Hasblow thought that with the movie release, they think that the toys will be a hit, wrong for them.
The movie wasn't the greatest, it was good, better than Transformers 2 movie (in my honest opinion, not being bias to the movie but enough about that), it's just that the movie didn't hype up the audience that much. The acting wasn't all that impressive, the dialogues were either cheesy or just uninspiring (it brings the nostalgia factor, sure, but it's not done right properly).
And Hasblow also made several mistakes:
1) Relying on the movie too much to do their job for them
2) Overconfidence by overproducing wave 1s and 2s (so now you got too much crappy figures all over the world. Walmart in the US has too much of the crap figures too)
3) Jacked up the price up to RM 39.90 (trying to be a slight more expensive compared to a Star Wars fig)
4) Not enough market research
5) Not enough advertising
6) After learning that wave 1s and 2s isn't doing well, they LIMIT their stock so they can do their MARKET RESEARCH test study on the consumers. A little too late, right?
Sure, they might have lose millions on backing up too much on the movie line.
But Hasblow don't have to worry too much since they have their Transformers and Star Wars to back up their loss. G.I. Joe fan base in Malaysia is very, very, very, very small and for Transformers and Star Wars fan base, they're much more bigger fans. And even for US and Canada, the G.I. Joe fan base isn't all that huge either to compare the size of Transformers and Star Wars fan base. So yes, of course Hasblow would focus on those 2 demographs, hell, i would too.
Anyways, here's a view of my display cabinet
