Hi ,

I'm interested in upgrading my MBP's ram to 4GB as well as the Internal HDD to 500GB or 1TB if possible . I want to ask , Is there any ways to upgrade it internally ? Or I have to use those ''cpu-like'' External Harddisk for it ?

I'm planning to install Windows via bootcamp so I want to give a fair amount of Hard Disk space to both of them . I have been doing some googling but it seems that everyone is either using the external harddisk for the 1TB drive ( Bootcamp or not , No idea ) or Debating with each other about the HDD's size . I'm not able to find anything related to my question .

My conclusion : - Upgrade the HDD internally... Is it possible ? Does MBP support SATA as well ? Or just ATA ? Googling has made me confused ... icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

My MBP : Late December (2008) , 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo .

Need any other information ? Just ask me ... Thank you for helping !

Can macbookpro , late dec 2008 early January 2009 model
. 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo supports up to 1tb hdd yet ? Can I change the hdd internally rather than running it externally ? I have googled alot , read that a lot that people are using it externally. I want to run it internally as I want to install windows in it .

the only 1 TB notebook hard drive i know of is from Western Digital, but it's a 12.5mm model instead of the more regular 9.5mm...meaning it wont fit in a MacBook. another 1 TB notebook drive is from a brand named Pure Silicon, but its an SSD. and very expensive tongue.gif. i believe what u meant by 'cpu-like' hard drives are the big ones? you can just call it a desktop HDD..the proper name is 3.5" HDD. Notebook drives are 2.5" HDD. there are also 1.8" HDDs.

most computers today (actually, i think ALL computers) use SATA (serial ATA). ATA (its normally called PATA or IDE) is a very outdated technology. however some shops still sell IDE drives, so be careful. anyway, your best choice now is to upgrade to a 500gb HDD because its widely available and of very good value (around RM280). a lot of us here (including myself) are using a WD Scorpio Blue, another good one is the Hitachi TravelStar 5k500.

about bootcamp, AFAIK bootcamp is for internal HDD. running another OS from USB would be very slow.

i don't mean to offend, but try to learn more on these stuff before you spend ur money on it. i'm just concerned if a shop try to con you. to summarize, what you should be looking for is a 2.5" SATA HDD, the 9.5mm variant.

and yes, both RAM and HDD can be upgraded yourself, but make sure you know what you're doing

Ok thanks .

I will try to look for 500HD HDD then , And the Kingston brand RAM as mentioned in earlier post. So you meant SATA ( Serial ATA ) , = Serial-ATA on my MBP's info ? Correct me if I'm wrong ...

It's 500GB Internal HDD , 2.5'' SATA HDD(Serial ATA) , 9.5mm Variant . 2 x 2GB Kingston DDR RAM.

I'm planning to get the tech experts to do it for me . Like in Apple Retail ? Do they help to do that ?

I don't mind paying them to do it for me as I am no expert in this . Might as well just to get them to do it rather than me spoiling it . Oh yea , I noticed something as well ... Does the Mhz matters on the ram ?

I have seen it on my lappy saying that 1GB DDR3 1067Mhz ... What if I get higher MHZ or Lower ? Will it affect anything ? And does it matter whether 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM to use on my HDD ?

MBP's Internal HDD / RAM

You should get DDR3 1067MHz SODIMM. 1333MHz is also backward compatible. But your mac will only run at 1067MHz.

As of HDD, the faster the RPM, the faster the drive access and write files. In layman terms. But many cases it's matter of seconds or minutes. 7200rpm drive for laptop also come in smaller capacity at the moment. 320GB WD Black is the common one. The 500gb n 1TB drive you seek is still at 5400RPM only.

But MBP still cannot support 1TB internal HDD yet right ? Or have not been proven safe ?

How much you bought for the 1pc of 2GB DDR3 ? cause I see the price is increasing..
By the way, I upgraded my HD to 500GB WD Scorpio Blue (Model : WDC WD5000BEVT-22ZAT0) .. till now no problem..

How much did you pay for it ? It's internal HDD right ?

The Snow Leopard Upgrade CD/DVD actually helps you to install the drivers needed by Windows 7 automatically after you booted into Windows 7 right ? Difference between 32 and 64 = ? hmm.gif hmm.gif

You only have to install the drivers when you're booted into windows for the first time right ? What do we need for that ?

Hey guys , I would like to know . I want to upgrade my HDD to 500GB (Internal) .

But before that , I would like to backup my data . But what is INCLUDED the backup and what is not ? I guess I have to use Time Machine to backup my data . Correct me if I'm wrong .

I definitely need to backup my musics , movies , Programs like Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office , Adium , and Photos.

Is it advisable to copy the programs into a USB drive 1 by 1 or just back it up using Time Machine ?

Can the program still run if I were to just copy the folder into a USB and paste it into my new HDD when it's ready ?

How much is a Snow Leopard Pack in Malaysia ? For a Single User.

The other alternative sounds more complicated . So I can use time machine for pretty much everything ? Including the folders of my own ? So just backup using time machine from the old hdd then restore the content in the new hdd . Correct ?

Anyone in low yat plaza helps people to change hardware and also sell them ? Mac compatible that is.

Time Machine backs up an exact total copy of your current drive with nothing left behind (unless u specifically say what you don't want to backup).
To restore just change the drive, plug in your time machine backup drive, then use the DVD, start the installer, and restore from time machine and it will look exactly like how it is before.

I'm not sure where changes Mac hardware, I changed mine myself.

What DVD ?

You mean just change my HDD first , Then start the restoring process right ? Kinda confusing ~.~ Sorry

Nope you don't install Snow Leopard again. When you restore, it just copies your entire backup (including your OS, so all your settings still remain) back to your newly inserted HDD, which will take some time depending on both drive's speed and the size of your backup.
(Mine took about 2 1/2 hours with 7200rpm internal, Firewire 800 External. Mine's probably very big.)

You CAN install SL and then restore, but I'm not too sure what will happen to your settings, I've never tried that.
*
Oh , But it would work as well if I restore first and install Snow Leopard right ? Just to make sure my settings are all intact .

You just restore. Don't have to install again.
Firewire 800 is backwards compatible. You can get a cable that looks like this:
9pin to 6pin cable

The Problem is , I'm using Leopard now . I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard ... What I don't know is to upgrade into the new HDD first or restore from backup then upgrade ?
