Thanks jialat for all your useful advice.
My question is: Which is better for eye health in the long run, contact lenses or spectacles?
I've been wearing contact lenses for the past 7 years and most of the time more comfortable than not. I very seldom wear specs out. But which is actually healthier since I spend most of my waking hours in front of the computer?

you r welcome. icon_rolleyes.gif

good question u got there, best visual aid is very much depend on age.

if u are a growing child or teenage, RGP definitely is the best choice for ur eye health. RGP control myopia progression and thus can prevent alot of high power related complication like retinal tear and phoria problem.

a 'multifocal' glasses would be the best option for those spending long hours on computer but not many ppl actually use it becoz its expensive and not many good practitioner know how to fit it. the reason i called it a 'multifocal' is because u need a max distance power to see far clear, while a lesser power for u to see computer screen clear, and all these different powers are made into a piece of spectacle lens.

pls bear in mind that the glasses u wearing is for far vision, in order to see near clearly, ur eyes need to work harder to compensate for the distance power and thus a higher accommodation is needed to see near objects and this will strain ur eyes. so ur eyes get tired after long hours with a distance power glasses / contact lens looking at near.

if u cant live without contact lens, and u dont need to see far very clearly, then u might want to consider a slightly lower power contact lens, but its not advisable becoz u will need time to get used to lower power lens as u have been wearing max distance power lens for 7 years. if u r close to 40, then a lower power lens will work great for u.

if u r young, then just stick to ur currect power lens and dont force urself looking clear at near while tired. must rest ur eyes more often. thanks

from my personal experience, Air optix is almost the same like purevision but air optix toric definitely not as good as purevision toric. thanks
rgp is comfortable if the parameters are correct and suit ur eyes. initially it is not comfortable but u will get used to it within 20minutes, then u will feel the lens anymore. if u can feel the lens continuously then very very likely ur lens features are not suitable for ur eyes. thanks

Hi Jialat,

I'm a daily CL user, both eyes power about 400. I used to use O2 Optix, but few months ago I switch to colour contacts. Since then I've been using Freshlook colourblends (wear about 8 hrs daily). My questions are:

1) Is wearing colour contacts in long term damaging to the eye? Many ppl say this, and I'm worried because I realise colour contacts is not as comfortable as normal CL (compare to o2 Optix lastime, o2 a lot more comfortable expecially if wear >8 hrs).

2) I'm about to start a new job which I will probably be wearing CL the whole day (e.g. 8am to 12am). Would you still recommend colour contacts? Or better to go back to o2 optix?

Yes, i like colour contacts! But my eyesight is more important =)

hi, wearing color lens for long term will not destroy ur eyes but its definitely not as comfortable as O2 due to its higher water content which absorbs more tears from ur eyes, thus less comfortable for dry eyes.

pls use extended wear if u plan to wear lens from 8am to 12am. extended wear lens are O2, air optix, purevision, acuvue oasys, night and day. i wont recommend color lens for such a long hours wear.

thanks

Do I need to wash my contact lenses daily even when I don't wear it?

Will color contact lenses make my eyesight worsen?

hi, u do not need to clean the lens everyday if u dont wear it. but must make sure the solution is enough to cover the whole lens and wash it thoroughly before u wear the lens again. its best to change the solution every week if u keep the lens for more than 1 week.

nope, color lens will not make ur vision worse. thanks

nope, its unlikely that is the main cause for the discomfort. under powered lens will only cause blur vision. thanks

in order to see clear with contact lens, the lens must be well moistured with ur tears. lens keep absorbing tears once it dried and worn on dry eyes for quite some time. so, u must use the lowest water content lens possible or use artificial tears/ eye drops. thanks
