i have a newbie question. Does the imac use a lot of electricity?
*
It depends on which model you have... Core i5 and i7 use considerably more power than C2D siblings... so as those with custom ATI 4850 GC...

The current models have continuous max power rating of 241W and 365W for 21.5" and 27" respectively, so that should give you some idea, but it's usually way below that since you're not loading both CPU and GPU 24/7... Previous generation iMacs are around 180W if I'm not too mistaken...

You've just got the iMac recently...? And you do a lot of heavy stuff on your iMac...?

When I first got my Mac Pro running at a constant 360W, my bill shot up RM 100...

However, I did read of complains in recent months about power bill shot up considerably, even though they don't use Macs... tongue.gif

My March bill shot up from RM 500+ to over RM 750 for no apparent reason... At first I though my GTX 260 I was using on my MP drew too much power, despite the idling CPU usage. This month it hovers around RM 600 when I got rid of the card in favour of HD 5850... rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

Without prying into details, it's actually hard to lay the finger on the pretty white skin of the iMac... On a more serious note, lower your screen brightness, set up your power management settings to lower screen brightness and send the hard drive to sleep after 10-15 minutes, don't run a gajillion apps at the same time and as a last resort... use power saving lightbulbs thumbup.gif

as far as i know, there's no limit on HDD size, as long as it's a 2.5", 9mm-thick SATA. biggest right now shud be 640gb. i can confirm with u 250gb can support la tongue.gif

dvd drive i dun think can easily upgrade. but i suppose if u can find an old macbook superdrive, can get someone with experience to install for you

This.

And you're better off getting an external USB DVD drive.

I'm planning to update my Leopard to Snow Leopard. Would there be a significant noticeable improvement or am i just wasting my money? and also I'm using an IMAC what is the maximum amount of RAM it can sustain?

i didnt notice much performance improvements apart from time machine backups, but the tidier expose is nice tongue.gif also, openCL and grand central is still not big right now, so there's not much benefit of upgrading to SL.

Which imac do u have? Different models have different maximum RAM

Original Hard Disk : Seagate Momentous 5400 250GB

Upgraded Hard Disk : Hitachi TravelStar 5400 B version 500GB Hard Disk

Before upgrading, went to Machines, Max Studio, asking about the upgrade. Most inane answer came from MacStudio. Best answer came from machines.

Bought Philips #0 Screwdriver RM6.80

Bought Torx T6 Screwdriver RM14.80 (Comes in one set)

Bought the HDD RM230

Testing it out now. Upgrading not that difficult.

I think its better to confirm it with the apple care center or maybe you could ask those apple resellers... They do provide RAM upgrading services and also the price.. But I think it would be cheaper to self upgrade... The model for the RAM is 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SO-DIMM SDRAM... Should find something similar and should be compatible.
