QUOTE
Bayonetta Brings Devil May Cry Aesthetic To a New Level

From Croft to Cammy, I’ll take a female protagonist over some cheesy line-spewing pretty boy any day of the week.

So Bayonetta, the upcoming third-person actioner from Platinum Games (compiled of key members from Okami’s Clover Studio), is high on my list of games to play.

While I’m inclined to focus on the the eponymous, gun-footed heroine, the game’s real draw is its pedigree; aside from the Clover connection, the game’s director, Hideki Kamiya, had a hand in creating the Devil May Cry franchise.

One look at Bayonetta’s dripping-with-goth environments, super-stylized combat, and crazy-ass creatures, and Kamiya’s influence will hit you like an oversized demon sword. In fact, it wouldn’t be out of line to sum up Bayonetta as “Devil May Cry with a woman”, as it absolutely oozes with similarities in all the best ways.

Most prominent of these, are the game's effective use of fast-paced, over-the-top action and oversized boss baddies.

When checking out the game at a recent Sega event in New York, my demo opened with a playable prologue set 500 years before the game’s story (Bayonetta is an older-than-dirt witch), that saw Bayonetta battling atop a rapidly falling clock tower.

As the Big Ben-looking structure raced toward its brick-breaking fate, Bayonetta stylishly dispensed some of the game’s antagonist angles—that actually look like clean cut demons—with the dual pistols in her hands and attached to her high heels.

Another battle saw a screen-filling foe erupt from the ground, fists first, right before picking up the stone cobbled bridge Bayonetta was standing on and rattling it like a stick. Both scenarios hinted at a focus on highly produced and polished set-piece battles.

When our angel-slayer isn’t strutting through epic encounters, she’s fighting determined hordes of low level beasties, with style to spare.

In addition to her four-gun arsenal, she packs the expected high-kicking acrobatics of a game with Devil May Cry pedigree as well as some special attacks. Most impressive are her torture moves—acquired by collecting orbs during regular battle—that allow her to summon up old-school killing machines such as iron maidens and guillotines.

While the title is brimming with eye candy at every turn, it was these creative kills that made a lasting impression; watching her kick an enemy into one of these devices, then witnessing the resulting head-lopping, torso-impaling deaths, had me craving some play time in this strictly hands-off demo.

These wicked encounters should have prepared me for what was next, but I’m guessing nothing could prep even the most seasoned gamer for Bayonetta’s naughty bits-revealing hair attacks.

The bespectacled heroine is totally covered in hair, but unlike your Speed-O sportin’ uncle; her hair is more like form-fitting black leather, wrapping skin tight around her taunt. In fact, the only time it really looks like actual hair is when it unravels for a totally bizarre—and awesome—finishing attack. When a boss is weak, she unspools the menacing mane into an enormous hair dragon—I’m not kidding—while players mash buttons to ensure the hirsute beast finishes the fight. All the while, the mostly-naked Bayonetta watches on.

Admittedly, this alone sold me on the game. And despite having only a hands-off demo to check out, I see a lot of promise in this title.

Its adrenaline-amping action, engaging art style, and solid pedigree guarantee it a spot on my must-play radar. That said, I’ll need some hands-on time to get a true reading on its potential, as it’s breakneck pace could spell trouble if the camera and controls can’t keep up. Still, based on my brief time with Bayonetta, I’m already counting the days till our next date.

Soskicap:
Bayonetta

bayonetta progress report

important note from the report
-So who is this Bayonetta lady, anyway? Well, apparently she's a witch and the last of an ancient clan. She finds herself in the modern day, with no memory of her childhood, and travels to the fictional European city Vigrid in search of her past. This - as is always the way - seems to revolve around finding a blue gem that goes with the red one she currently wears. You get the idea. All you really need to know is this is a balls-out action game set amongst glorious European architecture, against 'The Lumen Sage' - evil angels and monstrous demonic guardians.

-Yes, evil angels. Many of the enemies you come up against literally have wings on their backs and halos hovering above their heads (which you collect and use to buy new weapons and upgrades). They'd kill you as soon as look at you, however, so you shouldn't feel too bad about thrashing them to the point where they literally explode in a shower of gore. Your cloven-hoofed enemies wield a number of weapons, including spiked metal balls on chains, huge bugles that also seem to double as muskets and staffs with razor-sharp metal arrays atop. Adding to her already formidable ability set, Bayonetta can wield these weapons herself, resulting in some pretty sweet moves. She can plant the staff, for instance, then spin around it like it's a stripper pole, firing her stiletto guns in all directions. In a nice touch, Bayonetta can even use items as weapons. In the level we've been discussing, she picks up a novelty oversized key, which soon doubles as a key-sword (not as cool as a key-tar, but close). Ever seen an angel run through with a key? After playing Bayonetta you will have.

