As musicians we ought to have certain "skills" or "abilities" over our instruments, the music we listen or even sounds.

Voted For Ability to play any songs by ear. This is the the most important thing for all musos. Actually is more important than the notes/scales we play.

Can hear if instrument is out of tune/have defects. <=-- eh, damn pointless if musician don't have this skill leh, this means they can't even play their own instrument correctly.
i'd expect a musician to be able to at least detect when something goes off, eg the tuning of a string or whether an instrument has stray from the tempo. |

Ability to know the key of a song by ear. - But I need a reference somewhere like a musical instrument so that I know the name of the note I'm thinking of.
Ability to play any songs by ear. - Novice songs, yes. Intermediate, need time to listen to and analyze every section. Can hear if instrument is out of tune/have defects. - Dunno about defects though... if it's a fret buzz or something, sure. |

I wondered who here can make "tok tok" sound using their tongue. its like pressing the tongue against the inner gum and them release it.
My talent in regard to this is... I can "tok" all 7 notes, hence making "music" with it. Too bad I don't know how to whistle! QUOTE(debbieyss @ Apr 6 2009, 12:04 PM) Lol. Naah, I'm not that talented. I don't think I was born like this, because my hearing isn't that good. I often say "Huh?!" when talking to people. xD I think years of taking piano lessons help a lot (since standard 3 until form 3 I think.) Although I sucked at piano (and right now even worse), by the time I relearned music theory to play bass, everything kinda clicked and made sense. With music theory, it's easier to understand the harmony, and you can "predict" where the song is going, or even fill in a note or chord you can't clearly hear. Finding out the key of a song is generally quite easy though. You just listen for the one note that sounds "at home", and then check to see whether it's in major (bright/happy) or minor (dark/sad). Another way is to check the last chord (and the first chord). If a song ends with, let's say, C major, usually the song is in C major. Learning a song by ear to me simply means spending time and using different speakers/eq/slowing down, but you'll eventually get it. As for an instrument out of tune from itself/the rest of the band, it's like a singer going sumbang, which is painful! |

QUOTE(Fuuko Master @ Apr 6 2009, 12:57 PM) Lol. Naah, I'm not that talented. well, i personally self-taught on playing by ear as my church's worship team doesn't cling on the music sheet, they all play the songs after listening to it for few times and they got the accurate chords. I joined in as the keyboardist and to catch their speed in familiarise all the songs, I worked very hard to learn playing by ear, and I hope to be like them, playing any songs freely and "easily" as you like without worrying where to get the song books. It does bring much of conveniences, I can say.I don't think I was born like this, because my hearing isn't that good. I often say "Huh?!" when talking to people. xD I think years of taking piano lessons help a lot (since standard 3 until form 3 I think.) As for an instrument out of tune from itself/the rest of the band, it's like a singer going sumbang, which is painful! I spent around 2 years time for it. What i can say is, to learn music is somehow depends on how desperate you want to master it, though a little of musical sense is essential. |
