MY METHOD OF RIDDING OF SWIFTLET GUANO FROM THE BHS
1) Every time after harvest of nests in my BH, my workers would sweep and scoop the bird shit into the few large plastic buckets or plastic round washing containers which I placed in the 4 corners on each floor.
2) After a few harvests, the buckets are filled with bird shit. This shit is then transferred into the black plastic rubbish bags and kept in a corner.
3) Most of the times, a couple of my farmer friends would come and pick them up when it reaches certain quantity. I used to give them free. They ferment it into organic fertilizers. The latest batch of almost one pick-up load of shit was given to a new friend who insistently paid me RM 400 for it.
NIAH CAVE
In 2001, we visited the Niah Cave invited by Dr Lim Chan Koon who was doing research there and also the co-author for the book, SWIFTLETS OF BORNEO, BUILDERS OF EDIBLE NESTS. We witnessed the many local natives collected the guano from the floor of the Niah Cave and each carried this guano in bag of almost 40 kg slowly walked down the few km winding jungle tracks and wholesaled to the traders. Understand at that time the detailed price was RM 4/kg.
The composition of the swiftlet guano is almost equivalent to the bats as both are insectivorous. Understand that the quality of the organic fertilizer made from this guano is considered higher grade than those cattle, goat or chicken dung.
It may be high time for a new swiftlet organic fertilizer trader emerged with so many birds shit to be supplied for either free of charge or at very low cost from so many BHs in Malaysia these days.