-The controls are pretty straightforward. Square is shoot, Circle is kick, Triangle is punch, Cross is jump and right R2 is dodge. You string together most combos as you'd expect. Hit Triangle four times then pause and hit it again, for instance, and you'll chain a flurry of punches into a portal punch, where a giant demonic fist hurtles out of a portal above the enemy, punching it into the ground. Hit Circle, on the other hand, then rotate the left stick 360 degrees and Bayonetta will pose upside down, firing off the guns strapped to her stilettos. You can even control the direction of fire. Dodging is important too, as successfully evading an enemy attack at the last second sends Bayonetta into 'Witch Time', aka bullet-time.

-There are also a number of cinematic kills in the game, which are executed with a simple button press when prompted. One might see a guillotine appear, with Bayonetta repeatedly kicking the enemy in the ass until he falls into it and is decapitated. (Shades of God Hand!) Another sees an enemy smashed to bits in an iron maiden, while a third has Bayonetta hook a chain around an angel's neck in mid-air, then yank it back to shower the area with gibs. We'd have liked a little more control over these moves, but they're cool nonetheless. Perhaps the biggest potential weakness in the combat, however, is the lack of manual lock-on. The auto system seems to do a decent job, however, so we'll reserve judgment until we go hands-on (which should be soon).

-As you can see from the screens, this is an absolutely stunning-looking game. One moment you're running along a vaulted and somewhat ecclesiastical mosaic-tiled corridor, the light streaming in from the tall windows along one side, the next you're walking the paths of a verdant tree-lined garden, a bubbling fountain its centrepiece. There are numerous visual flourishes to enjoy too: the fact that you knock off the aforementioned cherub boss' armour and even start to expose the muscle beneath his skin; the animalistic qualities of Bayonetta – her butterfly wings after double jumping, the hair dragon, her panther form which can be used to move at speed; the level of detail on Bayonetta's model, right down to the mole on her chin, the patterns on her outfit and the red and black motif in her attacks.
-Yes, this game is nothing short of vivid, and almost explodes out of the screen at times. Perhaps the best example of the kind of spectacle Bayonetta is trying to achieve, in fact, is the other level Sega demoed (which is apparently the game's opening sequence). In it, Bayonetta fights alongside another woman - at this point we don't know who she is - on the face of a destroyed clock tower as it falls off a cliff. It's falling high above an ominous planet's dark surface with a huge moon hanging in the sky. After battling angels and a flying centipede/dragon creature, the protagonists leap across chunks of falling debris to another large piece, where a double-headed dragon sweeps into view and spins its body, lashing its wings at the fighters. It then belches up twin fireballs at our heroines, before landing on the falling stone structure, its talons the size of a large car. The whole sequence is nothing short of spectacular. Of course, whether this particular section is playable, in amongst the insanity, remains to be seen, but as an opening it's undeniably bold, and as long as these kinds of cinematic excesses are balanced by more grounded sections - which we have every confidence they will be, Bayonetta is going to be one of the best action games of 2009.

You missed out this part from IGN:

As mentioned, this is a wildly inventive action game. Bayonetta is hugely versatile, with weapons secreted about her entire body - she has two guns strapped to her boots, but can also dual wield in her hands, or switch to a sword. Lightning fast melee attacks chain into weapon attacks, which chain into hair attacks. Yes, hair attacks. As you've probably heard, Bayonetta utilises her long black locks as a weapon. Numerous combos end with portals opening in the air, through which huge demonic fists or boots wreathed in hair punch or stomp through. The hair really comes into its own during the boss battles too. At the end of the first stage we were shown (which was a more polished version of the stage demoed at last year's E3), the hulking, cherub-faced boss is devoured in the gaping maw of a massive dragon, constructed entirely of shimmering, swirling strands of black hair.

All of which brings us to the aforementioned nakedness. Bayonetta's very outfit, you see, is composed of hair, so when she's using a lot of it to attack, it leeches off her body, leaving her almost completely bare. We're still undecided whether this is the stupidest thing we've ever seen, or the coolest. Probably somewhere in between. The game certainly doesn't shy away from her sexuality - the enemy she's currently targeting, for instance, is highlighted with a pair of bright red lips on its chest.

