'Percy Jackson' finds lead actors
Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson join film

user posted imageuser posted image

Logan Lerman and Brandon T. Jackson have landed the leading roles in Fox 2000's "Percy Jackson."

Chris Columbus will helm the adventure/fantasy about the titular schoolboy (Lerman) whose world is turned upside-down when he discovers that his father is actually the Greek god Poseidon. Story kicks off with Percy becoming the prime suspect when Zeus' master lightning bolt is stolen. The boy has just 10 days to find and return the stolen property to bring peace to the warring gods.

Jackson will play Percy's best friend Grover, a satyr. Fox 2000 is looking to place a number of big-name thesps in the smaller roles of the gods. Lensing is skedded to begin in April in Europe.

Craig Titley and Columbus adapted from "The Lighting Thief," the first of five novels in Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series.

Karen Rosenfelt, Michael Barnathan and Columbus are producing.

Lerman, best known for his supporting role in "3:10 to Yuma," played one of Mel Gibson's sons in "The Patriot." He most recently starred with Renee Zellweger in "My One and Only."

Jackson's credits include "Tropic Thunder," "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and the upcoming "Tooth Fairy." He was named one of Variety's "10 Comics to Watch" in 2008.

Added on July 22, 2009, 11:00 amPercy Jackson & The Olympians is a series of adventure and fantasy books by Rick Riordan. Set in the contemporary United States, the series is based prominently on Greek mythology. The series consists of five books, as well as spin-off titles called the The Demigod Files and Demigods and Monsters.

The protagonist is a 12 year-old boy named Percy Jackson who discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, god of the sea. He learns that the legendary beings of Greek mythology still exist, including Cyclopes, Empousai, Titans, and of course the Olympians (Greek gods) themselves who are in Olympus on the mythical 600th floor of the Empire State Building. Monsters frequently attack him because he is a child of one of the "Big Three" (the sons of Kronos: Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades). Percy meets many other young demigods, both friendly and hostile, who are also in the process of discovering their heritage and powers.

The series stayed on the New York Times Best Seller list for children's books for 100 weeks as of June 13, 2009.

this is more like a children novel book made into movie... Clash of the Titans got more crunch wif all the mythology creatures in it...

put it this way... Percy for children and family while Clash is for adults... laugh.gif

Hahaha... Clash of the Titans might not be right for children. This is more of a "Harry Potter" genre... it appeals to kids more.

I'm liking it even more after watching the trailer.

Both Percy and Clash of Titans is worth anticipating smile.gif I'll be going for both if possible (although COT does look more appealing).

I read the book. Percy Jackson's one I mean. Indeed awesome. Worth anticipating alright. I just hope, they don't cut too much scenes out. Hehe. blush.gif

But then, does Logan Lerman have green eyes? That's how they describe Percy though. Haha. XD

First off, I have NEVER read the book

First impression, a modern retelling of the legend of Perseus.

Scene stealers, definitely Brandon T. Jackson and Pierce Brosnan.

Surprises, Uma Thurman taking up the role in this movie (a rather small one) in this movie, and she does it deliciously... I suppose even Uma Thurman has monthly bills to pay.

Strong first act, weaker 2nd and 3rd did not live up to expectation.

Worth a viewing if you have the spare change.

I can't say that I actually enjoyed this movie. Although there were a lot of funny scenes and dialog but the acting is just not good kinda kills it.

Probably because those are new and young actor, I assume?

Everything work way way too linear and not to mention that some of the scene kinda rush IMO. (mind you, I never read the novel)

Most of the fighting scene are not that good and not well-choreograph IMO. Especially Medusa, she got kick out of the bucket too easily. Even Minatour fight was slightly better than that. The series would be a lot better if there are more "magic" attack involved. Percy should use his water spell more often as well.

As for the Casino scene, I am don't like it although I know the purpose of that scene for. I guess it was a the work of "final villain" to delay and waste the heroes time? It is never explained in the end...or is it?

As for the ending, It was alright. Everything wrapped and complete but somehow lacking for me although the credit ending definitely do the justice.

Overall, It is 6/10 for me. Probably because I have extremely high expectation on it.

I rate 8/10. It builds up the climax only the thing at the end ;| They should make epic ending. But it sounds like it just started but from what I discover, they have many sequels cause this one only involves one chapter out of 5 chapter's story of the Percy Jackson portraited.
Just watched. I like the battles with Hydra/Medusa(kinda fast though)/Sons Of Hermes/Casino temptation(was expecting a god enemy back there/Hades(got pwned by Zeus's Lighting Arrow) hmmph!
@ask  is there anything after credit roll? Sequel or smth funny? :] set spoiler tag =x wan c

Haven't read the books so I can't tell if the plot drifts... but the beginning of the movie (not to mention, some of the casts) leaves you with pretty high expectations. Great start, good performances for some of the cast, superb effects and animation but the movie died with a terrible ending.

