any recommendation for hair mousse? My hair is very soft and gets flat easily even after a layered cut. Wax and gel doesn't work for me and once a hairdresser use some kind of foam which i think is mousse, my hair could stay up whole day which is something i find damn hard to achieve.

normal people usually dont have time to do what hairdressers do. your hair has volume when you leave the hairdressers because of 3 reasons.
1. layered cut - it makes your hair lighter and all, but it leaves pockets for your hair to be increased in volume with step 2 and 3. (this isnt the right way of explaining this i am sure hairdressers have more technical terms)
2. BLOWDRY - there was a time in my life where i was very freaking vain, and when i found this out, i blew dry my hair everyday. hairdressers learn techniques of blow drying to increase volume (blow against the style)
3. mousse and hairspray - mouse so that the product doesnt weigh down your hair, and hairspray to seal the deal and keep it like that.

cant believe i just foudn this thread now.. anyway im almost done with my suavecito strong hold. love the strong hold because my wavy hair tends to be a bit stuborn and goes out of shape fast with lighter hair products.

planning to try something new, and have noticed some of the cheaper local brands. any of them worth trying?

I blowdry my hair everytime i come out of a shower since I found out about it hahaha, my blow drying techniques though need to be improved. Mousse is the best product that has worked for me since forever and that makes me feel so accomplished xD, I rarely use hairspray unless one day I see my hair "eh damn nice I want this to hold" because im not that good at styling my own hair, if i try to style its like a lottery either good or bad tongue.gif

i feel you bro... we are just not as consistent cos we arent hairstylist.

but i realized shampoo before blow has a difference compared to no shampoo.

if you feel that your hair flattens too easily, you shouldnt thin your hair. layering makes it worse bro.

water based ones are not impossible to wash off.... if you want heavy hold... I think try gel type pomades... Like suavecito.... layrite also dries up if you dont mind your hair looking like a helmet....

I source my goods from singapore....Lockhart's goon grease is awesome... you can definitely feel the weight of the product. Lemon lime scent... heavy hold & very slick.... one jar can last quite long since you dont need to apply alot....try to apply in small scoops.. about 2 small licks will do for my hair.

Guys I have thick hair. I want it to last long when I style it for 5-6 hours.

My hair is something like this:

I want to create texture and make sure it stays up when I pull back my hair.

It's kinda annoying sometimes when strands of my hair will fall on my forehead.
*
what do you currently use to style your hair? what are your steps?

Use oil based heavy hold pomade.  Restylable anytime and good hold.

Step in the gym and step out from gym. Hair still good bro.

But hard to wash off in 1 wash

agreed

I think you need clay. To get that textured look as you mentioned disheveled hairstyle.

you can try Baxter of California Clay Pomade. but its a bit on the pricey side.
*
clay or a good wax would do. dont need to spend on pomade. HAHA

that is up to personal preference. I used to use wax but now once I use pomade. I never went back LOL.
*
slickers will always be slickers... haha... but in general i feel buying wax (if it is suitable for the style of hair you have), if possible, should always choose the cheaper option. because it is something you will use everyday.
