How many times have we heard or read about 'the next big things' or the next/future legend in a player? Too much hype about the player either they will become what people compared him to be or a flop ended up playing in the lower club or even worst in lower league like Championship and League 1.
But do you believe in 'the next big thing'?? The Next Maradona, The Next Pele etc. Discuss.

Djemba-Djemba - The next Viera Liam Miller - The next Roy Keane Bellion - The next Henry Jordi - Then next Cruyff
Basically, I don't believe in the next big thing until it is really proven.

I really dislike it when players are tagged as "The Next [insert legend player name here]". No 2 players are the same. There will never be another Maradona or Pele or Zidane. But I do believe that every generation or so there will be one or two outstanding "cracks" that really sets them apart. But they will be unique.

Messi is not the next Maradona, he is already at that level.
The next Maradonas are Diego Buananotte and Pablo Piatti.

Not sure if some of those legends would have made it in the modern game.

No idea about 'the next' thingy. Many great players out there doesn't need that to get forward but it will definitely mount pressure on the player who branded THE NEXT [?]
One thing i can assure you, there is always The Next Maldini.

agree with a few posters here, usually good players will not need the tag 'the next [insert great player's name here]'. if they're good they'll just be '[insert the player's name here]'. most of the time the next XXXXXs are just a bunch of overrated players who'll, most likely than not, flop big time. but of course, there's a few exception. i've never heard cristiano ronaldo being called the next yadda yadda yadda, he's just known as cristiano ronaldo. big name enough. i'm using man utd's player as example instead of liverpool's so to prevent this thread from becoming another 'my club is better than yours' thread.

But they will be unique. I have exactly same opinion as you. And i don't really believe in the "next [legend name]" especially if the player is a British player or to be more specific if the player is English/Scottish/Irish and also most of the "next [legend name]" in BPL MOSTLY turned to be a flop. Manchester United (and Tottenham) had the most flop player in BPL in the past before SAF started to be careful in his purchase. This post has been edited by maxizanc: Feb 5 2009, 11:15 PM

Though there's some big flop, but there's still some player live up to the expectation, live up to the media what they touted him as. I wonder if anyone touted John Terry as any big star name when he was young? That push aside. Any player who hasn't been touted as next <insertnamehere>, but actually surpass the best player that is playing in his position? This post has been edited by Belphegor: Feb 8 2009, 02:26 PM
