Hi all,

I am considering to join Monash University (Malaysia) next year, however, i heard from many of my friends saying that the business course in Monash is really tough and it will be hard for me to graduate from Monash compared to other institutes.
So, i would really love to know more bout this statement.

not that, jus that this is my second and the last chance to study. I don't wish to take any risk.
I just wanna know whether the standard in Monash is far more higher than other institute like Taylor'sand Sunway.
I clearly know that when i ask this question, for sure there're lota ppl will say some kind like "nothing is easy" or what,
however, what i wanna express is that i dun wish to go through my old path again, to trouble myself in science course and get some sort of psychological problems.

ok then let me ask you this question.

what do you want to aim for in your degree?

just a mere pass, or first class degrees?

if its just a mere pass, i'd suggest you ignore those 3 unis, and go to somewhere cheaper.

if we are talking about first class honours, i am sure all 3 have their own high standards.

unless you are twinning with some top uni in taylors/sunway, monash's cert is slightly more reputable, but it doesn't mean you will stand at a higher advantage if you intend to apply for a job.

after comparing these factor, we can compare the type of students, and the type of networking you can get in these 3 uni, and the facilities of the 3 uni.

of course i wanna get a good degree and will try my best during the three-year-studies.
as what you have said, those three uni are pricey.
hence, i must know the standard of Monash so that i can pick a U that suits me the most and i wont waste any money of my parents.
yea, i know everyone would say, if i have tried my best and put my whole effort, for sure there is return.
but still, i still wanna stress that, i wanna know the standard so that i can know whether i can handle it.

okay. so what's your definition of high standard?

never ending assignments? all Ph.D holding lecturers?

and what do you think will suit you?

i am not sure about sunway and taylors, but since monash is Aus uni, it will have 1 long summer break, and 1 short winter break, total up to 4 months of hols, leaving 8 months of studies.

when people say its hard, from my point of view, it is because there isn't much time to do anything else and everything is cramped. imagine cramping all the syllabus into 8 months, whereas others(assuming they are not follow UK/Aus syallabus) are stretched over maybe 9-10 months.

sure 9-10 months one a bit more relaxing right? assignment due date also got extra 1-2 weeks.

but going back to your question, what kind of standards do you expect, and what is your type of uni?

Thanks for the reply.
Hmmm, okay, from my previous experience in my U, i had classes from 8am to 8pm with just one hour break between them and this insane timetable totally f***ed me up, all assignments due together, 3 mid term tests in one week and the final examinations squeezed together. the proportion for the finals occupied quite a lot in my course last time.
My stress management is really not that good. So i wanna know whether in Monash will i face that much of stress at one shot?
And i heard that in Monash, everything will be very independent, like, there will be no notes provided by the lecturers?
A staff from Sunway told me that Monash is more into research type right?
And i'd like to know how's the proportions of the coursework in Monash?

I do agree that your previous timetable was too much. But you must know that in university, it is inevitable to be under stress.

Depending on the lecturers, some assignments may be due together but there is time in between them to be able to complete them, as in any other university.

The rumour that no notes are provided is hugely untrue. I can't say the same for other institutions, but Monash has always provided notes to their students.

Since Monash is an Australian uni, their coursework is somewhere between the range of 30 - 50% depending on the units itself. Yes, Monash PHD students do a lot more research compared to other unis but it is not a uni that only does research. Somewhere in the period of your course you may be asked to do a bit of research but you will not be asked to write out a research paper on something entirely new if you are doing your undergraduate.

You are only wasting your parents money if you do not put effort into the course that you are doing. Otherwise, the money would generate a degree that is reputable. There is no such thing as hard to graduate if you really put your mind to it.

Good Luck on your decision.

Thank you for the info!
30%-50% as u mentioned is for assignment part or final?
So i think the marking for the assignments and finals would be very strict right?
Is there any tips given for the finals?

each course is unique la..having said that..every subject is also unique..

for example..one subject maybe 40% assignment, 30% finals, 20% mid term..or 70% finals, 30% lab?

u can actually check the exact details on the monash website. its a bit tricky to find la though.. biggrin.gif