Conclusion: Use more (hair), see more (of the body). Lol

FYI: The team (or parts of it) also previously worked on DMC, Resident Evil, and Okami previously

another report for BAYONETTA

QUOTE
Here's another new preview (although its in spanish):

http://www.viciojuegos.com/avance/Bayonett...etta/2286/30755

New things said:

-they hint at a taunt button;
-a man with sunglasses (Luka, maybe);
-against the Seraphim boss, the SEGA rep took three attempts to defeat him (lol);
-"epic music" plays during the Vestibule stage;
-when Bayonetta gets injured, her blood forms rose petals, and when she dies she evaporates into rose petals that turn into butterflies and fly away (description was rough, probably not exactly like that);
-when low on health, purple borders form around the screen to warn you that you are about to die;
-the game will use CG cutscenes for specific story portions, there will be ones done in the in-game engine as well;
-the music is fantastic, and the music is described as jazzy during scenes of dialouge, while battles have j-pop music (with a female vocal singer), while others have epic songs (orchestral, most likely);
-the game will have a high difficulty, but still be kind to the casual players, as you could get through the game on "easy" just using the punch and kick buttons, but will please the hardcore/creative players with use of special attacks, combos, and technical fighting mechanics;
-there will be no difference between the PS3 and 360 versions;
-the editor said that he was not impressed by the TGS trailer, but was truly amazed by this demo, and he says for the public not to rely on images or trailers, as the game must truly be played to be believed.

[Rough Stuff I'm not too sure of]
-when enemies are introduced, their artwork and name are shown, a la Okami's enemies

some new preview

She got legs and she knows hot to use 'em...

How much is too much? That’s the question that Bayonetta raises at every turn. And just when you think you’ve witnessed its extremities, it pushes that little bit further. From the objectification of the eponymous witch herself to the searing pace at which the action runs, this is a game that tests your limits in every sense and it’s already dividing opinions as a result. It’s almost as though Platinum Games is as eager to challenge and offend as it is to excite.

The routine slaughter of angelic enemies, the sexually charged cinematics, the dialogue and mechanics, and the seizure-inducing showdowns all conspire to make this a videogame you really wouldn’t want your mother to catch you playing. It’s guilty-pleasure gaming taken to the extreme and it honestly wouldn’t work any other way.

To suggest Bayonetta is ‘a bit like Devil May Cry’ isn’t strictly accurate: the similarities are such that Bayonetta could almost be a Devil May Cry game. The HUD, the style-based scoring system and the mix of melee and ranged combat all take their cues from the superb Capcom series and even the attitude comes across as the female equivalent of Dante’s machismo. But if you thought the intro to Dante’s Awakening was a little over-the-top, Bayonetta might just push you over the edge.

As if having a gun attached to each limb wasn’t weird enough, special moves will send the witch into a swirling flurry of arms, legs, and bullets, and the more impressive combos make use of her plentiful hair to call forth mighty summons. The downside – for her, at least – is that her entire outfit is just a wildly impractical haircut, meaning that the more powerful the conjuring trick, the more naked she becomes. A swirling swathe of tresses usually protects her dignity during such lavish sequences, but who’s to say where Platinum Games will draw the line when it comes to Bayonetta’s ultimate techniques.

And the lunacy of the action doesn’t stop there: ‘torture moves’ triggered by certain combos tend to execute your opponent on the spot. How you do so is determined by both weapons equipped and relative position, so there’ll be plenty to see in the final game. You can even grab the weapons of downed foes to unleash special attacks, many of which seem to be powerful, single-use bursts useful for crowd control.

And just in case the frantic combat doesn’t give you enough of an ocular workout, the lush backgrounds often have their own agenda and activity – one section takes place on a plummeting clock tower, for example, and there’s always a hell of a lot going on. This, coupled with the breakneck speed of the combat, demands your attention at all times. We’ve heard that it’s supposed to be easier than the Devil May Cry franchise at its most ferocious, but chaining attacks is rewarding and thrilling all the same.

The sound is definitely worth a mention. While Dante slays his enemies to the sound of a wrestler’s iPod, Bayonetta throws yet another curveball and opts instead for a jazz-cum-J-pop soundtrack. It fits the chaotic action wonderfully and gives proceedings a unique twist that distances things from the myriad other action games out there. Bayonetta is a beautifully presented game in every respect, provided your eyes can keep up.

The combat is coming along nicely and the game has established a certain sense of style – even if it is a little divisive – so it’s really just a question of whether Bayonetta has enough variety to go round. There will be plenty of new weapons to equip to each limb, and we’ve already borne witness to an assortment of enemies and environments in the few levels that we’ve seen so far, so we’re anxiously awaiting our chance to sit down and really get to know Bayonetta.

Final Summary
With blades on her fingers and guns on her toes, she will have slaughter wherever she goes.

Greater Demon Beast:
A high level skill using an ancient incantation which consumes a large quantity of magic power to borrow the power of the demons who inhabit the demon realm and deal a high amount of damage to the enemy. It is a dangerous skill in which any one thing which goes wrong could cause the consumption of the user instead. Correctly summoned and it will probably not leave even one living Angel in front of you.

