In crossfire or SLI the memory detected will be the lowest one. Something like RAID1. When you RAID1 a 80GB HDD with a 120GB one, you will get a RAID1 drive of 80GB, the rest of the space will be unusable.
So if you Crossfire a 512MB Card with a 1GB card, you will get only 512MB also the Core and Mem speeds will be turned to match the lower card. Hence why it is recommend to use the same generation and same type cards and hence why Crossfire between 3870 and 4870 wasnt worth it as well.
