Best university in Taiwan should be National Taiwan University.

I don't think HSK is accepted for admission to Taiwan university. Taiwan has TOP, a similar HSK-like test. Since HSK uses simplified characters I don't think it's acceptable to Taiwan.

SPM Mandarin is not equivalent to Taiwanese's high school Mandarin, but whether it is acceptable or not you'll have to contact the universities for further information. But I can confirm, to enter Taiwan university, you must be able to write in traditional character.

Our Mandarin standard is high, but not as high as Taiwan and China. They study literature, memorise poems, read history, write essays and give title to their own essays in their exam. Ours is, frankly, much easier if compared to theirs. Our SPM mandarin is probably equivalent to their 初中考. Not sure, but it's no where their 高考。

Yes, unfortunately, you need to write in traditional characters. If you prefer a Mandarin speaking country, then opt for China instead.

Is there a grading system for the HSK and TOP test?

For SPM mandarin students, what level will we be at for these tests?

How can a language as complicated as mandarin conquer the world?

Yes, there is a grading system and you can google them. I am not sure whether HSK and TOP are equivalent.

I have never seen the paper, but last I heard the paper isn't tough for Malaysian Chinese. The level is probably PMR level, maybe lower. Here's a sample and this is advanced level, the highest level for TOP. The paper looks easy for me. There are basically four levels of test: basic, easy, intermediate and advanced. I think you can ace the advanced test relatively easily. Malaysians won't find the paper hard. smile.gif

But again, do contact the university you intend to go to check whether SPM Mandarin is accepted for admission. If it's accepted, save the trouble! They might not need a Mandarin proficiency test too, they might accept you without TOP/SPM/UEC, so you might not even need to have a proficiency test, but it certainly is best to have one. smile.gif

Thanks!! I'll look through the paper.

Just to clarify, when you say easy for malaysian chinese, do you mean ..
(a) chinese who have been to private school and took UEC;
(b) chinese students in penang who have many hours of mandarin classes a week;
© chinese students in other states like Sabah where only 1 hour mandarin per week, from form 1 until form 5??

All Malaysian Chinese who have learned Chinese to at least SPM level, regardless of private school students or national school students.

By the way, I think you better contact the Taiwan university to check whether you need Mandarin proficiency test or not. I know China U need HSK, but I ain't sure about Taiwan. If they don't need it, don't waste your time. smile.gif

Hi,

Sometime is very hard to enroll 國立臺灣大學, 國立交通大學, 國立清華大學 & 國立成功大學 as most of the student will choose there four university as their first to fourth choices, unless you have very good results.

Hence, can choose 国立台湾科技大学 for fifth university if u are interesting to study in engineering field or design field in Taiwan as this university located in Taipei & it is top one technology university in Taiwan.

As I have moderate UEC results, and I choose 国立台湾科技大学 as my third choice, and I get it. (Maybe others applicant does not realize this university & I luckily get it)

Another things, it is better apply as a International Student rather than 侨生. As International student can apply to which university as you wish and then choose university you want t go at the end, but 侨生 can only get one university from 海外聯合招生委員會. Hence, using International Student to apply is better. Although it is a bit complicated when applying using International Student, but it is worth as you can apply also for Taiwan Scholarship which this scholarship is especially for International Student, not 侨生.