Weapon Stealing:
Bayonetta makes use of a diverse range of weapons. As well, the Angels also attack with various kinds of weapons; however, Bayonetta can even steal these weapons and make use of them herself. Details are unknown at this point, but it seems the Angels you defeat drop their weapons which you can then pick up for your own use. It seems there are even fairly large weapons however...

Summoning:
Controlling the Demons which reside in your own hair; the secret technique of a witch. Using her own hair as a medium, Bayonetta summons forth to this world the residents of the demon realm with whom she has made a contract. The displayed attack is called Madame Butterfly which uses giant arms and legs to strike in a skillful martial arts style. This skill promises to deliver absolute death.

Torture:
At the time of the witch hunts many centuries ago, there were many torture tools which took many lives. In order to avenge her comrades, Bayonetta summons these from the darkness to torture the Angels. In other words, the Angels are felled into hell, by the hands of the torture devices which are soaked in the malice of witches, to continue tasting eternal suffering.

When a game is described as having the artistic direction that Devil May Cry’s sequels should have chosen, you tend to sit up and listen. Heck, if success was based upon the number of guns wielded alone, Bayonetta would surely straddle the charts as easily as its eponymous heroine does her hapless enemies. You see, one firearm isn’t enough for this reincarnated witch, and two’s only slightly better. No, to keep the target in sight at all times, four weapons are naturally required, tethered to each of her hands and feet and fired in an acrobatic fashion resembling helicopters in distress. Don’t ask how she pulls a trigger with her pinkies, just go with it. Anyway, with such reckless disregard for sanity in base-level combat, things can only escalate. And, this being a game starring a lead character skilled in magic, marksmanship, acrobatics and making petals breeze around herself in a slightly intimidating way, you can be sure that’s what will happen, which is why we begin with some of the most epic and unusual boss fights since Rez.

Sure, the average gamer might be wowed by a well-placed bolt of lightning shooting through some admittedly beautiful stained glass, but this aims for a higher plane entirely. How’s battling stone golems along a 2.5D bridge while the monster grasps your platform in its icy fingers, swinging you about? If that doesn’t float your boat, how’s hurtling down a mountainside on the ruins of a gothic clock tower, doing battle with evil angels as stone serpents blot out the twinkling skyline? If that fails, there’s always the baseline: massive gargoyles with axes the size of your average cul-de-sac. Sure, a concession is made to socalled ‘regular’ games via the massive red spot on its back to point out a weak spot, say, away from all that armour, but things are joyously outlandish from there. We’re talking about a lead character who turns into a butterfly when she leaps, gazelle-like, into the air. Yeah, now you’re feeling scared. The in-game currency is even loosely retitled ‘haloes’, which have clearly been stolen in some sort of elaborate heist from whatever blinged-up mansion Sonic the Hedgehog’s living in now.
Even fisticuffs against regular grunts are littered with more special moves than all the Street Fighter games combined. Landing blows while remaining unscathed allows Bayonetta to unleash an array of comical finishers, most of which have something to do with hair that’s also a one-piece bodice. From giant arms and legs that remind us of what swarms of bees used to do when disturbed in Tom And Jerry cartoons to something a little extra special. Normally formed to devour some of the more persistent boss characters, a giant dragon’s head can appear to munch merrily on whatever our conjurer wants it to. And this is all accompanied by a shame-saving yet cheeky camera angle as she gets naked, of course. What do you mean ‘where do all the entrails go when she re-forms herself?’ You’re too hung up on the details, man.

So, what we’re basically left with is a videogame totally unashamed of embracing all that one could be, without cinematic pretence or a story that would leave Stephen Hawking a little confused. Its loading screens stand proud and unapologetic, offering an EA Sports Arena-style chance to rattle off a few combos before the real action begins, which you’ll naturally grab with both hands. Put simply, its concentration on making the act of duffing things up in as insane a way as possible leaves nothing but a huge smile on your face. And who doesn’t want that?

Well E3 is coming, and there's a good chance that Bayonetta will be playable there; but as of now there have only been eyes-on sessions with critics watching. But for those who are just jumping in or want to know what the hype is all about but want opinions outside of the forums themselves, I leave these quotes from various previews of Bayonetta.

NOTE: These previews are reactions to only two levels of Bayonetta: The Vestibule (aka Falling Clock Tower) and Big Little City - The Entrance to the City (aka the most boring part of the game).
From nowgamer.com:

"Bayonetta is so extreme in every aspect, from its outlandish special moves to its psychedelic visuals and J-Pop/Jazz soundtrack, that the Platinum team must have developed the game with very ironic grins on their faces. It’s precisely this unbridled playfulness that makes the game so refreshing to behold. In an industry where so many titles get focus tested to oblivion, Platinum has bucked the trend, stuck to its vision and made an uncompromising experience."

"We’re actually looking forward to Bayonetta more than God Of War III..."

