Well the answer is Darwin's theory(natural selection). Unlike country in the west where war are fought in vast grassland or deserts, our war usually happen in dense monsoon jungle. In the west they have huge log blades and long spears as their main weapon because the use of chariots and Calvary. The keris mostly use in hand to hand battle which happen frequently here. The keris are not meant to cut or decapitate their enemy but to be used in soft tissue area such as the abdomen, arm pit, etc. The silat was an art to kill fast in warfare. Its simple efficient and fast. other martial art like the chinese kung fu, Capoeira are more exhibitionist in nature. Their moves are elaborate and over the top but not very practical in warfare. Modern martial arts are more street fighting than anything else because we have guns now. Exp the Brazilian jujitsu, very lethal in one on one situation but imagine if you to grapple someone one the battlefield.. You would be stab in an instant
