Getting subtitles to play
You should keep your movie and your subtitles both in the SAME folder, a lot of the times your media player will pick up the subtitles (otherwise you have to go to the subtitle options in your media player and select the subtitle files manually).

An alternate method to playing subtitles is DirectVobSub http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=589. Once you install this application all you have to do is make sure the filename of the movie and the name of the subtitle file are the same. For example Foreign.Movie.Xvid.avi should have its subtitles renamed to Foreign.Movie.Xvid.sub (depending on the extension of the subtitle file, you can also have .srt extensions).

If you have to download subtitles from a site, search as much as you can to find a subtitle file with identical filenames as your movie e.g. Hero.DivX.2003.RIP.avi + Hero.DivX.2003.RIP.sub = its showtime!


*note: if you can't find the subtitle file that exactly matches the movie file, it will save you some work to download a subtitle that uses the same frame rate as the movie. There will be less work involved with tools such as SubMax to get the subtitles in sync. Also be on the lookout for subtitles that at least match the type of release, e.g. you will probably be missing dialog if you downloaded a movie as director's cut and only have the subtitles for the theatrical release and vice versa. You will have to manually cut out a lot of dialog from the subtitle file and re-sync the remaining bits, using a subtitle editing tool such as SUBmax http://titanic.nyme.hu/~wyx/submax/