"How much is too much? That’s the question that Bayonetta raises at every turn. And just when you think you’ve witnessed its extremities, it pushes that little bit further. From the objectification of the eponymous witch herself to the searing pace at which the action runs, this is a game that tests your limits in every sense and it’s already dividing opinions as a result. It’s almost as though Platinum Games is as eager to challenge and offend as it is to excite."

"The routine slaughter of angelic enemies, the sexually charged cinematics, the dialogue and mechanics, and the seizure-inducing showdowns all conspire to make this a videogame you really wouldn’t want your mother to catch you playing. It’s guilty-pleasure gaming taken to the extreme and it honestly wouldn’t work any other way."

"The sound is definitely worth a mention ... Bayonetta throws yet another curveball and opts instead for a jazz-J-pop soundtrack. It fits the chaotic action wonderfully and gives proceedings a unique twist that distances things from the myriad other action games out there."

"Bayonetta is a beautifully presented game in every respect, provided your eyes can keep up."
from nzgamer.com:

"Another boundary-pushing exercise in style."

"The fights have an amazing high-speed complexity, integrating shooting, spinning, striking and casting with an intuitive control system."

"The bosses stretch the limits of inventiveness and imagination, and the battles are lightning fast and fluid."

"Platinum Games are again looking to push the boundaries of gaming"

from videogamer.com:

"Hideki Kamiya is claiming that he's going to set new standards for action gaming, and it's clear that grand spectacle is going to play a large role in this attempt."

"It looked utterly chaotic and a little bit mad, and yet achingly stylish. Indeed, the same could be said for the game as a whole."

"The visual style, for one thing, is immediately striking - with levels and enemies that recall Ancient Greece spliced with contemporary Japanese cool. It's super-slick too, running at what appeared to be a butter-smooth 60 frames per second."

here's the thing that happened on the new trailer

-Bayonetta drops F-bombs

-the right shoulder button dodges, by dodging at the last minute, Witch Time is triggered; this activates the purple world that can be seen in the newest trailer.

-you can practice combos during the loading screens; combos are listed on the side of the screen for the weapon you have equipped, and the amount of times you used those combos is listed as well. Loading times do not take long though, but you can opt to stay on the screen longer to practice by pressing a button.

-if you hold down an attack button in the middle of a combo, you'll cancel out the sequence with a flurry of attacks from your chosen limb. If you complete a combo and wait half a beat before tapping a button, you'll execute a deadly hair-fist or hair-boot attack.

-when you pick up an enemies' weapon, you have the option of using two different attacks, which drain the weapons' stamina until it breaks; or you can opt to use the whole stamina bar for a flashy special attack.

-Bayonetta can use her hair fists to lift up cars and throw them at enemies

-Bayonetta can reverse gravity and run up a wall and shift the camera to have that area as the new plane. (This can be seen in the new trailer)

-Kamiya-san predicts a playtime of around 12 hours. But "You'll be shocked at how much content is in there" says Kamiya-san.

-Each chapter of Bayonetta is broken up into 10 verses, with each being roughly two minutes in length. Some verses consist of a series of enemy encounters, a single boss fight, or a mad dash through a crumbling area. Some even allow you to explore, where you can break the surrounding to get items, or simply move on. At the end of each verse, you'll be scored based on how well you fought and how much health you have left, and you'll recieve medals for your score. At the end of the chapter you're medals are tallied and you recieve a statue.

-There are hidden verses within the set ones, these are discovered in many ways. (Think of them as the "secret" levels in the old Mario Bros. games)

-Some verses roll directly into eachother, linked by event scenes that sometimes have QTEs (also seen in the new trailer).

-QTEs appear in event scenes, certain boss fights, and in the "climax moves" used to finish each boss fight.

-Kamiya-san's goal is to create a gameplay experience so deep that it will be impossible to experience everything in one playthrough

-Achievments and Trophies will be linked to the game engine in an interesting way.

-Also, Kamiya-san noted: "Don't think of it as 'There's no DLC for the game,' but more like 'All the DLC is already in the box.'"

"The second level of the demo is when my entire face was blown off by maximum awesome.

As was indicated in the recent "Climax" trailer, Bayonetta fights a horde of frightening angels... on top of a giant clock tower... as it's falling... and being attacked by dragons. This is an actual, playable stage and it puts all other action games to shame. As the crumbling clock tower plummets downwards besides a seemingly endless cliff, Bayonetta and countless angels duel in an incredibly awesome battle. The camera swoops around to highlight the action, huge rocks rip through the scene and the aforementioned two-headed dragon is there too.

Everything about this section is jaw-dropping. The sweeping music, the breath-taking visuals and the insane camera work -- it all comes together to form a remarkable experience. I can't wait to play this game."

