Foster eyes Edwin's spot

QUOTE
Ben Foster is looking to cement his place as Manchester United's first choice, amid widespread talk the club are preparing a new contract for the goalkeeper.

A week in which Foster emerged as United's Carling Cup final hero could get even better for the 25-year-old, as it has been suggested a new four-year deal may be tabled.

Sunday's penalty shoot-out defeat of Tottenham at Wembley saw Foster produce a match-winning display between the posts, as he saved Jamie O'Hara's spot-kick to see United home.

Having overcome cruciate ligament surgery last year, and a succession of niggling injuries this term, Foster is determined to further press his claims for a regular starting berth.

Contract talks

"I've got 16 months left and nothing has been said about a new contract, but I'm sure there will be no worries," he said.

"I don't want to even think about leaving United.

"The two years I had on loan at Watford, playing week in, week out, were great. I want that here.

"I've not spoken to the manager about next season so I don't know how things will pan out. I have just got to keep doing my best and we will see what happens.

"I am at the biggest club in the world and I want to stay here for as long as I can.

"Hopefully, I'll have a decade or more here and I want this Carling Cup to be the first of many more trophies to come my way."

Capello watching

The evergreen Edwin van der Sar needs to be usurped before Foster can think about international honours but having convinced Sir Alex Ferguson of his credentials, approval from Fabio Capello is now in his sights.

"When we went up for the trophy Fabio Capello shook my hand and said 'well done'. It was the first time I had spoken to the man," he added in The Sun.

"I've got my eyes on being in the England squad for the World Cup finals in South Africa next summer. That's a big target for me, like any player.

"David James is the England No1 but there are a lot of keepers scrambling for places underneath him - Green, Carson, Kirkland, Robinson, Hart.

"I've not been in a squad since Fabio Capello took over because of injuries. And I accept Capello can't pick anyone who isn't playing regularly."

Rooney returns for Reds

QUOTE
Wayne Rooney has recovered from the virus that kept him out of Sunday’s Carling Cup final win over Tottenham and is fit for United’s Premier League trip to Newcastle on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old only recently returned from five weeks out with a hamstring injury, and after only a cameo appearance against Internazionale last week and missing out on the Wembley final, he'll be raring to go after training on Monday and Tuesday.

This is a fixture Rooney should relish; he's scored eight goals in ten games against them since joining United in 2004.

Sir Alex will "freshen up" the team that played 120 minutes against Spurs, with John O'Shea being the only injury doubt for the St James' Park visit. "We took him off on Sunday because of this problem with his heel," said the Reds boss. "It's settled down and we're going to try some new soles in his boots. Hopefully he'll be OK."

United may have a seven-point lead at the top of the table, while Newcastle languish two points above the drop zone, but even in the absence of Joe Kinnear, who underwent heart surgery recently, they have taken a respectable five points from their last four games.

"It'll be tough," admits Sir Alex. "I'll need to freshen up the team because it was a heavy pitch at Wembley. It took its toll, there were a lot of tired players at the end. We've got Berbatov, Park, Fletcher, Carrick, Rooney and Anderson who didn't play the whole game. They can come back in and I hope that freshness helps."

Sir Alex will also recall Edwin van der Sar, despite Ben Foster’s fine display and penalty shoot-out heroics at Wembley.

QUOTE(GIGGS_11 @ Mar 3 2009, 10:50 PM)
hey guys... if I remember correctly, the winner of Carling Cup will be given a chance to play in UEFA competition next season. Am I right?
If this is the case, can we contest in 2 Europe competitions (UEFA & CL) next year? Damn, should let Spurs win the final so that UEFA competition will not be wasted  tongue.gif
*
IIRC, in the event of the Carling Cup winner already qualified for another Europe competitions, the spot will be handed to 6th place in BPL.

Ferguson fires warning

QUOTE
Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his squad about getting complacent over their defence of the Premier League title.

The Red Devils have powered their way to a commanding position at the summit of the table in recent weeks, and some bookmakers have even paid out on them winning the title.

They remain four points clear of Chelsea and Liverpool, but have two games in hand on their rivals.

But Ferguson is quick to point to La Liga, where Barcelona have seen their seemingly insurmountable 11-point lead reduced to just four points.

"Barcelona have been playing Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday since January," opined Ferguson.

"They did have an 11-point lead, now it is four and for the first time this season they lost a game after being in front.

"It is a warning, and there are plenty of them, that if you take your foot off the pedal you can get a kick in the teeth."

Squad warning

Ferguson also warned his players that anyone thinking the title was in the bag would soon find themselves sidelined.

"They would have one attempt at being complacent and it would be the last," said Ferguson.

"We have plenty of bodies in the dressing room who would come down on them."

The Scot insists that winning the Premier League is their biggest opportunity to win a 'major trophy'.

"I would be happy if we only won the Premier League from this point," he said. "It is a major trophy.

"I would love to see us winning the UEFA Champions League again. That is my big desire.

"But at this moment the Premier League has to be the best opportunity.

"If we keep our heads straight and focused we have a big chance."

Boss: Rio needs games

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Rio Ferdinand's 120-minute Wembley workout has set him up nicely for the run-in at the heart of United's defence.

Rio has played in only eight of United's 15 games so far in 2009, having missed more than a month over December and January with a back injury he sustained in the warm-up against Stoke on Boxing Day.

