If you don't wanna use the internet to load the map, you can pre-install the full maps using maploader. This will download the map via your PC and copy it over to the SD card to be used.

I think for Wi-FI it's theoretically 1KM. But, with walls and all blocking signals, it will be far less. Maybe 300M or so.