Man am I disappointed. tongue.gif

From an average guy who only enjoy movies and have never read the book :

Film is below average. Not suspense enough. Too linear ... as in boy finds out himself as a demi-god and manage to master his powers before hte movie mid point. I guess them demi-gods must be extremely talented. Interesting concept though of how they mix in Greek mythology with the modern world.

i) Medusa was sooooo predictable. Aunty Em. Rock statues. Who else can it be lol? tongue.gif
ii) Didn't manage to guess Hydra.
iii) I do think the Lotus Lair part is kinda out of the story until I read emino's post.

On a side note, Percy Jackson was my worst movie experience, namely because of a lady that kept on going "huhu" during the entire show. vmad.gif

[skip all the previous review and post this, might contain SPOILER]

(I didn't read the book, and only watch this because at that time no other movie to watch)

To me, this movie is really a sucks one and the story shouldn't "exist" at all.
How is it possible that "The son of the God of Messenger" can stole the Zeus's lightning bolt? And why Medusa and Hydra are alive where they been killed by Perseus and Hercules?

(If skip through the mythology) The movie started with a few fight/runaway scene, which probably made the audience impress (at first). The subsequent fight scene became not as good as the previous one (try compare the Hydra fight with Luke). This have made the movie became lost interest on later part...
It made me feel like this is just a typical Hollywood product, just that there is no sex scene.

I dont actually remember how. I guess he used the Helm of Darkness to be invisible and stole it under instuctions from Kronos. Also, being the son of Hermas, God of Messages, Travelers and Thieves he could have some other Hermes's godling powers.

But what I do know is that when Zeus realized the bolt is missing, he sent out all the gods to look for it, Ares finds Luke, and Luke persuade him by saying that the missing bolt would caused wars between the gods, and Ares wants war badly. He took the bolt for 'safekeeping'.

they talked about his age in the movie ? cant recall if his age was mentioned in the movie but for sure we can see he's a highschooler. he is 18 years old (born 1992) in reality, if that was what you meant.
never read the book before but i thought Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was just o.k., meh.

This is NOT the first time I seen movies where prize cars were hijacked from inside a casino (usually Vegas) that comes with the key easily accessible and some petrol to get it running.

as some of u mentioned, great opening, acceptable mid part, but disastrous ending... shakehead.gif

i'm disappointed as this comes from the director of Home Alone, Harry Potter 1&2 doh.gif

the story is quite stupid if u ask me, or maybe it's the screenwriter who failed to bring out the best from the novel. Acting sucks as well... as far as i remember, there are quite a number of young actor actress who can act superbly at a young age, so this movie's casts should really go back to acting academy shakehead.gif

they talked about his age in the movie ? cant recall if his age was mentioned in the movie but for sure we can see he's a highschooler. he is 18 years old (born 1992) in reality, if that was what you meant.
They sure don't look 12 to me.

Percy was twelve. And the Great Prophecy was supposed to happened when one of the Big Three godlings reached 16 years old.

The Great Prophecy (that was weirdly never mentioned in the movie, which is one of the main reason why Poseidon hides the existance of Percy).

Pros: Uma Thurman. Animation is top notch.

Cons: A mediocre film that tries too hard to be epic and fails miserably.

Suitable Audience: KIDS.

the casino scene was totally pointless and draggy.

It reminded me of those 90s Kevin Sorbo Hercules telemovies. Nothing impressed me in this movie. It was humdrum.

i felt that this sequel is kinda "toned down" from the previous one... a LOT

back then we have pierce brosnan, uma thurman, steve coogan, sean bean, rosario dawson to name a few as
the supporting cast now only stanley tucci & nathan fillon(even their time on screen was short)

and the 1st one did have some trademark places like lotus casino, parthenon, the underworld and mt olympus itself.
The sequel only have the ocean and that's that

The director is like, let's get this shit done ASAP with so I can carry on living with my life. I bet the actors thought of the same.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)

Another book series that movie producers are hoping would turn into the next Harry Potter franchise...

With the above mention franchise, with each passing movie, the director approach the movies from a more adult perspective.

Unfortunately for this "movie franchise" the reverse is true, and in turn, hurting the movie...

I do understand that there is a big market for a children/family oriented movie. Having said that, there is no reason why movies in this segment needs to... lack sophistication...

Frankly, I have never read the series, so I do not know if the issue lies with the source material or somethings are lost in the translation... (I really would like to hear from the readers of the books)

I know a thing or two about the Greek Mythology, and the series, really do... dumb down Greek Myth, which is actually quite sophisticated (even the late great Shakespeare, had been know to pinch an idea or two from Greek Myth)

Basing everything in the States is a big problem for me, I really wonder why so many Greek Myth stuff ended up in the States??

And everything has to be... "Americanised" (Circeland... doh.gif "It's A Small World After All?" blink.gif)

And something that really irk me, is the whole look of the movie. There are alot of "night" shots, and I absolutely no photography knowledge, but there are some shots here that looks really really... WASHED!! (The same can be said about the The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013))

To my untrained eye, I really feel the work produced by the director photography (Shelly Johnson) is underwhelming. Funny thing is he also did Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and The Wolfman (2010) which I have no issue with. Maybe it is the new digital cameras they use nowadays...

I will not go as far as to say it is as bad as The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, it is just very predictable and un-challenging.

As always...
