Hey.

My brothers getting a new guitar... He's been saving up for a while and wants to get a GOOD acoustic guitar.

I was going to look at the Guild GAD-50 but it was sold, so I'm deciding once again. :/

It's difficult for anyone to offer opinions on this matter unless they've played both.

Based on brand name, resale value and the NT neck, I'd probably say Taylor, but sound is still No. 1 and I haven't had the chance to see/play these new Guilds.

Is there a store that sells both so that an on-the-spot comparison can be made? I'd love to check them out and give you my thoughts as well nod.gif

im curious about the guild. have yet to try it. bentley seems to be the only place with guilds am i right?

well i guess the main difference between the two is the body type. those two are very much different, it depends on your style of playing. that would be one of the major points to consider.
read up:
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/features/shapes/

as for wood and how it affects, you can dload wood & steel issue number 57 off taylor's website for free.

i'm a taylor fan, but im not ruling out guild just yet. how much is the guild going for? considered the taylor 214ce?

I think the guild is the better choice at the moment. I'm not looking into an acoustic-electric, but rather a regular acoustic.

So far I've gathered that the guild is cheaper, it HAS a resputable brand name (though, of course not as big as taylor), its cheaper, and uses solid wood rather than laminate.

I think the Guild is better in terms of specs, while the Taylor is still using a laminate back.

The guild sounds amazing too, but I have yet to try out the Taylor. The Guild is going for Rm32XX, I'm not sure the exact price. And the Taylor 214ce is going for RM3800++ from burgercis, who's prices seem MUCH MUCH cheaper than bentley. But he says he has doesn't have the 214 or 210 at the moment. so I'll wait till he tells me if he has stock.

From reviews alone, the Guild has gotten mostly positive reviews, and for the price range, the ONLY downside I can find is that it's made in china rather than US, but I've read of no problems with them.

There are also more finish options for the Guild and I think I've made my decision.
The Taylor is amazing, and I'd love to own one, but the Guild looks too good for the money, and maybe after a few years, I'll upgrade to a higher end Taylor or Martin.

thanks for all the help though. smile.gif
if anyone who has any points to change my mind, please do give input, its appreciated. smile.gif

Added on February 26, 2009, 12:46 amand yeah, bentley seems to be the only place that sells Guilds.

Probably because Guild is owned by Fender and Bentleys the main distributor.

I have not tried the guild guitar but if i were you, GUILD vs TAYLOR i will say i go for they taylor 214. It really depends on your preference what kind of model you like. Dreadnought body are mean for country song and that 214 is a grand auditorium which has the best sound for modern music i would say and alot guitarist plays it on the grand auditorium.

I personally own a Taylor 414ce and i have to say grand auditorium sounds better for me over a Dreadnought body. So play safe going for a taylor will NEVER go wrong.

Again, its basically up to your personal taste. Test both and get the feel of it, then you will know which suit you best my friend...hope that helps

goddammit. I'm so ticked off right now.

I called bentley the other day, and asked about the Guild. they said they have one in stock and I said to keep it for me.

Then I called today and they sold the LAST one yesterday. And now if I want one I'd have to order one and wait 6 months.

I'm seriously pissed right now.

well, getting the Taylor now depends if 'Burgercis' has the model.
Right now the only one he has is the 214ce, and I'm still set on a regular acoustic.

Well, I'll look into other models to consider anyway... Still hoping to get a solid wood guitar.

Hey Ali,
Go get the taylor. You won't regret it. Taylor guitars are one of the biggest names in acoustic guitars.
Plus, the Taylor is just to sexy to resist.

would you agree that for the Taylor 214, its pretty overpriced considering it doesn't use completely solid woods and the backs and sides are still laminate?

And I saw a Martin guitar online called the Martin D Classic. I've called and asked Guitar Collection AND Mahogany, but they both don't have it. :/

Has anyone seen it anywhere?

imo, anything for taylor between the big baby and 400 series shouldnt exist.
it was only a few yrs ago that the 400 series was RM4k+, now its RM6k+ which gave taylor a good excuse to release the 100 and 200 series.
but guess they need to compete in the market.

hmmm....are the 100 and 200 series that bad?

I've only played one of each quite some time ago, so I can't really say for sure. What I remember was their fit/finish were good due to the CNC production methods. They seem to get good reviews, at least on US forums unsure.gif

I'm not local, so I haven't been to many guitar shops in the Klang Valley (bought my Webber direct from Texas). Are there any places with a good selection of Taylors other than Bentley?

i wouldnt say they are bad.
its just that taylor feels a need to put some models between the big baby and 300 series due to all the price increases, where previously the 300 series was only around RM3k+.

and unfortunately, bentley is the only place to get taylors now.
but rumors are still around that smx in times square may get the taylor distributorship back pretty soon.

laminate arent all that bad, in fact some have their own views why it should be laminated. i cant really remember or post links to show you now (or maybe its some pdf file i have in my computer). im too lazy to find it now as i just finished my Differential Equations midterm paper. tongue.gif

ive played with 214ce, 214, 414ce and even had a 800 series (810 i think) kept with me in my room for weeks. when i say play i dont mean go to the shop and test. i've held and played a few chords on a GS series but i wouldnt say i've really really played it. 214ce is very good in my opinion. not as good as the 414ce (duh) but not too far from it from what i can tell (everdying can have his own opinion).

are Taylors overpriced? having a small currency doesnt help and the 400 series used to be so much more affordable. i dont agree with the price hike, but then again, a Taylor is a Taylor. it has that Taylor sound I love (and one of the best necks and overall construction). thats important, cause an acoustic sound is how its supposed to sound, unlike an electric guitar where lets say you buy a strat copy, mod the hardware and electronics, use the right amp and effects and you can get a pretty close strat sound.

oh boy im talking too much. better stop.
i want more money, i need more money, i want a(nother) Taylor.
