Im 18 this year (waitinf for SPM results)

will it be too late for me to start learning piano?
i do have some basic for theory part cause learned organ till grade 2 before

anyway, can i learn piano at musical schools i.e yamaha, without going for the test to go to a higher grade?
i don't really plan to be a pianist so the certificate is not important to me
just wanna learn cause really interested to the sound of piano

anyway, can i ask piano test and theory test grade 1, will there be all kids ??
feel shame if i were to take grade 1 test with all kids and im the only one who is 18

i am on grade 2 and i am 21 years old now... And then solo test... no one is around me T.T

u can always learn anytime
there are few kinds of courses

1) ABRSM approach - u learn the traditional way. U can request not to take exam.

2) Adult lessons - not so traditional way. Usually later can choose pop or classical

After few grades, you can learn on your own.

try it, im sure u can find some home tutors or friends who will just teach the basics of piano if you're not concerned about the certs.
since u already have some music experience it shouldnt be that difficult.
after u get the basics u can just pick up from there

Alan, try to find private tutor or something. IF can't make sure the school give u at least 1Hour lesson. Many nowadays only give 30 minutes. Damn greedy teachers

i think 30 mins practical is enough for beginner....or else u will waste time in class practising the same piece over and over again.
1 hour class can be very boring.

cant really help you out with that.. i started piano learning classical. so basically i started out like the majority of piano players here. after a while i got bored of playing the same kinda songs and i wanted to play the more modern piano rock songs (The Fray, Keane etc..) so i just use my hearing to listen to songs and play away..

I do teach at my house in Cheras. Usually adults come in to learn pop piano, kinda famous program for adult.

ABRSM is leaning more towards classical, although they include modern or jazz pieces in the exam syllabus.

Some adult prefer to learn keyboard.

It is not hard if you practice. I taught couple of adults, and most of doing pretty well. But still got some never practice because very busy with their work. The only time they practice is when they see me. Those students will have to take much longer time to learn.

i used to take keyboard lesson when i was 16...
now i'm taking piano...
i feels that piano song are much nicer to hear n play...

unless u are palying in a band, piano is way much better than keyboard.
Unless u r into composition, but thats way down the line.

how's your progress been going?

if u have good progress in your studies (maybe exposure to musical knowledge before), then maybe u can skip a few grades and go directly to your level.

there is no requirement for sitting grades 1-4. but u need to have the grade 5 theory to go for grades 6-8 practical examinations.

i skipped grade 1-3 and went directly to grade 4 when i started piano. coz i studied basic organ before that and i was clever (of course)

I think you shouldn't be ashamed lor, there is nothing wrong in starting piano late. As long as you want to learn, I think age isn't a factor =) And yea kids today start music at even younger ages, I swear when I started (I was 8) I was one of the oldest then.. which was kinda weird. But don't worry! It'll be fine! =D

Yah usually music schools encourage you to take the exams, but you don't really have to. It's a personal choice.
