REALISING that the county has limited pool of translators, Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah Malaysia (Usas) and Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM) signed an agreement to develop the fields of translation, publication and languafe training in Malaysia.

For a start, both Usas and ITBM will build a syllabus for a bachelors degree for Arab Language. The degree will also serve as a translation certificate recognised by ITBM.

Under the programme, students will undergo a General Translation Course module from English to Malay or Arabic, or go through 60 credit hours of theory, practical skills and final exam to obtain the certificate.

The three and a half year programme will be beneficial for students when they enter the job market and they can also freelance by being a ITBM certified part-time translator, Usas Vice Chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Nordin Kardi said, adding that through the partnership, ITBM will monitor and offer translation activities for the graduates of the programme.

“Besides programme preparation, this partnership will also focus on translation work and publications meant for internship programmes for Arab language students.

“In other words, this partnership will also continue ITBM’s efforts in improving the translation, training and publishing in the country,” he said to reporters before signing the agreement at the State Secretariat Building.

Nordin represented Usas at the signing while ITBM was represented by its CEO Mohd Khair Ngadiron.

The ceremony was witnessed by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir and ITBM Chairman Budiman Mohd Zohdi.

Zambry said translation work is often under-appreciated and many do not know that it is a job that pays well and is valued by many.

He went to say that he hopes that the students in the programme will learn from it and do something worthwhile once they have completed the course.

“You can work anywhere, freelance and so on. Lots of Arab works have not been translated and I hope the students graduating from this programme will do something about this.

“In the diplomatic and writing world, you need good translators. The country does have many translators who are well versed with many languages.

“Usas is a special university to Perak. We hope it can produce students with good skills, and we hope this programme can produce better students in the near future,” he said to reporters during the ceremony.
