for me i don't have much problem using windows vista but i'll stick to windows xp.
reason? hp not powerful enough.
oh, regarding the vista eat a lot of ram problem, actually that's not a problem at all. vista looks like copying file slower but it's actually faster, reason is because xp do not show the full process of copying. winrar performers way faster in vista, the ram is to make vista run faster, but when you launch powerful application like Maya, this is how vista works.

windows xp = default ram usage 300mb + maya ram usage, say 500mb = 800mb
windows vista = default ram usage 800mb + maya ram usage, say 500mb, (you only have 1gb, not even memory). vista default will set to 100mb to let maya use cuz u are using maya that time.

xp works the same, but not as effective as how vista work.

this is the answer to those who keep on complaining ram problem just by viewing the ram usage from the task manager when it's not doing anything.
