Thanks for the feedback.

Any idea interms of the speed when transfering files wirelessly. Time capsule vs NAS (Synology / QNAP).

Can i use a 1-bay for back up & storage for both PC & Mac?
*
basically, wireless N will be a good idea. but g also can. Wireless N will have higher speed than G. the faster speed the lesser time u need for this funcion.

1 bay for backup and storage for both PC & MAC.... no problem as long as you must have enough storage space for your PC and MAC.

PC: u can use the synology DATA replicator 3 or if you are using windows 7 than u also can use it's build in backup software.

Hi den,

I'm new in this techy thing but would like to know if i like to buy Synology DS109j 1bay, does it support Website Hosting with PHP+MySQL?

thanks
*
Hi, bro,

DS109j had been replace by DS110j ( better CPU: 800Mhz, better RAM : 128MB), price still same :RM 599.00

it support Up to 30 Websites

. With the built-in support of PHP and MySQL, users can develop a dynamic database-driven website by themselves, or install a variety of open-sourced programs on their Synology Disk Station.

If you are an experienced PHP programmer, you can develop interactive programs on Web Station, such as shopping site, blog, or bulletin board or download from : Synology Third-party applications are selected and tested by Synology to help Synology users install a variety of applications on their Disk Station

Up to 30 Websites

With Virtual Host, you can now host multiple websites on a single Synology Disk Station. After enabling the Web Station, you can host up to 30 websites on Web
Station.

any promo for TS-459PRO?
btw, in terms of actual performance, how does it differ from 239 Pro II?
thinking of upgrading my 109 to a dual-bay system...
*
TS459PRO is usingIntel® Atom D510 1.66GHz Dual-Core processor and 1GB DDRII RAM, vs 239PRO II using Intel® Atom D410 1.66GHz Single-Core processor and 1GB DDRII RAM,

so there is have difference in term of speed.

BTW, may I know what is your actual usage?

actually, as i've mentioned, i wanna upgrade to dual bay...mmm 4-bay not sure lah...but mostly due to the storage needs for my collection...last time when i bought my qnap, only download the SD movie and now mostly in HD1080 and bdrip...even the anime is now in HD format, so the need for bigger storage arises. and then i also have the acryan POHD...playing the HD from my qnap...current setup is ok othen than the storage...but i'm also going to start with multiple HD streaming from my media player, notebooks and my desktop...so, wanna make sure my nas is up to the challenge...
so, again...any promo for any of the two?
*
239 pro , we had been stop to bring in, for 2 bays high performance series we bring in TS-259PRO.

actually, if you can consider:

Hi denhock,

What is the new product line launch for Synology NAS ?
*
every year synology will release new model. like this year 2010, they had release :

DS1010+ ( replace DS509+)
DS710+ ( new model and better than DS209+II)
DS410 ( replace DS409)

so, if you see DSx10 mean this model is year 2010 product.

next model which will be coming soon estimate by may or June this year:

DS410+ (replace DS409+ )
DS210+ (replace DS209+II)
DS110+ ( replace DS109+)
RS810+ ( replace RS409+)

anyway, for existing Synology NAS user, you can download the latest firmware DSM 2.3 and enjoy new feature ...all is FREE.... ( they will release min 2 major firmware upgrade per year)... which will max up our $$$

yes. new model base on Atom D510 processor like:

TS259PRO
TS459PRO
TS659PRO
TS859PRO
TS-459U-RP/ TS-459U-SP

user posted image

and this year they will (if follow the time table), TS12xx ( for 12 bays) and TS16xx ( for 16 bays) which can have up to 16 x 2TB ( about 30TB in single NAS)...

basically, QANP will release new model from time to time ( like NB) when they have new CPU model release by the CPU vendor ( like intel)

QUOTE(Namor @ Mar 26 2010, 04:39 PM)
Looking for a NAS but i'm not very sure of the difference between models

