Hi All I'm new and nice to meet you all. I will be working in Japan and hope I could get some advice from you.

I'm applying a fellowship to do a postdoc research position in Japan sponsored by the Japanese government, and I have the choice of three places: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Monthly net income is 364,000 yen (no tax deduction) with a one-time payment of 200,000 yen as settling-in allowance. Insurance is covered, and there are 30 days of annual leave.

My questions are:
1. How much should I allocate for rent in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka? I'm 29yo single man, so a small low-end room will do. I'll will be working in Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka Uni, so please tell about rent in those areas.

2. How much should I allocate for food per month? I'm non Muslim. I could cook myself if that is the cheapest means.

3. Transportation fees per month?

4. Monthly net income of  364,000 yen, is it attractive? 

I have no knowledge about Japan. I don't know Japanese, but Japanese language is not a requirement in my research.

Can i join this topic? even though i am not in Japan but very keen to go for backpacking in Japan.. erm.. solo female backpacking in Japan, is it ok? i mean would it be convenient or safe? i guess it will be much more safer than solo backpacking in Malaysia.. right?

10k you say? thats almost eat up 5 month worth paycheck. is this joy trip for those above average person could go?
