Can I suggest eating natural sources of glucosamine and chitosan? Since they are for joint and bone regeneration, can you eat bones (chicken bones, pork bones, etc) , prawn shells, crab shells, instead? It may seem tough, but our teeth are strong enough to crack chicken bones. Maybe today's chickens are weak as well. Eating the natural way is not something to pooh-pooh. Prehistorically, man has eaten bones before. I have chewed drumstick bones and eaten the marrow, which is I think a good source of joint fluid.

Eating bones and shells can be dangerous though and it is possible to have a small cut in your throat. I remembered getting cut once by a small pieces of chicken bone and it was irritating as hell waiting for it to hell. Not to mention that eating something as tough as bones can be pretty hard on your teeth. So taking glucosamine in tablet form may be better in the long run.

~Sigh~

Here we go.

The PROOF you wanted was provided by wiki itself. Had you taken the time to actually read the references that wiki provided, you would realise that in fact the only large multi-centred RCT that really came up with glucosamine did not provide any benefit over placebo is the one done by Clegg et al,USA 2006. Its sports 1583 patients and shown that glucosamine or chondroitin alone does not show significant inprovement over placebo. However, when combined, the results are quite encouraging. And you ask for details for people who have benefitted. Go see the results. Glucosamine provided is 3.9% superior to placebo in the primary endpoint, while 11.4% superiority over placebo in the secondary endpoint. More patients have been benefited from glucosamine, however health care professionals consider them as insignificant beacuse p value is larger than 0.05. This is because the benefit maybe due to chance. Should the trial be scaled 10times to include more than 10000 patients and if the percentage of benefit remains, then the values may become significant.

Other studies range from 80+ patients to 200+ patients came up with glucosamine not significantly superior to placebo. On other hand many meta-analysis have proven glucosamine superior. But meta-analysis being meta analyses, the results are less reliable, but in depth reviews are required to appraise their worth.

As with my first post I've already gone through the 4 references provided by wiki in as layman as I can and you still ask for proof and details. As for proof, you have found them, the details, you have to go read it for yourself. I'm not going to go through with you how to appraise journals, and what are the strenghts and weaknesses of each paper.

Healthcare professionals have gone through much training in analysing these papers so much so that many have to repeat this module because english is not their native language, and statistics is not everyone's forte.

So if you've decided to sit down and read those papers, be sure you understand what is p value, odds ratio, hazards ratio, numbers to treat, confidence interval, WOMAC index and read up how to appraise journals before you start shouting for PROOF and DETAILS. Btw, read the other links that nimloth32 provided as well before making conclusions.

Please do not jump around and state claims with weak basis, and when educated otherwise, fail to see the points others made, scream for the obvious answer that you already have, and thus making a fool out of yourself.

That is all from me. Until you make an educated rebuttal with your own proof, evidence and analysis, I urge all healthcare professionals in this forum to ignore the TS as this is really a waste of time.

edit: typo

edit 2: Btw your anecdote on the Newton's Laws of Force and Einstien's Theory of Relativity is most inadequate. May I ask why Newton's Laws are still taught in schools? Because at non relativistic proportions, it is still very applicable. Not everyone can understand Einstien's Theory of Relativity, hence the still applicable and easier to manage Newton's Laws are still taught. Hence that may be the reason why your pharmacist asked you to try glucosamine for OA without showing you piles of research papers, because the average public doesn't need to know all the statistical jargon, and whether a paper is reliable or not.

Hey Kain Sicilian, your post in here deserves 2 thumbs up! thumbup.gif You've explained well about trials & studies (and how it is bias), explained well that taking a reference from wiki is just like taking your friend's reference because anyone could post on wiki, and explained well about the supplement as well. Great stuff from you.

Conclusion is.. it is a supplement, it's not a treatment. It's not 100%, but it sure does help in the long run. It doesnt CURE totally, it prevents.