But Sir Alex feels the defender is back in the groove after his appearance in the penalty shoot-out win over Spurs in the Carling Cup final on Sunday.

"I wanted to play Rio in the Carling Cup final because he's not played a lot of games since December," the Reds boss said in his pre-Newcastle press conference.

"I needed to get him back into his rhythm. He's a big lad and big defenders need to play games.

"Now he's got a really good game under his belt, I hope Ferdinand and [Nemanja] Vidic will be a solid partnership between now and the end of the season."

Japanese ace flattered by United

QUOTE
Rising star Takayuki Morimoto admits he is flattered by reported interest from Manchester United.

The 20-year-old's outstanding form for Serie A outfit Catania in recent months has attracted interest from a host of clubs including United and Premier League rivals Everton and Manchester City.

Morimoto, who has been with Catania for three years, has battled back from a serious knee injury and is now catching the attention of a host of clubs.

Speaking to Studio Sport, Morimoto admitted he is flattered by the interest shown but is currently focused on helping Catania avoid relegation.

Flattered

"The only thing that I care about is Catania's survival and I don't want to leave. I want to stay as close as possible to the squad and give my contribution," he said.

"Knowing that an important club like Manchester United is observing you always pleases you. We are talking about one of the best teams in the world."

The striker, who joined the Elephants in 2006 from J-League's Tokyo Verdy, is fully committed to the club and has no plans to leave anytime soon.

"I don't think about the transfer market. About these things the president and director (Pietro) Lo Monaco will think about them," he added.

"I thank them for having said that I'm not for sale for any price. My desire is to stay here for a long time."

QUOTE
Manchester United are yet to offer goalkeeper Ben Foster a new contract, his agent has confirmed.

Widespread reports had claimed that United had offered Foster a new long-term contract on the back of his Man of the Match performance in the Carling Cup final win over Spurs.

Foster saved Jamie O'Hara's spot-kick as United lifted the trophy after a 4-1 success on penalties following 120 goalless minutes.

However, his representative Lee Payne has confirmed that the England international is yet to talk fresh terms with the Premier League and European champions.

Very happy

Foster's current deal is due to expire next year.

"Reports suggesting Ben has agreed a new deal are not true," Payne told skysports.com.

"Ben is very happy at the moment, but as yet we have not held any talks with United."

Following United's Carling Cup triumph, Sir Alex Ferguson was quick to pay tribute to Foster and insisted he is set to become England's No.1

Next season could be VDS's last season so we will have to decide who will likely to takeover as #1 after that? Kuszczak? Or Foster? Then we will need to give that person more game time from now on till the end of next season to prepare him?

Vidic focused on his own game

QUOTE
Nemanja Vidic does not believe memorising Fulham's statistics will give Manchester United an edge in their FA Cup meeting this weekend.

The Red Devils can more one step closer to another Wembley appearance if they overcome Roy Hodgson's Cottagers in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

Fulham are likely to have Andy Johnson and Bobby Zamora spearheading their attack against United, although Vidic has no plans to do his homework on their attacking patterns.

The Serbia international believes that if he plays well then The Red Devils, who are seeking an unprecedented quintuple this term, will have a good chance of progression.

No homework

"I don't really study statistics of our upcoming opponents," he told Inside United.

"There is too much talk about shots on target and things like that.

"Sometimes it can be about luck, other times we do the job well.

"The main thing is that we win games and win trophies. Then we can be proud of what we have done at the end of each season."

United agree Antwerp deal

QUOTE
Manchester United have raided their feeder club Royal Antwerp to seal a deal for youngster Charni Ekangamene.

The 15-year-old spent time training with United's youth set-up in November and again in January.

On the back of the trials Sir Alex Ferguson has sanctioned the deal to bring in Ekangamene, who has signed a pre-contract with the club.

He will become a professional at United when he turns 16 but until then he will stay with Antwerp.

"He is a great talent," Antwerp youth director Alex Vervecken told HNB.

Antwerp have confirmed the deal on their website, commenting that they are happy to have agreed terms with United.

No fresh injuries for cup tie

QUOTE
United have no new injury concerns ahead of the FA Cup quarter-final trip to Fulham on Saturday.

Sir Alex will take a 20-man squad to Craven Cottage with the manager confirming he will make changes to the side that won at Newcastle in midweek.

"It's an opportunity to keep the players' engines running," Sir Alex told reporters at his pre-match press conference. "They have all been applying themselves very well, so rotating the squad has been working well."

The Reds' boss also revealed that Gary Neville should be back in training next week, while Wes Brown and Rafael are making good progress with their recovery from injury.

"Wes needs a couple more weeks, but Gary may be back a bit sooner - hopefully he’ll be training with us again next week," said Sir Alex. "Rafael will be out for a little longer with a hairline fracture of his ankle."

United are returning to London for the second time in a week following last Sunday's Carling Cup final. With Wednesday's demanding trip to St James' Park sandwiched in between, Sir Alex is grateful to have been able to call upon a strong squad to freshen up his starting XI for the games.

"It certainly helps us to make changes," he said. "We played on a tiring pitch at Wembley, then we had to travel back home and up to the north-east, which itself can be exhausting.

"But there’s no doubt the changes helped and against Fulham hopefully they’ll help again."
