does anyone know how to get the sound of the guitar solo
of Dream Theater's song - Hollow Years(Live @ Budokan version)..
should i use echo?delay?reverb?or combination of them..

u need a mesa rectifier. that's the main point.

maybe an amp modelling could be good for you.

john petrucci doesnt use a rectifier!!!!

he uses mesa Mark IV heads into a Mesa Formula preamp, to mesa High Gain Amp switcher. also uses a dbx 166a compresser and TC electronics m3000 Reverb, 2290 Delay, eventide dsp7000 harmonizer, dunlop crybaby (rackmount version). pedals include boss TR-2, DS-1, MXR EVH flanger and phase 90.

guitars uses Dimarzio D sonic and a custom Dimarzio (neck), fishman piezo.

i've played petrucci's signature guitar before, and i have to say the pickups arent that hot. also they dont have really rich harmonics therefore with high gain, when you play a note you get mostly the fundamental frequency of the note (which is good when you play a burst of fast notes, making everything abit clearer). i think thats one of the keys to his tone.

so for the tone, run your amp modeller on Mark IV, have abit of reverb and delay (petrucci uses delay alot in his leads, its just not that apparent when playing in a band, as it sits nicely slightly behind the mix, but plays a big role in the overall sound). slightly compress.

in the video he starts off using the neck pickup, tone controls backed off abit, and with the mesa's middle gain setting. at about 50secs he changed to his regular high gain lead settings, and uses his crybaby. alot more delay at this point too. im also guessing he backs off his volume knob abit (judging from tone of the output of his pickups) and probably raised it at the 1:40 part. at the 1:40 part he uses his wah too, but not the typical wah wah sound, but he keeps it at the 'sweet spot' and uses it as a frequency boost/filter.

hope it helps. end of the day, just try sitting in front of the computer with your pedals in front of you and tweak it comparing to what you hear. of course you cant get it 100% right but you can come close.
also remember, what you're hearing is also the post amp processing, which is the SM57 mics (and mic placing/angle), into yummy mic preamps and of course after the mix (house mix, and probably they multi tracked it on protools live to be brought for further mixing of the DVD) and mastering of the DVD.
