Check the setting:
http://osxdaily.com/2010/05/15/stop-the-ma...n-from-dimming/
Keyboard backlit is under "Keyboard".

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4882

If the auto adjust is on the Mac will use the ambient sensor to adjust screen and keyboard brightness. Pressing the keyboard backlit shortcut will show a no entry sign on screen.

If the auto adjust is turn off, you have to manually adjust the brightness via the keyboard shortcut.

If you tried both still doesn't work, send to service center.

You will need at lease 10.6.6 if upgrade from 10.5.x.
You can jump to 10.7.3 by performing clean install.

There are plenty of guide. Here's one of it: http://osxdaily.com/2011/06/21/mac-os-x-li...tall-explained/

Please be aware, by clean install mean you going to erase/ reformat/ repartition your hard drive, make sure you backup your data first if you still need them.

Remember to test your 10.7 installer before erasing your boot drive. Later no Mac to use biggrin.gif

Yes you can. But if the problem is due to software, you will clone the problems over too.

That's strange. Have try turn on the virtual keyboard and check if the key press are register? Usually when a key faulty, it won't work. It's a USB or wireless?

somehow this happens!

1. playing avi files will no longer have sound, got pix but no sound (Mplayer)
2. my Quicktime not working
3. my media keys on keyboard also not working, cant play, next, etc.

... sound no problem as itunes still can play music

-- please advice.

-macbook air 13 Mac OS X Lion 10.7
*
1. Try different file, different player.
2. Not working as how? Can't start? Can't play? Download the last Quicktime Updater and try. Or the last combo OS Updater.
3. Check your keyboard setup. Have you try reset PRAM? Have you try restarting? Have you install any 3rd party app that overwrite keyboard shortcut function??

It doesn't matter where you bought it. They should be very lease try to help you even if your Mac is expired from warranty and EOL model.

------------------------------

Guys, please be careful where you send your Mac to service. Be sure they know what they doing. This is a very bad example: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/05/04/self-c...hed-repair-job/

A MBP have a 10x larger Li Ion battery pack than an iPhone. And we've tried combustion on it before, it's not something funny to save few bucks on.

my MBP just started acting up.
it could not detect the speakers and there was a red light coming from the headphones jack.

i googled and found this.
https://josephhall.org/nqb2/index.php/stuckonmute

my question is, is there a need to send to the service center? would they be able to do anything about it? warranty ended in oct'11.

The 3.5mm jack is stuck in digital audio mode. You can tray inserting a 3.5mm headphone jack into the port and see the problem goes away.
You can also try cleaning the hole, but be very careful not to let anything stuck inside or broken. Some also suggest poking the end of the jack with a toothpick or straighten paper clip.

thanks for the reply.
i plugged the headphone jack in and slowly pulled it out. it worked fine after that.
i called the service center and they said its the logic board and it would have to be changed.
since its out of warranty and it costs rm3000++, i decided to let it be.
*
So your problem is solved or still the same?

for now it is solved.
but not sure if it will happen again since i always use the headphones.

Then you might want to be more gentle on the port. If you look around the net, many have issues with this combo audio port. But you can always revert to Bluetooth or USB audio just in case.

It could be mal-function battery. Send to service.
If you going to store a laptop for long period, it's good to ensure the battery always have charges. Meaning charge it time to time.

You will need another bootable OS X drive or Mac to quickly backup.
Don't try to fix the HDD. It might make it worst.

A) Take out your HDD and put inside a HDD casing then plug to another Mac and start copy your files.

B) Install OSX into FireWire or USB external drive. Boot into it. Backup your internal HDD.

Why no backup?
