If you are doing a paper, might i suggest these resources:

1. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV- Text revision
2. Any psychiatry textbook. I recommend Kaplan and Sadock Textbook of Psychiatry

B-??hehehe..thanx a lot for everyone..actually depression is better than bipolar disorder rite??
lets talk about the symptom or the causes that lead to depression

Dude, this cant be explained here. Go do some reading on your own. Get the books i told you about. Depression is not better than bipolar, there is no comparison between the two.

They causes are usually life stressors, but organic causes need to be ruled out first. The way life stressors cause depression stems from a theory called Learned Helplessness, i forget the name of the guy who postulated it. Go google that and learn more. It explains why some people get depression and some dont despite being faced by the same challenge. It has an interplay with who you are, how you solve problems and your environment and the people around you.

like i said earlier, people with manic episodes only are classified as having Bipolar Disorder as well. There is no given diagnosis as Mania, although it is a clinical entity.

There are also Bipolar I and Bipolar II mood disorders which I am not going into details.

Suicidal ideations and attempts are part of the depressive phenomenon. I am sorry about your friend but the psychiatrist probably tried the best that he could. Its not possible to accurately determine who will commit suicide and who would not although there may be some signs that may suggest an increased likelihood.

Use the DSM IV, we tend to use it more than the ICD-10

This is inaccurate. Bipolar disorder is NOT a split personality disorder. Do NOT confuse the two. In fact there is no diagnosis of split personality in the DSM-IV. It is also not schizophrenia, which is a type of psychosis characterized by delusions, bizarre beliefs and hallucinations. Think about the movie " a beautiful mind". Thats schizophrenia

a beautiful mind??i must find and watch it

i read Kaplan's in the morning & when i need info ONLY..
that book makes me damn sleepy..
Oxford is quite fun to read.. with it's "cold jokes" too.. tongue.gif

mega_lara_86,
the diagnosis of Depression / Bipolar might not have too much bearing on your friend's fate..
because from your post, it would seems almost as if the doctor diagnosed her to have Pneumonia when she was having lung Cancer..

lynxs and aerikh, are you two psychiatrists or trainee-psychiatrists? Since u two seem to be familiar with DSM-IV and ICD-10 and the "dry" Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry (whooping 1000+ pages).

I guess here in Malaysia, doctors tend to use DSM-IV more? lol i always forget to ask my psychiatrist about that.....

I was diagnosed with Bipolar last year. Previously was diagnosed with Depression. Am seeking treatment at the moment at Selayang Hospital. I was searching for support groups for emotional support and bumped into this site. I'd be very grateful If anyone can direct me to any related forum/site that would be helpful for my situation .

can anyone explain what are the differences between bipolar disorder and depression?? icon_question.gif
i google it, and this is what i got..i think its not reliable enuff..hehehehe.. tongue.gif

Bipolar disorder is an illness that consists of alternating periods of elevated moods, called manic episodes, and depression. Mood swings run on a spectrum from mild mania (called hypomania) to more severe, debilitating highs. Periods of mania can last for hours, days, weeks or even months before the person plunges back into depression.

Unfortunately, bipolar disorder is commonly misdiagnosed as depression because the manic symptoms--such as increased energy, heightened mood and increased sex drive--have a positive effect on the patient. It feels good so it's not perceived as a problem. The low periods of depression are generally what first bring a patient in for help.

Untreated or improperly treated bipolar disorder can have serious consequences for the patient. Mania can lead to poor decision making and impulsiveness that can wreak havoc in a person's life. Properly treated, however, a person with bipolar disorder can lead a peaceful and productive life without the extremes of mood.

Depression does not necessarily leads to wanting to suicide. Bipolar is not merely over active, it is much more complex than that. Depression could possibly be part of the bipolar symptom.
