Hi all. I'm new to laptop. I'm thinking of buying a laptop for the purpose of tertiary education in a couple of months time and would need recommendations.

Any Brands That I Prefer / Don't Really Like
Since I'm new I don't have particular liking or dislike. Dell looks appealing to me though.

Budget
Around RM2500 to RM3000

Screen Size
15" sounds nice. 14" sounds small but would probably suffice.

Weight
If possible equals to or less than 2.5kg. That'd probably mean 14" screen.

Tasks I'll Be Performing
-I'll be studying Civil Engineering so will probably use application and softwares related to Engineering. Autocad and so on.
-Assignments
-Internet browsing
-Music and Movies
-Photos (e.g. Photoshop)
-Light downloading only
-Most likely no gaming at all. At most is Sims.

Specs
I don't know. What is recommended for my case?
-Is processor speed of 2.0Ghz enough? or higher?
-Is RAM of 2GB enough?
-Hard drive at least 320GB.
-DVD + /-RW Combination Drive

Design (Looks & Stylishness)
Not my main deciding point. Average is enough. But I don't want a brick either.

Other Preferences
-Wireless
-Bluetooth
-Built-in card reader
-Doesn't heat up easily
-Generous amount of USB ports
-Considerably good speakers

Thanks smile.gif

Asus N50Vn (15.4", GeForce 9650M GT 1GB DDR2)
BenQ S57 (15.6", Radeon HD 4650 512MB DDR3) - best GPU with BD drive
BenQ S42 (14", GeForce 9600M GT 256MB GDDR3 + GMA X4500MHD) - long battery life, approx. 4.5hr
Asus F6 (13", Radeon HD 4570) - lightest of all

ASUS N50VN is kinda bunky to carry around.Big.From what you mention,i would suggest you go for BenQ S42.

hmm.... u guys think benQ is good??
not anti-benQ or wat.
i'm using a benQ 18' lcd for my desktop. and i certainly do think for its price n quality, its certainly worth buying than samsung lcd.

for laptops....
though their pricing is quite attractive.
but i really doubt their quality (FOR LAPTOPS)
their jus in the laptop business for like ermm.. .2-3years?
could you guys enlighten me on this?

tats why i mentioned quality built, warranty, and service.

BenQ has been in the market for pretty long... at least 5 yrs...

anyway, i am using BenQ's Joybook S41... quailty wise, it certainly is better than Acer... spec wise, it's the highest spec 14" at that time...

the palm rest is built with aluminium... even Asus also may not give u that...

build wise... besides the GPU problem (yeah, 8600M GS... shakehead.gif) never encounter any problems...

If you're not going to be doing much gaming, you'll probably be investing alot into mobility? You don't really need a powerful graphics card, even the most basic of GC's should be good enough. You could probably look into the Inspiron series, but they're more for the budget-concentrated consumers.

in that case, 5k is overkill imo...

some models u can consider:

Asus F6 series
BenQ S42
Dell Studio XPS 13
HP dv4/dv3

i prefer getting a dedicated GPU, as they can provide hardware acceleration in HD videos and some programs (eg Photoshop)

it's only one of the more expensive component in a laptop... there are many factors that contribute to the price

Added on May 7, 2009, 10:03 pmas for Macbook, well, it's pretty subjective... honestly i ve not used a Mac before, but as a person who looks for the best possible performance within a limited budget, Macbook is not on my list...

1. Brand -
Other than Mac,every brand will be ok. Prefer brand that support online purchase though.

2. Budget -
Around RM 2k ~ 3k. Or maybe 3.5k?!

3. Specs -
Eh.. Ideal for gaming and other normal task. Would prefer laptop with RAM of 2GB or more. Don't know about the importance of graphic card though. Should I be having one? Usually play games like DotA,Fifa online 2 and Facebook only. And other stuff like bluetooth, wireless etc etc.
*Sorry about what I'm saying,WEAK computer knowledge. Only know how to play games. rclxub.gif *

4. Size -
Don't like bulky lap top. Prefer lap top with screen size about 14" or Below.

Thanks in advance.

Added on May 8, 2009, 2:08 amAsk for my friend.

If he want a lap top just for U usage, which model is good?
Used for mainly online+school assignment+some movies.

Should be light I think.