Could u explain the difference between
DS410j @ RM 1,599.00 ,RAID 0,1,5,6 (4 x 2TB)
DS410 @ RM 1,999.00 , 1.06GHz w # Floating Point,,64bit@DDR533 ,Memory: 512MB
DS410+ (TBA?)
*
basically the difference is the CPU and RAM

DS410j is using 800mhz, Memory Bus: 16bit@DDR800 and Memory: 128MB

DS410 is using freescale 1.06GHz with Floating Point, Memory Bus: 64bit@DDR533 and Memory: 512MB

DS410+ is using Intel Dual-core 1.67Ghz,with Floating Point, Memory Bus: 64bit@DDR800 and Memory: 1GB

in simple:
DS410+ is faster > DS410 faster > DS410j

and DS410+ and DS410 can link with DS510 to have total up to 9 x 2TB HDD , while DS410j max is 4 x 2TB HDD

user support: DS410+ is 2048 vs DS410 is 2048 vs DS410j is 1024
concurrent connections: DS410+ is 512, DS410 is 256 and DS410j is 128

so, for home use :DS410j will do ( or less than 25 person)
for small office use: DS410 is ok ( or for 25 to 50 person)
for DS410+ can support more than 100 person or for those need high speed like doing drawing/design/photo and others.

What is the best price u can offer (with 2TB HDD x 1 or 1.5 TB HDD x 1) ?

Thanks.
*
Synology can store any digital file. refer to your Q : ISO file, I assume this is video file than sharing of this file : let more than 1 unit media player to pay the same file, it support.

DS210j with 2TB , please check your PM.

Hi, I'm working In IT Department in Medium company that contains 4 departments which each department have 4-5 computer , In one department will have one PC hold all data and shared among department, Now I want to implement NAS in this office, can NAS do Virtually by department to access the file ? And Is it NAS easy to get infected by Virus from the PC if sharing file?
Please recommend which NAS suitable for my company. Thank You.
*
4 dept with 5 computer each, this mean u have about 20 user/PC

in Synology, you can :

A) create group like account , sales or others
B) set the access right for each folder

u can try this linkdemo site 1 , user: admin, pass: admin or demo site 2 , user: admin, pass: admin

when user put a file which contain virus, that particular file will still contain virus but will not affect / kill others file like what happen in windows system. ( u still need to install antivirus in your PC)

if all your user just doing MS word / documents than you can get:

1) DS210j (RM 999, without HDD) ( budget model ,suitable for less than 25 users), support up to 2 x 2TB HDD
or
2) DS410j (RM 1699, without HDD) (budget model) support up to 4 x 2TB HDD

if your team using CAD/design firm than you should consider:
1) DS710+ ( high performance , RM 2099 ) support up to 2 x 2TB HDD
or
2) DS410 ( RM 1,999.00) , support up to 4 x 2TB

My current problem is Download Station. Enabled eMule. Copied e2dk link. But somehow doesn't start download. Status remain 'Waiting'. Counter checked by running eMule on PC and works fine downloading the same file.

Anyone got any idea?

please check : your port forwarding

Thanks. I managed to sort it out. But now i have a new problem, something that i least expected and hope not to happen... power failure! and it happened. When power up, the blue lights keeps blinking for awhile..probably rebooting. Unfortunately now i can't connect to the NAS neither via Synology Assistant nor web. What should i do?
*
without the UPS is a very big issue if the electricity supply is not stable in you area,

normally, synology nas will take longer time than usual to boot up from power failure as it need to check the system/firmware and your HDD.

please wait for another 10 mins , if still cannot boot up, than you can remove the internal HDD and boot up the NAS without HDD. If you can find the NAS this mean NAS is ok (normally NAS don't have problem if power failure).

than u can try to put in back the HDD and try again, if still cannot, this mean your HDD having problem.

if you need to get the data from this original HDD, please PM me, we will teach you how.

this will depends on which function / technology ur prefer?

both brand have their own advantage ...

