my question is:
which is the better on the long run? using ur finger ( nails etc ) or simply getting customized with using picks? That is like asking: Which is better....apples or orange? Chocolate or vanilla?
There is no right answer. It all depends on what type of music you like to play.
There are fantastic fingerstylists:
Ed GerhardAnd there are also fantastic flatpickers:
Robert BowlinThe real question is....why make yourself choose? You have a lot of time to learn both. Learning all sorts of different styles and techniques makes you a better player in the end
I personally play mostly solo fingerstyle - blues, jazz, swing, pop, etc. But once in a while, it's fun to flatpick as well, especially Robert Bowling songs (see link above). I even have a friend in the US who sent me a RM60(!!!) pick as a gift
Some advice about playing fingerstyle. In my opinion, the best tone comes from using very short nails in combination with a good fingerpick (like Fred Kelly's delrin Slick Picks). When I say short, I really mean short - if I look at my right hand from the "palm side", I almost cannot see the nails. This way, you get the feel of playing with flesh, but the volume and clarity of nails

(for those who are not familiar, it's "I Want You Back" by Michael Jackson, recorded many years ago when he was a kid in the Jackson 5)
