nothing new about HDMI except it backward compatible with DVI and combine digital audio signal(up to 8 channel, 24-bit sample size and 192kHz sample rate) in the same cable. and signal between dvi and hdmi are same so there exist dvi to hdmi converter. google and wikipedia is your best friends.
