Looks like many fans can't accept that Gundams now involve aliens. I personally think that it is interesting and happens up more possibilities for the future

I wouldn't call it copycat since the Gundam franchise was build around the basis of Clarke's Space Odyssey series and Heimlein's Starship Troopers since the beginning (since 0079).

The whole geo-synchronized orbit thing was Clarke's idea in the first place which lead the way to modern satellite system and the concept of Space Colonies. Heck, the using of centrifugal force (rotation) for artificial gravity was first used in Space Odyssey and Starship Troopers. In the Gundam Unicorn novel, there were mention of old 'donut' shaped Colony which were later abandoned for the better and bigger Cylindrical design. The donut shaped design was first visualized in 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Moon Colony was also an important element in Clarke's work.

So, yeah, Sunrise have always based Gundam on Clarke's vision of Space Exploration. The whole Jupiter expedition is an obvious nod to the exo-planetary mission to the planet Jupiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey (the original writing was Saturn though).

The whole advance human evolution (Newtype, Coordinator, Innovator) and venture towards the exo-planet and eventually outside the solar system is an obvious homage to Clarke's work too - one of Clarke's earliest work titled 'Childhood's End' which was the base for later Space Odyssey series. 'Childhood's End' is also used in the english title of Gurren Lagann first movie.

The Militaristic and Political elements were inspired heavily by Robert A. Heimlein's Starship Troopers (not the movie but the original novel). The Naval ship ranking style was actually a by-product of the Space Battleship Yamato era though.

Don't you see the hints from all the above... Sunrise had probably being itching to put the final phase of the whole concept into the Gundam frachinse for a long time now. But since the UC Gundam (and most of the other series) has been very prominent in being quasi serious and realistic, so I doubt they would take the risk and suffer the wrath from fans especially the hardcore ones. Hence, you get Gundam OO as an escape vehicle to finally realize their fantasy...

PS: the reason behind why there's no Space Colony is Gundam OO is that the idea has long being scrapped by even NASA, the Space Tower is the latest hot stuff, since it is said to be much more realistic in terms of economy and technology (material and ect). And since Gundam OO's premise is supposed to be based upon our real world, so... Yeah, you get it.

Heck, even Tomino had admit that Space Colony is very much impossible... ~ As I heard.

the alien concept are too stupid... they should put in since season 1 if really want to use that concept... (ELS > Innovator)
if you want experience the real gundam go watch 8th MS Team.... the war should be like this series...no alien,space colony and whatever... i demand more 8th MS Team concept into future series/movie!!

i still like Super Robot wars series though...although it might be non relevant..i do hope gundam pick up their examples..ROFL..

wow that was very informative. I gain new knowledge today I do watch the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey but that's all I know (its a weird movie, really. Im not able to understand it at all. but there is some watcher who give reasons & explanation why the movie is presented that way). but really, if they want to realize the which the gundam franchise based on, they could make a new series with a new name. see if it attract gundam fans or not. by doing this the 00 series just tumpang the popularity of older series to steal the hardcore gundam fans. maybe they think a totally new series will definitely wont have much viewer coz it just suck! (subject to subjective opinion) whatever...

seriously, i think that you guys should have notice that the story will involve outerspace creature/aliens in the s1 and s2 as the objective of CB is to unite the earth for future outerspace travel and communicate with outer space "living" being (or alien).
so, if you say the alien concept suck, den u mean s1 and s2 suck too

Yeah, noticed that since the beginning, one of the quote for the movie - "The end of humanity's childhood" was also a big give away.

Yeah, I like 8th MS Team as well, but there are space colonies in there though since the short series is the in the same background as 0079...


It's just my weird habit of refering back to the sauce (source) whenever I see them in anime or other works (sensing the familiarity )... ~ It was also mention that Macross was basically inspired by the Giant series (Inherit the stars by the late James P. Hogan) where the humankind were descendant of an alien race from a planet named Minerva which was used to be between Earth and Mars.

To me 2001 is more of a visual presentation than just a movie though, it's was made with guide and council from expert at NASA and the first hardcore science fiction movie of it's kind (back then the other SF movies were only B grade ones).

Well, actually a new series would definitely would not have the same 'kick' as a well established franchise, heck this is not even the first time Sunrise and Bandai tried to do something totally different with the franchise, I mean what about that weird G Gundam and Gundam Seed and yeah, Turn-A Gundam.




PS: Anyway, to tell ya guys the truth even though I believe that it is logical...

I am assuming that they probably thought of the samething, but it is probable that they were tempted to take advantage of the 'heat before it gets cold'... Do it while the going is good, don't waste time. ~ Heck, if I am an Executive and if all I care is the profit, I would have made the same decision. Anyhow, just speculation though, there is probably not much truth in there...

I'll probably get all of the 00 DVD and BD and manga though, just for keep sake.

They should expand more out of the Gundam Unicorn series next... ~ An avoidable war, a new dark age, a new light.

As for the YT trailer, the japanese really love their , don't they...?

Oh so now Gundam involve alien, later the Gundam franchise want to follow EVA which involve religions and principle of "Godship".The gundam will be fighting demons from the underworld or angels send by god.Pilot sudenly go emo and achieve "godhood". Ending will be complicated and sux.Luckly previous gundam series already labeled as the "female characters killer" and anybody wouldnt mind if cute characters screaming miserabely while explode in the gundam cockpit.

Well, essentially the religions and angels in Evangelion are just a glorified front for a SF series. It is pretty much a 'personal' version of Hideaki Ano's own twisted and God-lified concept of 'Instrumentality of Mankind' which was inspired by a science fiction novel with the same title, 'Instrumentality of Mankind'by Cordwainer Smith.
