Both.
Pick playing of course is important. It's very hard (but not impossible) to play with fingers on say, electric guitar, so you'll need to learn to play with a pick.

But then again, you'll need to learn to use fingers for things like chickin' pickin' (which is a combination of fingers and pick playing) and plucking.

That is like asking: Which is better....apples or orange? Chocolate or vanilla?

There is no right answer. It all depends on what type of music you like to play.

There are fantastic fingerstylists: Ed Gerhard
And there are also fantastic flatpickers: Robert Bowlin

The real question is....why make yourself choose? You have a lot of time to learn both. Learning all sorts of different styles and techniques makes you a better player in the end thumbup.gif

I personally play mostly solo fingerstyle - blues, jazz, swing, pop, etc. But once in a while, it's fun to flatpick as well, especially Robert Bowling songs (see link above). I even have a friend in the US who sent me a RM60(!!!) pick as a gift shocking.gif

Some advice about playing fingerstyle. In my opinion, the best tone comes from using very short nails in combination with a good fingerpick (like Fred Kelly's delrin Slick Picks). When I say short, I really mean short - if I look at my right hand from the "palm side", I almost cannot see the nails. This way, you get the feel of playing with flesh, but the volume and clarity of nails

Added on February 15, 2009, 10:41 pmBy the way, here's a solo fingerstyle piece that I am currently learning. It's quite fun to play, hahaa!

(for those who are not familiar, it's "I Want You Back" by Michael Jackson, recorded many years ago when he was a kid in the Jackson 5)

I Want You Back (solo acoustic)

I'm liking Derek Trucks fingerstyle... but playing electric with fingers seems... weird.

Mak are you a musician or something like that? Care to make an introduction of yourself?

Wait a minute....how did you know my name? sweat.gif

What would you consider to be a musician? If it's someone who makes a living out of playing/recording/teaching guitar, then no, I am not. I actually teach engineering in a university.

If you're talking about someone who loves playing, teaching and learning about guitars, then yes rclxms.gif
