What its all about

It’s as simple as a flick of the switch.

What began as a campaign to get Sydneysiders to turn their lights off, has grown to become one of the world’s biggest climate change initiatives. In 2009, at 8.30pm on March 28, people around the world will turn their lights off for one hour – Earth Hour. We’re aiming to reach one billion people, more than 1000 cities, all joining together in a global effort to show that its possible to take action on global warming.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with 2.2 million homes and businesses turning their lights off for one hour. Only a year later and this event had become a global sustainability movement with up to 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.

Earth Hour 2009 is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to take responsibility and to get involved in working towards a sustainable future. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Europe to The Americas will stand in darkness. People across the world will turn off their lights and join together in creating the vital conversation about the future of our precious planet.

Over 64 countries and territories are participating in Earth Hour 2009. This number grows every day as people realise how such a simple act, can have such a profound result in affecting change.

Earth Hour is a message of hope and a message of action. Everyone can make a difference.

Join us for Earth Hour 2009, turn off your lights at 8.30pm Saturday 28 March and sign-up here at earthhour.org

Earth Hour Launched !! [Press Release]

PRIME MINISTER ENDORSES GLOBAL EFFORT:
WWF’S EARTH HOUR

Kuala Lumpur, 10th December 2008: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi indicated his support and endorsement of Malaysia’s participation in Earth Hour 2009. To date, 74 cities in 62 countries have committed to switch off for WWF’s Earth Hour in 2009. WWF-Malaysia is currently discussing the potential participation of Malaysian cities in Earth Hour 2009 with relevant authorities. The campaign, which hopes to reach out to more than one billion people in 1,000 cities around the world, asks individuals, businesses and governments to switch off lights for just one hour on Saturday, 28th March 2009 at 8:30pm to create a platform of support for action on climate change.

Earth Hour aims to demonstrate unprecedented solidarity and provide a visual global mandate that will put the heat on world leaders meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009 to strike a new global deal on climate change.

The lights out initiative, which began in Sydney in 2007 as a public awareness raising campaign, has grown significantly over the past two years and now has 74 cities ready to flick the switch in 2009. Cities already committed include Los Angeles, Las Vegas, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rome, Manila, Oslo, Cape Town, Warsaw, Lisbon, Singapore, Istanbul, Mexico City, Toronto, Dubai and Copenhagen.

Some of the international icons which will go dark for an hour in solidarity include the world’s tallest hotel tower (the Burj Dubaiin Dubai), the tallest towers in the Americas (the CN tower in Toronto) and the southern hemisphere (the Sky Tower in Auckland) and Moscow’s Federation Tower. Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf has confirmed his support for Earth Hour while Quirinale - the official residence of the President of the Italian Republic, Giorgio Napolitano – will also turn its lights off. Other landmarks which plan to merge into the night sky include the normally floodlit Table Mountain over Cape Town, South Africa and the Sydney Opera House.

Director General of WWF International Jim Leape said, “When leaders gather in Copenhagen in December 2009 to negotiate a new deal on climate they must feel that the eyes of the world are upon them. Earth Hour provides an opportunity for the public to send a powerful signal that they are watching and expect action.”

Executive Director of Earth Hour Global, Mr Andy Ridley said 2009 was the planet’s ‘destiny year’, with critical decisions needed to be made at the Copenhagen meeting on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, “2009 is the year we decide the future of the earth. It is the year the world finally agrees on a plan to massively reduce carbon emissions across the globe. This is the time to invest in new ways of doing business in a new low carbon economy. We must all step over the line together. The sum of our actions today can change history and secure the future of our planet.”

The extensive WWF conservation network also has more than 30 teams working in countries such as Malaysia, Brazil, Greece, India, Peru, Spain, Switzerland and France, ready to support a local Earth Hour roll out.

If you would like to pledge your support of Earth Hour log on to www.earthhour.org and sign up.

Was wondering, is it possible to pin this topic ?? It will be great if everyone participate in this event. By turning off the light, we can make a difference (Global Warming).

PS : Please ignore me if this request is too much.

Actually I sign up a form last year as like on every Monday, off lights from 8 - 9pm for 1 hour to support the event. At that time we requested and collected a lot of signature to show support of this event. It's glad to see this now officially up. Topic will be pin until 28th March then.

Please spread the news out to more people.

well everything needs a 1st step .. which for instance of this case is turning off the lights ... oh btw, if i din rmb wrong .. main reason is not about reducing electricity used but its to reduce electricity produced thus reducing certain type of 'gas' emitted onto Earth from producing electricity which further make the air around us 'abit' more cleaner and by all this reduce glabal warming...
correct me if i am wrong. icon_rolleyes.gif
u have a good idea here of switching off servers but i doubt that will happen coz i am kinda sure some people will just leave their lights on.

peace !

