erh... there's no problem really to do that. But it's better and recommended to charge when it is in red.

i never played till red only charge
i always charge whenever i want to
i did the same thing to my phone and 2 years already my phone batt still going strong
i;ve read somewhere that do not always use your lithium ion batt until it's flat before charging it...best is to charge it when it's below 50% as these batt are best kept fully charged

but i think if i remember correctly is checking it from the ds menu. (u know, when u didn't insert any game)

estimate for yourselve...let's say the full charge can last you 10 hours...when u played around 5-6 hours, then it's time to charge...
But I would prefer to charge it frequently.

Prevent the Memory Effect - Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries which do not suffer from the memory effect.

so don't worry about not using it till it's flat...

Well, according to Nintendo, the Nintendo DS's power light will change from green to red when the battery life is around 30%.

Sauce: http://tinyurl.com/6qp26 for some non technical info of the battery.

Edit: And according to Battery University, a lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.

Sauce: http://tinyurl.com/djkn. Read more at http://tinyurl.com/abxgrk about lithium ion battery care sheet.