Great action game as DMC but I sucks at this type of real time action game. I'm more into those strategy and adventure game such as turn-based game and exploration game where you don't need to worry about the time limit and how well you perform. The idea to get Gold or S (some even SSS) rank after each act seems to affect my game play. I get nervous while playing when thinking about the rank I'll get. Guess it's just me.

Bayonetta (PS3)
Also On: 360

Release Date: 2009
ESRB Rating: Rating Pending
Genre: Action
Publisher: Sega
Developer: Platinum Games

The 1UP Network previews games with the philosophy that people want to hear our honest opinions on titles before they are released. If a game looks really promising, we'll pass on our excitement. But if a game needs work, we'll let you know. Here are our Bayonetta PS3 previews.
Previews
We've got the first ever hands-on preview of the next big action game from the director of Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami.

By Matt Leone 06/01/2009

Back in April, Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya got linked on various news blogs when he said he wanted to make a "sadistically hard" game. I'm guessing it made headlines because the Internet loves the word sadistic -- and for the record, we wrote the story too -- but in context Kamiya's point was that he doesn't want to mislead potential players.
"We would hate for someone to think it is a heartwarming tale and then buy the game to discover it is really a sadistically hard game (I hope...) where you play as a witch who laughs as she destroys angelic enemies," was the quote.

Which is ironic, because that quote generated a lot of message board discussion speculating that Bayonetta would be too difficult for casual players. And that's not true at all -- dig deeper and you'll find that Kamiya has made similar quotes on the opposite end of the spectrum, claiming that he wants to make the game easy enough that his mom can play it.

So when I sat down with the Bayonetta E3 demo, and came across only Very Easy, Easy, and Normal difficulty settings, it felt like the developers were trying to prove a point. Maybe not. I don't want to put words in their mouths. But I was surprised to see nothing more challenging in the list. And I was more surprised to see the word "automatic" sitting below Very Easy and Easy -- meaning those settings give you training wheels that finish certain combos for you.

Point being, don't read too much into out of context quotes, and the developers plan for Bayonetta to be as inclusive as it is hardcore (I confirmed later that there will be two additional difficulty settings in the final game, including "Climax Hard"). Unless you mean hardcore in the clothes falling off as you attack, taunt button that says "You want to touch me?" way, in which case there's no mistaking Kamiya's motives.

First Climax

Yes, Bayonetta is a single-player game with a taunt button -- you can command Bayonetta (the character) to speak to enemies as you're fighting. According to producer Yusuke Hashimoto, this isn't just a random inclusion for players to show off with, and it will affect the gameplay in some scenarios, but in my time with the game I didn't discover any examples of how that will work.

What I did see was a three part demo titled "First Climax" -- starting with the courtyard scene that has been featured in most of the game's screenshots to date, then continuing to a boss battle where you fight a giant on the side of a mountain that was first shown at Tokyo Game Show last year, and finishing with a new scene pitting Bayonetta against the human-sized Dante-to-your Nero character Jeanne in a one-on-one fight where you can both run on the walls in what looks like a cathedral.

en seconds in, the game feels like many of its competitors: jumping feels quick and slightly floaty like in Devil May Cry, and standard combos are fast and easy to cancel out of like in Ninja Gaiden.

Many of the action game standards show up: you can double jump, lock onto enemies, rotate the camera, backflip to avoid attacks, swap between weapons on the fly, break apart background objects (to collect golden halos that look like the rings from a Sonic the Hedgehog game), and break through doors by attacking repeatedly.

But at about 30 seconds, the game starts living up to those "climax action" promises the developers have been talking about for the past year. The first thing I noticed was that, at the end of a normal combo, you can hold down the final button in the string to continuously fire gunshots -- which looks incredibly cool when you kick someone and then keep your leg pointed at their face as your foot pours bullets on it.

If that's too subtle for you, there's Witch Time, Bayonetta's spin on a parry system where if you perform a backflip at the exact right moment, the screen will turn blue and enemies will slow to a halt for a few seconds, allowing you to pile on attacks without fear of getting hit. Because of the risk/reward with the timing, there's no limit to how much you can use Witch Time, but you have to earn it each time, which makes it more satisfying than a traditional flip-a-switch bullet time mode.

And if even that's too subtle, you may prefer the Torture Attacks (which let you generate objects like a guillotine after building up a meter below your health bar), or certain combos that finish with screen-filling attacks such as a giant stiletto heel made from your hair, or fighting game-style special moves such as rotating the analog stick 360 degrees like you're performing Zangief's spinning piledriver to fire quick shots in a circle around you.

It ties together extremely well, moves beautifully, and is as responsive as I've seen an action game. One moment you'll be walking slowly, firing your guns at the environment to destroy park benches and flower pots, and another you'll be mixing together everything mentioned in the previous four paragraphs while trying to stay alive.