B: yea...

A: lets sign the online petition on the slow connection so the connection will be better !

B: will it work? wat happen next?

A: the petition will be sent to the top management of tmnet and possibly the government of msia !!!!

B: . .. . . . . . .

took this from the star

ISN’T participating in WWF’s Earth Hour a bit irresponsible? It’s the perfect example of “slacktivism” - symbolic, with minimal practical effect. Why limit ourselves to turning off the lights for a mere hour every year? Shouldn’t it be our second nature to conserve energy whenever we can?

WWF’s main goal is to raise awareness on climate change. But what message is it sending when Sydney celebrated its Earth Hour with a fireworks show? Tel Aviv, for its part, organised a rock concert, which was powered by pedal generators and falafel oil.

And, one wonders how much energy is wasted in marketing the event throughout the world.

A fellow Malaysian summed it up best: “During the Earth Hour, I’ll turn of my lights then I’ll be driving to the nearby Carrefour. They can’t afford to turn off theirs, can they?”

Rather than switching off the lights for one hour, and then proudly claiming “I did my part”, do what our Government says: ubah gaya hidup (change our lifestyle).

If we’re really serious about minimising our carbon footprint, we should go back to the Stone Age. Then, every hour would be Earth Hour.

AL GORILLA,
Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.

I rather stop making the global warming worst than doing nothing.
I rather help spreading words about it than just saying it no point.

Earth Hour is one of the way to build awareness among people. Just like you said, to change our way of living.
This kind of campaign is the starting point to make sure people are really aware of the current situation of global warming and start changing their lifestyle.

From Sydney it spreads all around the world. Every year the the participating countries are increasing.
I am sure the awareness will also increase among ourselves.
Its an EFFORT for God sake. Of course la you cannot expect something to change on a bit. Pfft~!
Its only been 3 years la bro.

Government encourage us to change our life. The way we living it. If supporting Earth Hour is one of the way to start to change it doesn't it mean we are following what they encourage us to do?

Shouldn’t it be our second nature to conserve energy whenever we can?
Earth Hour campaign ENCOURAGE people to shuts their unnecessary lights for an hour during 28 March. It is part of the campaign.
Again, to build awareness how conserving energy is important. It should be in ourselves to do keep on doing this. Not only during 28.

Its totally in ourselves whether we want to stop it or just doing it for fun.

LAWL!

sadly most ppl doing it for fun just bcos of the marketing done by wwf and other org (some which use it as free publicity)..... u really think they care ? unless their life is affected by the global warming in a hard way... people wont do anything ... thats human nature....

yes.. we know that africans are starving.... no clean water..... so wats next ? starve for a day campaign ?
then wat? oh... i participated by not eating for one day.... yea.. it will raise awareness so people will do something about the hungry africans.... then wat?
after few days... people will just forget about it... they have more important things in their life to care about....

electric cars been around since more than 10 years ago... y not the countries invest on it ?
cos oil is profitable.....

so since ur supporting this thing... may i ask.... wat changes u made in ur life to "save the earth" ??
yea things like saving electricity..... its more to saving money than saving earth

oh yea... i "did my part" though by turning off almost everything every single night when i go to sleep for few hours whistling.gif
i believe majority in the world does that everynite smile.gif

and to help "save the earth" ..... i WONT drive to any events on sat.... or buy any wrist bands made by factories which pollute the earth

Yep. Saving electricity, save the power consumption.
Of course by doing that I save money in paying my monthly bills yawn.gif

Why would you want to know what I did to save the mother earth?
Why don't you ask yourself what you did for her?

Like I said, it is more to the people themselves. What their point of view of the results in doing something like this.
For you maybe it is pointless.
For others who are still care and concern about the global warming, campaign like this is one of the way to show their supports.
If people forget it because there are a lot of important things they need to concentrate on then it is up to them.
This campaign doesn't force you to do it. It just a campaign.

Free publicity? Of what may I ask?
Global warming? It is for a good cause doesn't it?
It is not like we have to pay anything to support it. Come to think of it, you actually save yourself an hour of electrical bills. yawn.gif yawn.gif
The advertisement doesn't cause you a penny does it?

As a normal people, this kind of thing is the least we can do in return comparing to what the mother earth has given us.
Oh well. Some people just don't understand the importance of this kinda thing.