for for the past 4 years, synology had release new firmware ( min 2 times - march and Sept every year) and in fact, today they still release new firmware for year 2007 product like DS207 ( DSx07 series). this mean this will be more value for your $$$.

both Synology and QNAP support SMS system but you need to use like clickatell (http://www.clickatell.com/ ) [ the first and still the largest Online SMS Gateway
covering 819 networks in 221 countries and territories] or others like below image:

Bro hope you can help me decide ..
Synology ds210j or qnap ts210 ?

does the 128 and 256 ram make any big diffrence ?

i mainly wana use them for downloading preferb if able to download
from http servers ( non premium ) eg rapidshare, hotfile Megaupload etc.
and use a media server.

secondly just wana know as do both of them support something like
buffalo and seagate's web server. for easy access over the internet,
as i'm now having a dynamic IP it will keep changing, so i think it will
be easier to access it.
or mayb syno or qnap has a even better solution ?

thanks = )
*
Synology BT support rapidshare as well as megaupload.

synology & QNAP provide better web access than brand u mention above.
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=Post...3&qpid=33006735

u can use DDNS ( to use with your dynamic IP) and using the synology file station 3 or QNAP web file manager to access your file over internet.

if you have enable the "User Home" (synology only) than user can create a personal home folder for each user, except for guest. All users can access their own home folder via CIFS, AFP, FTP, or File Station.

To enable personal website

The personal website function is a convenient way to allow local users to create their own personal website. Each user will have a unique website address "server-IP/~username" or "server-name/~username", for example:

1. 192.168.1.1/~johnlee
2. SynologyNAS/~johnlee

if you want to try the online web experience:

for synology
site A:: http://midis.serveftp.net:5000 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:5000 ,use...password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:5000 ,use...password: admin

site B: http://midi2.myftp.org:5000 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:5000 ,user n...password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:5000 ,user n...password: admin

for qnap
site A:: http://midis.serveftp.net:8080 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:8080 ,use...password: admin://http://midis.serveftp.net:8080 ,use...password: admin

site B: http://midi2.myftp.org:8080 ,user name :admin, password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:8080 ,user n...password: admin://http://midi2.myftp.org:8080 ,user n...password: admin

both using streamyx 1MB package.

u should try the Synology file station 3:
user posted image

Synology File Station 3 is a simple web-based file management interface for users to locally and remotely access and manage files. Requiring only a web browser, you can access data anywhere with no extra installation needed.

File Station 3 can operate under a different network port to prevent users from accessing the management interface for security concerns. For extended security, in addition to HTTP, HTTPS is supported for secure access. It is also customizable to match corporate or organizational requirements.

File Station 3 has an intuitive user interface to minimize the learning curve for all levels of users. The AJAX technology used on File Station 3 allows for more sophisticated features such as drag-and-drop and right-click action. You can directly copy, move, compress, delete or rename files and directories stored in the shared folders of the Synology DiskStation. Moving files among different shared folders with File Station 3 is particularly efficient, as it does not require data to be routed through your desktop.

enjoy.....

(imaging you drag a folder ( let said 20GB - a folder size) from folder A to folder B, if you use samba ( in PC or MAC: open folder A and folder B) it may take more than hours (base on 10/100 line) , but if you are using File station 3, it take less than 5 mins.

Yes that is very true. But in contrast, if we purchase a smaller PC like 'shuttle' as a server, back up storage or media centre, i think it will work the same minus the inconvenience during power failure. Of course for non-IT person like me, there would be more settings which i'll need to do to the PC compare to the integrated softwares provided by Synology. And i guess another plus point is synology uses less power consumption compare to a shuttle pc.

Yes. I agree, like DS110j , Power Consumption: 19W(Access); 9W(HDD Hibernation), this mean your electricity bill will less than RM50 per year for this NAS running 24 hours x 365 days .

and this is linux os.... so u don't worry about your system file will kill by virus which is happen in Win os.
