A television anime remake of the 1972 Mazinger Z television series. The new 26 episode series, tentatively scheduled to debut later this year (spring 2009), will be animated by BEEMEDIA and Code.
The 133rd issue of World Photo Press' Figure Oh magazine will announce on Tuesday that the Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Z-Hen remake of the classic Mazinger Z super robot manga and anime (pictured at right) will air this year. Yasuhiro Imagawa (Giant Robo, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Seven of Seven) is directing and writing this adaptation of the original story by Go Nagai (Cutie Honey, Devilman, Getter Robo) and his Dynamic Planning studio. Shinji Takeuchi (Gintama) is designing the characters, while Bandai's Tsuyoshi Nonaka (D.I.C.E.) is designing the title robot and the franchise's trademark enemies, the Kikaijū (mechanical monsters). Akira Miyagawa (Emily of New Moon) is composing the music, and BEEMEDIA and CODE are producing the animation.

A March 4 blog entry from Gakken's Animedia magazine reports that the production staff of the upcoming Shin Mazinger Shōgeki! Z-Hen anime wrote a note to emphasize that the project is a separate work from the Mazinger Z television anime of the 1970s. The Shin Mazinger staff further requested that the magazine not use phrases such as "Mazinger Z remake" or a "new Mazinger Z." (Similar to the 2000 Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo video anime series, the "Shin" in Shin Mazinger's title is the Japanese character that means "true" and not the character that means "new." All of these projects originated from Go Nagai's manga.) In fact, the magazine says that the Shin Mazinger staff asked that the magazine avoid mentioning the old television series to introduce the new series and avoid using the phrase "Mazinger Z" in big letters in article captions and such.
