1. it'll affect the volume, if one pickup is too much higher/lower than another...not sure about tone...hmmm

2. i like my neck pup to be higher. try playing around with it...

The lower the pickup, the lower the output. Too high and sustain will decrease and will start to sound bad. It's very important to level you pickups TO YOUR OWN PREFERENCES. Most pickups are setup to have a balance output, but some like a bump in the neck for solos... etc.

Try pressing the last fret and level your pickups to more or less 2-3mm to the bottom of the string, but don't put them too close together. It can also depends on the pickups output, playing styles and your own preferences.. It's something you can experiment with without worries.

The closer the pickup is to the string, the higher the magnetic pull on the string reducing sustain. Generally, you want your pickups to be gradually lowered as far away from the strings as possible moving towards the neck position as the string vibration is the strongest and most easily affected nearing the centre of the string length.. You can get the bridge pickup pretty close to the strings as vibration is weakest near the bridge..

Set your bridge pickup so that it gives a good output volume, loud enough to be as far away possible from the strings.. Then,by using your bridge pickup height as a reference point, gradually lower all the pickups in relation with the bridge pickup with the neck ending up the lowest.. Of course, you have to make sure all your pickups are matched first, ex. your bridge pickup is a high output model and the neck is a low output model..

i set my bridge pickup really close to the string for more output and offset it by setting my neck pickup a little lower but too low tongue.gif
