owh thx..
anyway is there a range for this?

e.g: 256mb ram = up to 1200x800..someting like that?
*
hmm.. there's not really a definete range...

few yrs ago, when we re at 1280x1024, even high end GPU also come with 256MB only...

so i would rather take a relative range, for today, there are roughly 3 markets, high-end (1GB), mid-end (512MB), low-end (256MB)

in terms of gaming, taking 1680x1050 and 512MB as the middle pt, any thing beyond that resolution and including it, 512MB-1GB. anything lower, 256MB-512MB

y low end card dun need so much RAM? mainly cuz they can't handle the high level of eye candy like AA, AF and stuff (all these stuff, the more u use, the more RAM needed as well), so y spend more money on RAM that u re not going to use?

some OEMs may use the RAM on a GPU as a selling pt... dun believe a bullshit abt that... if the GPU doesn't change, more RAM dun make much differences...

so i rather ve a more powerful GPU with less RAM, rather than a lousy GPU with more RAM...

so for 256mbs, we use 1280x1024 resolution max?
*
i would say up to 1680x1050....

anything beyond that, 256MB is definetely not enough... better get at least 512MB

QUOTE(Angel01 @ Apr 28 2009, 11:37 AM)
So how do we differentiate What resolution is the maximum for what Mbs?

Like 256-Max is 1680x1050
*
again as i ve said, there's not really a definete figure...

but since we seldom see laptops come with 1680x1050, i would say 256MB is sufficient for low end cards (9300M GS, G 105M, HD 4570, HD 3470, etc), and for mid end card, 512MB (9600M GT, 9650M GT, GT 120M, GT 130M, HD 3670, HD 4650, etc)

HD4570 is a class 2 and its considered low end?
*
by AMD's own market definition, yes, it's a low end GPU...

arhh ok, but 256mb of HD4570 is sufficient to play games like warcraft 3 and san andreas right?
*
more than enough...

i ve even tried san andreas on Intel GMA 900 before as well...

everything is the same just that its online.Multiplayer.
*
in that case, than GMA X4500MHD should be able to handle...

however, if u want to move betond that, a dedicated graphic card is still better...

wait..wait..

so the s42 with 9600GT 256mb is not good? shocking.gif
*
nope...

9600M GT is a mid end card after all...

even if it has only 256MB, it's still better than HD 4570 with 512MB...

anyway, for S42, 256MB is sufficient...

QUOTE(-kytz- @ Apr 28 2009, 07:19 PM)
256 MB is sufficient because S42's screen resolution is only WXGA(1280X800).However, 512MB is normally needed for higher resolutions such as Full HD since the GPU can fully utilize its 512MB

Am i right or wrong? hmm.gif
*
that brings us to another question.. what do u use the laptop for?

assuming u ve a monitor with resolution with 1680x1050, it's best that u ve at least 512MB of VRAM if u game. But if u dun play games, and only watch videos and stuff. 256MB, or even 128MB, is already sufficient.

When u play games, eye candy like AA, AF, motion blur, etc etc, these take up memory space as well, thus we need more VRAM fro games...

if u notice, office machines are usually equipped with integrated graphic, and these graphic card usually take up abt 32MB of RAM only...

QUOTE(Angel01 @ Apr 29 2009, 10:43 AM)
driver? mind elaborating more?
*
the driver is basically a piece of software that sits between the hardware and the OS...

when the OS wants the hardware to perform a task, it will tell the driver wat needs to be done, and the driver would then tell the hardware how to do it...

or the other way round, when we input sth, the driver would interprete the signals, and tell the OS wat has been input...

every piece of hardware has it's own driver to go with it (ie no driver, hardware dun work) keyboard, mouse, motherboard, graphic, hDD, DVD drive... all got it's own driver to make them work

ok, if u re talking abt integrated graphic, Intel will do it automatically, so u dun need to worry abt it... for ATi and Nvidia, u'll need to adjust the amount thru the BIOS of the motherboard...

if u re talking abt TurboCache and HyperMemory on dedicated cards, again the driver will do the job...

more RAM means smoother graphic, definetely, but more RAM shared also means less RAM avaliable for general usage... so u need to strike a balance between that if u re adjusting it manually...

QUOTE(ITrocks @ Apr 30 2009, 06:43 PM)
Why is 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 Graphics Card on the Studio 16 XPS rated higher than the HD HD4570 GC in the Studio 15? Isn't the 3670 in an earlier series? Will the 3670 be able to play games like Fallout 3, The Last Remnant, COD, Devil May Cry 4? Thanks!
*
HD 3670 - 120SP, 128-bit

HD 4570 - 80SP, 64-bit

that's the difference...

alright thanks...if i were to compare studio xps 16 and studio 15..in which aspect that studio xps beats studio 15?

and i heard from a lot of people it's not worth it to buy xps as what we pay additional is for its design only...is that true?
*
SXPS has better design, better GPU, the option to go BD and Full HD

if u re talking abt XPS (read: not SXPS), then the complain is the time-bomb GPU...

yes because is a mistake dell soldered the GPU into the motherboard which increase the heat. lucky my vostro1500 is not like that.
*
not juz Dell, most OEMs do solder method as it's much cheaper than using MXM ports...
