What is your hairstyle in this 2 pictures called? Is it a pompadour? Can't see clearly.

And what product are u using to achieve it?

More of a side part I guess. Juz tell the barber u want undercut on the sides. And keep it long from the top. The way I comb it is just style it to the 1 side.
*
Looks pretty good. So its short on the sides and long on the top, like an undercut/fade? Though I'm not sure the difference between undercut and fade

What product are u using in those 2 pics? Looks like a bit of wet look. Pomade?

yup. I think mine is undercut. Undercut is more drastic, like short, then long. Fade is like, it slowly fades into longer hair. If i'm not mistaken.

Using this Hanz De Fuko Gravity Paste. Got a bit of shine to it. Then finish off with Osis+ hairspray.
*
Is the hairspray necessary? Does the paste not provide enough hold?

Why paste anyway? Why not pomade or wax?

stay away from Gatsby or any pharmacies hair products because it contains high concentration of alcohol which lead to hairloss. You definitely need to spend more for your health of your scalp.

So Gatsby waxes and pomades are not good?

I'm using Suavecito Firme Hold pomade, this one. A popular product. Look at the number of reviews.

But I find it normal. The smell isn't great (smells like Brylcreem haircream), and feels very similar to Gatsby Moving Rubber Wax. If I forgotten that I applied Suavecito Pomade on my hair, I would have thought the product in my hair is just some normal Gatsby wax.

After bathing and drying my hair using a towel (or sometimes hair dryer, but not often because heat damages hair), I apply this Suavecito pomade, so it does not have much shine because I apply on dry hair. That's why it looks like as though it's just wax in my hair.

Any other better hair products in the market you guys can recommend? Wax/clay/pomade/anything. Currently I have a fade haircut. Side and back very short, the top is about normal length, quite short, I waiting the top to grow even longer. I like pompadours.

im quite ok on pomade so i need to ask u 1st. for a pomade u looking for easy to wash or u dont mind about it? if u dont mind i  suggest u go for petro-based pomade. u will got the shine u wanted and those greaser look but the drawback is, its really kindda hard to wash out. there are some tricks u can use to wash all the grease from ur hair but i wont touch on that 1st.

so there are also what they called water-based pomade (suavecito is a WB pomade [well more like gel lol!]) so if u like the WB products, i could recommend u a US pomade, shiner gold (heavy hold) layrite (US pomade). As for local i really like skull republic. all the WB pomade i list here can be restyled with the help of a bit of water.

there are new ones called Unorthodox water-based (UWB) which they say holds like a petro based but washes like water=based. so u get best of both world, well thats the theory lol. i dont have any experience with UWB so i cant give my opinon regarding this.

im personally love petrobased pomade thou i do occasionally i use WB since its convenience for me. heck i even bought tancho just for the sake of the old high school memories lol!

I think I will stick with water based pomade. I prefer hair products that are easier to wash out.

By the way, a question for you: regardless of the hair product you use, after a day of using it, do you wash ur hair with shampoo? For example, today is Wed, and in the morning you apply Suavecito Pomade for example, then when u come back at night, do you wash your hair with water and shampoo, or just water?

for water-based pomade, nope... i just wash with water. i usually shampoo my hair every 2 or 3 days. since some of the waterbased pomade i use are protecting my hair (loads of argan oil, castor oil, mango butter all the good stuff).
*
So whether it's pomade, gel, wax, clay, paste, you still shampoo your hair every 2-3 days only? Not everyday la?

And what waterbased pomade u use that protects ur hair and has all the good stuff?

only when its easy to wash like water based pomade. i only use either pomade or hair cream these days, i have not touch gel,wax clay or paste for the past 5 years.

however if its a petrobased pomade, i usually just wash my hair normally for couple of days since i can get it to build up and styling the hair gets much2 easier and u can get a really great result. after that its degrease time.

and to answer ur question regarding the shampoo thing, yes i shampoo every 2 - 3 days. i dont see the need to shampoo it everyday thou.
*
Eh so what product are u using that has all the good ingredients you mentioned above?

I've been reading up more about pomades. So I learned that water-based pomades can be divided into orthodox and unorthodox. Orthodox ones are like Layrite and Suavecito, while unorthodox are like Odouds. And seems like unorthodox is better because it does not harden up and has more natural ingredients. What do u guys think?

Odouds looks nice but is expensive and I can only find it online. Do any retail shops/hairdresser in Klang Valley sell them?

Currently im using tancho, good ol tancho. On my arsenal i got goon grease, grandads heavy hold, gonzo heavy hold and gonzo slick, schmiere heavy hold special edition
All of them are oil based and got 1 or two ingredients i mention.
Wax hold much better than oil thats for sure but its also hard to wash. Most pomade use beewax or some sort of natural wax to make it hold better and depending on the strength of the wax it can either be shiny or matte. Pomade are made to be greasy but there are also some that less greasy and more waxy. As for smell also depends on the brewer. I mean there are loads of choices for smell ranged from fruity to perfumey, to wood and ash and i kid u not gunpowder. So feel free to choose which of the smellu like the most
*
Oil based pomade hard to wash off but it's better than water-based pomade right? The only advantage water-based pomade has over oil-based is that's it's easier to wash off. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Not really. Some UWB pomade are almost as good as OB pomade. As for me i love OB pomade is because personal references. For me i love the grease on my hair n i love the optionto restyle it. But generally yeah u are right thou its not the case nowdays. Pick ur poison either OB or UWB or WB its at the end, ur choice.
*
Why you call it grease by the way?

And do u know about orthodox and unorthodox water based pomades?

here's a bit about it;

( a paragraph from:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greaser_(subculture) )

so thats why it is called grease.

well i do know a bit about WB and UWB. WB is just sort of gel. some of people who i know do not call it pomade but called it gel and its kinda true to be honest. now an unorthodox WB is when they put some aqua or type of water to the concoction's of oil based pomade ingredients (or different thing all together thou I'm not certain of the later). if u watch youtube how to make an unorthodox WB pomade u'll see what I'm talking about here.

all WB and UWB have a lifespan of 1 1/2 years to 2 years since its mixed with sort of aqua or type of water. to make the shelf life longer they put some sort of preservatives (which most are chemicals) into the UWB and WB pomade to make it last a bit longer.

hope it helps a bit

Do you think using a pomade like Layrite Superhold Pomade or using a clay like Hanz de Fuko Claymation is better for creating this kind of hairstyle?

i would said claymation for sure.

Why'd you think so? By the way the guy in the picture is Blumaan, a popular Youtuber of hairstyles. I like his hairstyles. His hairstyles are what I'm aiming for. They're damn nice.

QUOTE(g3n0c|d3 @ Aug 29 2017, 09:06 AM)
if u want a more matte look u should go for clay/wax. the hairstyle also for me should go for something towards holding your hair better and clay and wax is ur best bet.

layrite superhold is kindda shiny thou not as much, and the hold can be hard. for that kind of look u need something that can be restyle over and over again.
*
Actually to be honest, I am still uncertain what is matte hair. It's supposed to mean hair that look natural like as though there is no product in it, and has no shine right?

But when I google for images of matte hair, the images of hair I see look pretty shiny too and I can tell there's products applied to the hair lol

I just use 3 items before styling my hair. Wide tooth comb, hairdryer and my fingers.

[attachmentid=9129899]

This is it, it's quite cheap, and i find it useful for me. It gives a good overall shape. And while blow drying my hair, just keep combing it towards the way i want my hair to style. Then alternatively switch between using fingers are natural comb.
*
Why wide tooth comb?

Btw what brand blowdryer do u use and is it ionic?