Sorry for chiming in a bit late to the discussion, but I really feel like I need to add my 2 cents. I finally found something that works for my grandmother's Arthritis!

What a relief to finally have gotten rid of the horrible pain, without any expensive procuts at that.

Registered an account only to say this:

There are many different ways of treating severe arthritis. The way used to treat arthritis may depend on the symptoms and type of arthritis affecting the person.

**i) Medication** - Most people who experience severe arthritis will normally see a medical doctor to get medication to ease and reduce their arthritis pain. Doctors will normally prescribe NSAIDs( Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to reduce inflammation and swelling. These NSAIDs may be beneficial in treating the symptoms and providing short term relief to those suffering from severe arthritis. Some commonly used NSAIDs include aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. You also need to be aware that these NSAIDs may cause side effects like stroke, heart attack, stomach ulcers and kidney damage. In view of this, these drugs can be used for short term pain relief.

**ii) Physiotherapy** - Together with medication, physiotherapy plays an important role in managing arthritis pain. It can help you maintain independence through improved strength, mobility and flexibility. Physiotherapists will examine your muscles, posture and the way you walk and this includes activities that causes you pain. They will design a personalised treatment plan which may include hydrotherapy, massage and pain relief techniques. TENS (Stimulates Transdermal Nerves) is a method of pain relief in physiotherapy. Currently it is combined with acupuncture: Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) at Acupuncture

**iii) Surgery** - For those people having advance arthritis, medication will no longer be an option. They will have to go for surgery to have arthritis pain relief. The operations may include
a) replacing a badly damaged joint
b) releasing trapped nerves
c) removing the inflamed lining of the joint cavity
d) removing bone to relieve pain
e) repairing damaged tendons
In most cases surgeries have been successful in restoring the knee-joints and reducing the pain substantially. The disadvantage of surgery is that it is costly and there are cases where surgery fail to restore the knee joint.
**iv) Exercise **- For osteoarthritis, exercise may be the preferred option. Exercise can help relieve stiffness, reduce pain and swelling and also improve muscle and bone strength. The exercise programs may include
a) low-impact aerobic activity
b) range of motion exercise for flexibility
c) strength training for muscle tone

**v) Weight management** - Losing weight is another way that can greatly reduce knee-joint pain. When a person has excess weight, this extra weight will normally add additional pressure on the knee-joint which aggravates the arthritis pain. Young adults who are categorised as obese should try to lose weight as this will delay the onset of getting arthritis and joint pain. Another thing about maintaining the right weight is that you will have less health problems as you grow older.
**vi) Lifestyle changes **- People who are afflicted by arthritis should participate in stress reducing activities like meditation, yoga or tai-chi.We can improve the strength and flexibility of the joints by practicing certain yoga postures. These postures include Warrior pose, Tree pose, Triangle pose, Bridge posture and Corpse pose. If you regularly practice yoga using the right postures coupled with meditation, you can get pain relief from arthritis.
**vii) Healthy and balanced diet** - Eat a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, which contain important vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin E. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as cold water fish(salmon, mackerel, and herring), flaxseed, rapeseed (canola) oil.
You can treat the arthritis pain that you are suffering with one of the above mentioned ways. You should carefully consider your circumstances and situation that you are in before deciding which approach will bring the desired outcome.

And finally a solution that I think will help you: The 21-day Step-by-step Arthritis Strategy.

One of their claims is: Completely Heal Any Type Of Arthritis In 21 Days Or Less Following This Step-By-Step Strategy – 100% Guaranteed.

I just did a quick Google search, here's a review about it: https://mrproductreviews.info/reviews/21-da...tegy/index.html

Note: It is a program to cure arthritis in the way of Chinese Medicine. Good luck!

I read somewhere glucosamine is just "to build up". The problem here is that the rotten cells should be removed first and then build new cells. Glutocsamin just builds upon rotten cells not removing them. That's scary. So I don't take it.

If you are curious, google yourself.
