call this a feature/issue/problem/etc) too.. 8 sec parking.. but if its run 24/7 and especially under linux which poll the hdd over 10-12 sec.. you can have over 200 clicks per hour which will of coz make some people panic coz the load/unload cycle specified for GP is 300K

i still dont quite understand what are the difference some salesman in lowyat offer mer KTA rams instead of KVR and they cost lot more
a 4gb total 2 stick of ddr3 1066mhz hes offering me rm 550 sad.gif
while czone only ask for 480!
but i remember czone staff told me its just compatibility issue that could generate error
other than that performance there isnt any difference
true/false?
*
different shops has different prices, some jual banyak untung sikit, others jual sikit untung banyak.. depends on their profit target.

KTA rams as well as other validated/approved ram for apple undergo additional testing/compatibility tests to ensure that it works properly with apple hardwares.

yeah sure you can put in KVR ram and it would still work.. but getting KTA rams give a peace of mind.. smile.gif and possibly avoids any possible compatibility issues that may occur or at least eliminates ram as a possible source of problem during troubleshooting

Yeah.. I do feel that SSD prices are a bit too high for my liking..  however I've been seeing mixed reviews on the wd 320gb black scorpio & seagate hard disk..  Any 7200 hard disk you guys would recommend? thanks
*
i can't say much abt seagate*'s but i'm using scorpio black.. and it works terrific on my mbp

*read somewhere abt seagate's compatibility problem with mid09 mbp

Do you experience any of the problems here?

"A light bulb then went off… we started to associate the panics with movement. Then it hit us like 3 tons of bowling balls, the Scorpio has built-in shock protection. The ShockGuard technology that WD employs is interfering with the Macs own head parking technology. We placed another call into Other World and returned the second Scorpio in exchange for the slightly more expensive Seagate Momentus (which does not have built-in shock protection). After installing the Momentus and cloning over the now tired image, we haven’t had a single kernal panic. All that said, if you have a MacBook or MacBook Pro, DO NOT upgrade to the WD Scorpio line of hard drives. They are definitely fine drives, just not fine for MacBook/Pro owners."

i'm using the non-shock protection version aka non free fall sensor which is the WD3200BEKT, i duno whether u can install hdd with free fall sensor and disable the macbook's in build shock sensor or not

i believe as long it has standard jedec spd settings of 7-7-7 at 1066, it should work fine

i have a question about the RAM upgrade.

I got 2 macbook pro 13.3" but i only have budget to buy 2 x 2GB ram.

If you put 1GB + 2GB for each, will this combination cause problem to degrade the performance?

Thanks.
*
it will work fine.. but your mbp may take some performance hit as the after the 1gb boundry of ur 2GB stick will onli work at single channel

thanks... then i will upgrade 1 mbp 1st... and make it 2x2GB.

So how much i can sell my 2x1GB? can give me some price guide?
*
i recommend that u keep it for warranty purposes.. if u send ur mac for warranty.. u can put back the original ram, unless ofc oz ur using KTA or apple certified/validated rams

and ur 2x1gb is apple oem ram, which does not carry any warranty if used outside its original place.. and it maybe difficult to sell unless u priced it very attractively