My only concern with the combat at this point is that things seem hard to keep track of in areas where the number of enemies ramps up -- unfortunately, areas I didn't get to play for this story. I remember watching the clock tower scene from TGS last year and losing track of Bayonetta multiple times because of how much debris was on the screen -- giving me Space Giraffe flashbacks -- and the developers keep dropping hints that the game gets even more over-the-top than that. But given how well the game handles smaller groups of enemies, I'm hopeful it'll have a few tricks to allow players to keep up with what's going on when the level designs go over the top.

The Aftermath

One of those tricks looks like it could be the recently revealed panther transformation that allows Bayonetta to run around on all fours and jump higher than normal. Another might be the whip that gives her a long range weapon along the lines of the chained blades in God of War.

And then there's the feature I'm not sure if is really in the game: a motorcycle. About a month ago, I randomly asked Hashimoto if Bayonetta would be able to ride a motorcycle in the game, and he said: "Not at all. There are no vehicles like that in the game. Early in the design stage, we'd talked about having her ride different vehicles, including motorcycles, actually. But later on, we decided not to include anything like that. One of the goals of the design was to include these massive, over-the-top finishing moves, and we felt that an environment where she could ride around in vehicles would take away from that focus."

But then in a trailer that leaked online about a week ago, Bayonetta showed up riding a hog in what clearly looked like an in-game sequence. I asked Platinum about the discrepancy and have yet to hear back, but it seems possible that because the trailer wasn't officially released, that footage was from back when the game was early in development.

Regardless, it's clear Bayonetta has plenty of variety, and that -- combined with the combat system -- is what makes me more excited for the game than almost everything else I've seen in recent months. Unless something goes terribly wrong, I'll be amazed if Bayonetta doesn't end up being one of the best action games this year.

E3 2009 Preview

The hack-n-slash action genre has two leaders: Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. These games are so good that most people don’t even realize that they are playing a hack-n-slash game. This fall, Sega and Platinum Games (the studio from Shinji Mikami, Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya; Kamiya was the director of the original DMC) will release a game that could dethrone those two classics: Bayonetta.

How is this possible? How could this game pull it off when so many have attempted DMC-crushing greatness only to fall flat on their faces? The answer lies within Bayonetta’s speed, size and overall craziness. Every character has a weird or quirky edge. Monsters aren’t limited to the grotesque beasts of Ninja Gaiden, but like that game and DMC, you can expect to see plenty of building-sized enemies that will literally tear up the environment. This might not be too impressive – or even worth mentioning – had the graphics mirrored the games it’s trying to one-up. But while the camera angles and world structure is very familiar, the animations and art designs belong entirely to Bayonetta.
But while you could marvel at the visuals for hours, the gameplay is what really carries this game to greatness. First of all, Bayonetta may very well be the most seamless action game ever made. The controls are just perfect; she can double-jump as intuitively as Mario, unleash combos as effectively as Dante, and evade attacks more skillfully than anyone from The Matrix trilogy.

Speaking of skills, Bayonetta’s evasion move allows her to get the upper hand over her enemies in a very cool way. If you tap the left trigger at just the right moment, it’ll create a slow-motion effect called Witch Time. During this, players can attack without having to worry about retaliation. Yes, other games have tried similar moves, but it’s the way Bayonetta implements this feature that makes it so great. Within seconds of picking up the controller, everything felt very natural.

As all of this was going on, the camera never failed. The frame rate never dropped, the graphics never lost their beauty… It was almost hard to believe this game was designed for the current generation. And it only gets better with time: as you progress through the game, enormous boss creatures/monsters will attack. Some will literally tear up the environment.

Not surprisingly, our lead heroine (who shares the game’s title) carries multiple guns and offers an abundance of weapons-based on hand-to-hand attacks. Many of them can be linked and turned into combos, which is definitely an experience DMC fans are used to. The attacks themselves, however, are both exquisite and jaw-dropping. You’ve probably never seen a giant high heel-wearing foot slam down on an enemy before. But you will in Bayonetta.

Due in the fourth quarter, Bayonetta is a stunning mix of intense combat and breathtaking graphics. The original (and often unusual) character designs make the game that much more interesting. Look for this one to become a classic before the end of the year.

Added on June 3, 2009, 1:31 pmIt still surprises me, the way Sega has, right under my nose, become a rather heavy hitting publisher in this business of making and selling videogames. It was almost exactly ten years ago that we saw their last console sold on store shelves (9/9/99 the useless things we remember). In any case, so it is, and as a publisher, they are here at E3 with a few games to show off. And being that I am here as well, and that Im here to write about things, I decided to tell you a little bit about my brief hour at their towering booth, starting with Bayonetta.

