Honorary doctorates for Dr M, wife

2009/10/04

MALACCA: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, received honorary doctorates yesterday from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) for their contributions to development of the nation.

Dr Mahathir received the Honorary Doctorate of Development and Technology Management from university chancellor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob, the Malacca Yang Dipertua Negeri, at the convocation at the Durian Tunggal campus.

UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Yusoff Hassan said the award was in recognition of Dr Mahathir's dedication and hard work, for laying the road map for Vision 2020 and for the achievements of the nation during his 22 years of premiership.

"Dr Mahathir transformed the landscape of the country, and in the process helped in the setting up of high-technology industries such as Hicom, Proton and Telekom Malaysia.

"He had a great vision for the country, seen in the setting up of the Multimedia Super Corridor and Cyberjaya, besides his stress on introducing technical courses in local institutions of higher learning."

Dr Siti Hasmah's contributions were recognised with an Honorary Doctorate in Community Development for her role in the development of communities in Malaysia.

Dr Mahathir said the award was meaningful to him as he believed technological development was one of the country's most important agendas.

"I urge all those involved in the technological advancement of the country to redouble their efforts to transform the nation into a technology- driven country."

At the convocation, 1,591 graduates received their scrolls. Three people obtained their doctorates. Twenty-two graduates received their master's while 1,336 received the bachelor's degree. Another 230 obtained diplomas.

Azira Abdul Rahman and Amrik Singh Phuman Singh received the Royal Award, while Amin Mohamed Sultan and Vigneswaran Ramu received the Chancellor's Award.

update:
start from next semester:
1. 60%coursework-40% final exam mode will be change to 0-40%(max)coursework 60(min)-100%final exam. meaning that the learning will be more focusing on theory. this major switch makes the learning culture similar to APEX university USM, research univerisity UTM, UKM and UPM.
[ probably will be change to 60% final exam + 20% test(coursework) + 20% from assignment(coursework)/report(coursework)/etc.(coursework) which is equivalent to total 100% .meaning that total marks awarded for test and final exam will be up to 80% or more than 80% ]

reason: to secure the accreditation from EAC/BEM/IEM under Washington Accord and make sure UTeM's graduates are marketable http://www.washingtonaccord.org/Washington-Accord/

2.big change on industrial displacement (latihan industri-LI)
4months of industrial displacement will be held on semester holidays.no more LI during 6th semester.
this changes only applicable for 1st year student and the coming intakes.for 2nd,3rd and 4th year students, still sticks to the old policy.

*The above changes only applicable to UTeM's ENGINEERING COURSES.

utem's senate drops the bombshell:-utem decided to become as conventional univeristy
start from next semester:
1. utem will not using"Practice and Application Oriented-PAO" teaching and learning method anymore.60%coursework-40% final exam mode will be change to 0-40%(max)coursework 60(min)-100%final exam.meaning that the learning will be more focusing on theory. this major switch makes the learning culture pretty much similar to utm,um, usm etc.

Hi,

Master course in Manufacturing....
Do you mean Government subsidize RM10k off the full fees?
Where is the campus for Faculty of Engineering, UTEM? Is it in Ayer Keroh? I know there is a city campus near Hang Tuah...
Which to get more info...
*
if i am not mistaken the government is giving out scholarship to student who enrolled in postgraduate programme in any ipta.if you wish to know exactly how the government giving out this scholarship you can try to contact the relevant utem's authority.
http://www.utem.edu.my/
http://www.utem.edu.my/pps/

the faculty of menufacturing engineering(FKP) is in main campus, ayer keroh. only student from faculty of technology management and technopreneurship(FPTT) is studying at city campus. for postgraduate student of FPTT, i think they are in main campus since majority of FPTT academicians office are located at main campus.

Added on June 8, 2010, 8:49 pmok...here is the information regarding to the changes of coursework mark/exam mark and internship issue(only for engineering courses)

1. 60%coursework,40%exam will be change to 50%coursework,50%exam mode.

by breaking down the total 100% marks into 2:
a) coursework(50%):assignment/theoretical essay/quizzes=>20-30% , test=>20-30%
b) exam(50%)
*all lab sessions in every semester will be sorted out from the core engineering subjects and will be registered as a new subject which only carries 1 credit hour per semester.
so, basically the syllabus will be more focusing on the theory(since theoretical essay/ quizzes/test/final exam make up the total 100% marks, almost can say that UTeM undergraduates engineering degree are 80-90% based on theory). which is a contrary to the past where practical and hands on(a lot of technical reports) is more important.

2.internship will be held at 4th semester break and 6th semester break.during the 6th semester, student are necessary to take up subjects.which means that 1st-8th semester students need to study.

these changes will be implement for the coming intakes(ONLY FOR ENGINEERING COURSES)

QUOTE(corallinkz @ Jun 19 2010, 01:43 AM)
quick question :

Faculty of Electronics and Computer Engineering (FKEKK) in utem are fully accredited?

the course that im asking for specifically :
IJAZAH SARJANA MUDA KEJURUTERAAN ELEKTRONIK (KEJURUTERAAN KOMPUTER)

thanks
*
what kind of accreditation are you asking for?accreditation from MQA?EAC?

for
MQA: no worry at all
EAC: this council will pay visit to UTeM every one/two year to evaluate the engineering courses.they cant accredited courses without carrying out evaluation process.as long as the faculty and students maintaining the minimum quality, there will be no problem at all.for your batch, still there will be a evaluation process carrying out during your study years. so, you and your coursemates need to do the best to perform.no short cuts.then, your course will be accredited when you graduate. rclxms.gif
so far, what i know is all engineering faculties in UTeM are very concern about the accreditation issues. contrary, private sector(in job market)is less pay attention on this issue because what they concern is do their electronics engineers have any portfolio in IEEE.