Talking about stone age...
Well, if sacrificing an hour of turning off non essential lights is so problematic wonder how to survive during that age with totally no electricity. yawn.gif yawn.gif

lol did i say its problematic to turn off for an hour ?

the whole thing is just pointless
i did tell u.... i "did my part" by switching off almost everything when i sleep whistling.gif
and its for everyday smile.gif

the publicity is when. . . the pictures of certain landmark.... big organization... or names of those will appear in the internet or newspaper just bcos they will participate in the earth hour....

just bcos of the marketing gimmick.....

so u must be going to celebrate the event eh?
where? midvalley? klcc?
whistling.gif

already bought ur wristband????
hmmm

maybe i shud sell low cost earth hour t shirts at a high price during the events....
u will buy eh??

i guess most of the people has miss-understand or under-estimate the purpose of this program.
the main purpose of the program is to collect 1 billion of votes from worldwide to request for official government policies to take action against global warming problem.
so u off your light is to put your vote, but not to decrease the global warming..
this program is set on night time 8.30pm to 9.30pm but not day time because even u off your light on day time, no people can see you are voting for it..
beside that, u need only to turn off the light to vote, but not all electric equipments.
lastly, if u really want to be the part to save earth more than other, u should automatically not wasting in electricity usage daily..

maybe TS should state more clearly in the 1st post, so that people do not misunderstanding on Earth Hour.

Good for you. that's the most energy saving effort.

For the "lights off one hour" energy saved, alot of energy and resources are wasted in the fanfare and event.

Why not just "simply" turn off lights when the time comes. and turn in back on one hour later? Rather than participating in events in groups and places. These events consume resources and energy too. And its not the matter of who's sponsoring it/ and who's brand logo will be there all the time.

Objective is noble. but its been abused by various parties hiding behind the cloak of "energy conversation" to organise various events that waste alot of resources (T-shirts/flyers/banners/... all these comes from mother nature herself).

hahaha, thanks for the info~~
anyway, you're killing the TREES with your 1000 pieces HIGH QUALITY PRINTING,
what is the purpose of this event then??
*
u r wrong.
The purpose is we want to create awareness about global warming.
we are collecting support from people for global warming issue, and as well create the awareness to people. Those papers or flyers or forms or whatever printed for this event is not wasted, because after this, more and more people are aware of it. They would realize how sick the mother earth is and what can we do for her.

It's very obvious just turn off an hour will not help much but what we are aiming for is long term. Everyday, how many people out there are actually wasting the electricity? How many are aware of it? By doing this, trying to let people know the fact that our mother earth is sick, just hope more people will turn off the electricity whenever they are not using it.

Thus, the purpose of this event is not asking people to group together for whatever any celebration but creating awareness and getting all the support against global warming. IF you really love yourself, you should love the earth. Always remember, without the earth, where are you going to stay? She has been so kind and tolerate to us, it is time for us to do something to protect her.

QUOTE(eggy @ Mar 25 2009, 04:45 PM)

I was wondering. How many LYN members will be logged on this forum in the dark during the 1 hour period. LOL
Turning on your pc with PSU of 500W - 1200W will defeat the purpose of the campaign.
So, to really do your part, all must abandon LYN during that period. biggrin.gif.
Will it record the lowest number of logged on user in the history of LYN. biggrin.gif

(PS: I am not against this campaign)

But seems like many Malaysians are not doing their part.
Why? Is just 1 hour to create an awareness about global warming.

Thanks, I just speak out what I have in mind and what I think I can share with people around.
I know not much people know about it, this is why we need to work even harder to let more people to know about it. It definitely can be from 20% up to 100%! I believe we can make a change as long as we don't give up.

Well, I was having my bbq gathering with my best friends, but we still turn off the light and continue with our gathering, even we can't really see things but we enjoyed and really happy with it. I'm so glad that my best buddies they actually support it.

During that hour, I'm really happy to get the news that most people who sign up themselves with me, they really off their lights and showing their support. smile.gif

Capsquare did an amazing job for earth hour, lots of fun stuff to do! Thousands of people gathered for the walk of hope as well...
I dont know if half of them were in it just to take part in a fun event or did they really know what the purpose of the event was? Nvtless, if earth hour can increase awareness in half of the people that showed up at capsquare, we've got a damn good chance to do some good for Mother earth.

To all the cynics and the people on the lrt talking REALLY LOUDLY abt Earth Hour being a total waste of time, let me ask you this. What have YOU done during that hour? Support Earth Hour next year and also even more planet-saving events! Its not much, but its a first step which can go a long way.
