Hi Mac lovers,

Just bought my first apple..

user posted image

I'm doing a lot of photoshop and FCP on this beautiful machine. The one problem I face is when I'm importing video from my old 8mm camcorder. The FCP will crash. After googling, the common opinion is I need more RAM. At least 12GB or 16GB is better..

Since this is my first apple product and I'm over 40 yr old guy.. not really techie.. is corsair or kingston 4GB PC1333 DDR3 SODIMM suitable for my iMac?? sweat.gif

thanks

Masculine, I don't believe you need such much of RAM just to import movies from 8mm video. Is your 8mm analog or using iLink (firewire) transfer?

My old cam is 11 year old TRV-320E using firewire to transfer. Problem is, I have lotsa tapes of my kids (since they're babies - now they're teenagers).. I delayed transferring them until vista comes along and decided not to recognize the old cam..

I have no problem with photo, and new AVCHD video. Only that whenever I'm transferring with my old cam, it will transferring for only 5 minutes and after that FCP crash. Any suggestion?

Anyway, the RAM is so dirt cheap... and now I understand why people love apple products even though I'm still learning the interface... wub.gif (now that 13" macbook pro looks so damn tempting.. and oohh.. the iphone too.. damnnn.. doh.gif )

For your info I still using one of my old-school PowerMac which have only 1.5GB RAM and still can capture all the video via Firewire (even HDV format). The best you can do is at FCP under System Setting, try to limit capture now to 4 minutes. As my case I'm capturing all video under iMovie, then edit it at Final Cut Express..

For the RAM I advise to get certified KTA RAM as it does affect on warranty, and also when comes to the performance. Try to search in the LYN, I do sure some of the forumner do sell KTA RMA cheaper than u can get at Apple center..

I'm still very new to apple. My iMac running with lion OS. Somehow, i cannot capture my video using imovie (the old firewire cam). So far only fcp x recognize my old camera.

I have this 1TB maxtor external HDD I bought some 3 years ago.. use it for my window files... "strangely" enough my mac can read it and I can transfer my old files in the HDD to my imac... I always thought this can't be done because of the different formatting.. and of the things that keep me delaying for getting into macs...

Happy to report that KVR1333D3S9/4G works on my iMac. I just install 2x4GB so now I have 12GB total. Installation is painless for less than 5 minutes. The hardest part is lifting the iMac tongue.gif

I bought the RAM at lowyat Cycom for RM67 a piece. I bought 3 sticks for RM200. Regret not buying 4... funny that price of the same stick with exactly same brand differ from shop to shop in lowyat... some shop is selling for RM80 and cannot bargain. doh.gif
