listen... no one is taking a gun and pointing it up to your head and subsequently forcing you to purchase an item which you do not want.

let's face it; there is no doubt that apple products are slightly towards the premium side. or else why are they being featured so much in hollywood movies, take that for an example.

the metaphor to this situation is pretty straightforward - beemers are relatively more expensive locally (compared to many countries; yes, now observe the similarity). right... just because i cannot afford a bmw 3 series (when it probably cost approximately the same as a honda civic abroad), am i gonna throw a hissy fit at bmwgroup malaysia/sime darby/the extortionate duties/sluggish AP system/the-deliberate-action-by-bank-negara-to-depreciate-the-ringgit-to-boost-up-the-trade-surplus for shattering my prospective hopes of owning a beemer? that's just down right childish and not to mention naive.

hence you are not happy about it, stop moaning and just move on. besides if your burning desire to own an iPhone is that strong, just go ahead and purchase one from the GC or if you wanna scoop yourself even lower, proceed with a locked unit and use the artificial unlocking method (either yellowsn0w or a sim card adapter). no one can EVER tell difference, apart from yourself.

this thread is dedicated to the first ever iPhone arriving at our shores (after the two agonising years wait) and not a maxis bashing thread. besides, has any of you realised that the fact of the skyrocketing price could also be motivated by Apple's own greed as well? (as seen in South Korea, where the COE of the major telecommunication there blatantly accused steve jobs of playing hardball?)

in conclusion, why don't we just concentrate in helping the rest of the forummers who are actually interested in getting an iPhone from maxis and also pointing out the miscellaneous terms and conditions imposed in the contract. LYN is after all a forum and not a place to shower your hatred towards something. period.

Finally, someone who's talking sense. There's no point in cursing Maxis and come up with speculative statements like 'the rate sux' since you cannot determine the acual rate as the packages offered also comes with a data plan. The packages are simply meant for people who likes to surf alot while being mobile. There's not much point in getting the iPhone without a data package included.

Nevertheless, I'd like to clarify some points:

1. Steve Jobs has always maintained that the iPhone be sold at US199* (starting price) no matter where in the world it is being sold. This means every telco must package their plans in such a way that it'll subsidise the iPhone enough to meet the standard pricing.

2. Apple has actually asked Maxis to lower their existing rates so that the package is more appealing to everyone. This is because the iPhone has low penetration rate in the asian market (Japanese actually hates the damn phone, China has countless fakes of it, etc). How did Maxis respond to this is unknown.

3. The iPhone offered by Maxis is unlocked (probably prompted by the upcoming anti-competitive act - Apple has asked that this been checked first before committing themselves). Malaysia currently does not have any laws that prevents the iPhone from being locked with a particular telco. This should put some light into why is the current offer has unlocked phones. A lot of countries has the act in place and thus sell legally unlocked iPhones sold in the market (as pointed out by some forumers here earlier).

4. There's no listing of Malaysia as an official country in Apple's website to receive the iPhone. Very speculative but it does show why the phone itself is being offered at such a high price. Which, of course, brings us to the question - who will cover the warranty?

5. No one can determine the product cycle of Apple, be it trend or past records. Therefore, speculative posts like 'there will be a new model this June - you will feel cheated' type of posts are totally irrelevant. New models will always come out. If you can wait, by all means go ahead. Those who look in this thread wants to BUY IT NOW!

6. Maxis WILL change the plans DEPENDING on next weekend's response. If most of you think it sucks, don't order it. And fill in the feedback form provided on Maxis' website.

In conclusion, don't buy it if you don't like it but stop posting senseless, single-liner, Maxis-bashing posts that don't help anyone.

p.s. I don't work for Maxis OR Apple.

why don't we ask LY.net owner to close the forum because we're cannot disagree on any topic in discussion?

what's the point of creating a forum if we're cannot discuss the pro and con of any topic right??
everyone might as well create a personal blog and disable the comment function, then you don't have to think about people disagree with your opinion.

Because EVERYONE already knows it's expensive. We also know that to compare pricing and packaging from country-to-country is very arbitrary.

Yes, Maxis is overcharging. Yes, Maxis is trying to make as much as possible before the new model/new package comes out.

So?

What we need is to help each other figure out a good plan to pick from the ones offered so that it meets our expectations. Tell us why you think the plans are not suitable or not fairly priced. I think work-together threads are nicer to read than your typical Kopitiam rollaround-kicking-mud-at-each-other topic. Don't you agree?

Besides, 1000 posts of 'its too expensive' gets old really fast.

150,000 units. That is the figure Apple REQUIRES you to take before they sign you up as a recognized telco. Does anyone see Maxis selling off all 150,000 units by June/July, with the current plans? Otherwise, they'd still be offering the "obsolete" iPhone3G when the rest of the world already moved on to the next iteration.

Did the 'agreement' say that 150,000 does not include the next model?