For those that dont know, this is the latest title from the Devil May Cry creator, Hideki Kamiya, and is being developed by Platinum Games. It seems Kamiya is quite pleased with the formula he helped establish, because this game just feels like a cousin, sibling, adopted relative of some sort that isnt an offspring, or some form of a relation more significant than a crossing on the sidewalk. If youve played a Devil May Cry game, you can, as I did, comfortably skip the tutorial and start mashing your way to an understanding of the game. For those not too familiar with these games, its a massively stylish type of fast-paced third person action game involving not only killing your enemies, but executing ornately violent combos of varying degrees of pain and damage-dealing. That the two play similar should come as no shock to anyone who has seen any iota of gameplay footage. The real question on my mind when I grabbed the controller was whether or not this glimpse will tell me that were in for a nice spicy rejuvenation to a genre that is rife with sequels that are beginning to feel stale. The answer to my question after facing a barrage of demons and one oafish giant with a sickle the size of him possibly.

Where Devil May Crys Dante used a sword and guns, Bayonetta uses a sword, guns, punches, kicks (her high heels are gun barrels), and hair. Im not so sure this is a standup idea of innovation, but it is interesting and entertaining at the very least. Since she has more moves at her disposal, that means that more combos are possible to do. To me, this would normally be a red flag. In these games, I typically resign myself to a choice two or three combos that tend to be effective in dealing with most situations. However, two things eased my worries. First: these combos come out fast and seem to be equally effective. While this sounds like it would bland things out, it motivated me to actually take more chances and get creative with what I was doing. Second: This game is Fast Paced. Before you know it, youve taken out a good five enemies and a fresh set of five more are on you. Rather than be overwhelming, it really only left me feeling like I had more opportunity to try out more combinations to make Bayonetta look as cool as possible. One red flag that did come up, though, is that this could quickly turn the game into a mash fest of epic proportions. I can only imagine the difficulty ramps up and calls for more precision, and hopefully higher difficulty doesnt kill the free-flowing fun I felt in this initial level.

On top of combos are little finisher moves. The word Torture comes up on screen, and a chance to press Y and B (360 controller) simultaneously arises, and some elaborate torture device like a guillotine or iron maiden forms from the ether to deliver a vicious kill. At the end of the boss battle, the text read Climax and pushing the same two buttons turned Bayonettas hair into a dragon that gorily devoured the giant I just took on.

So yeah, it was a fun time. Hopefully the full game can maintain a steady pace of this much fun

sadly I was never any kind of combo master. Not creative enough lol. i just wanted to kill the enemy asap! biggrin.gif
maybe i'll learn with Bayonetta? Fingers crossed.

Nice article danger-san, sounds like it'll be great.
I particularly like the finishing move thang! Would be rather GOW-ish like, but that's not necessarily a bad thing!
I do wonder about the difficulty though?

DMC always amazed me with the combos where Ninja Gaiden and GOW fail to.
This upcoming Bayonetta seems to have a lot of combo in show! And weapon swapping change the style of her combo just like wat Dante was capable to do in DMC4. I am very looking forward on it!

We've unearthed some new information about everyone's favorite nearly-nude witch fighting action game. Here's the bullet point details in brief for you:

-Will feature five different difficulties; Platinum Games developer was playing on Easy.

-Normal mode is for the action gamer. But he wants every type of gamers to be able to experience it. There is also a Very Easy mode.

-The AI isn't necessarily easier on the easy modes; the biggest difference is that it feels completely different to handle the game.

-The AI is the same strength, but the level of damage and impact to health bar is different, and you will be able to do many more finishing moves which are normally part of complex combos in the harder difficulties.

-Halos allow you to purchase weapons and use finishing moves.

-When asked about whether other costumes will be available for unlocking, the answer was simply, "You might find something in the game as you play along."

-We'll have more on Bayonetta very soon (later today).

The Weapon of Bayonetta

Hi, everyone. I’m Muneyuki “Johnny” Kotegawa, and I am in charge of the design and modeling for all of the weapons in Bayonetta.

I was also involved in designing the weapons for Devil May Cry and Resident Evil. This is my first project with Kamiya-san since Devil May Cry.

I wanted to blog about Scarborough Fair, Bayonetta’s beloved handguns that you may have seen in our trailers and other advertisements.

First I want to cover how we approached design in general, not just limited to weapons. Kamiya-san’s direction for the character was pretty much;

1. A female lead character
2. A modern witch
3. Guns on hands and feet

I think that Shimako covered this in an earlier blog.

After going through an intense bit of back and forth between Shimako and Kamiya-san (I sit between them…) they came up with a color balance based around pitch-black clothing, white skin, gold ornamentations, and the red ribbon accent. It was then that it was decided that the guns in her hand should be red. While there is an element of color balancing to it, this game has intense action that hasn’t really been seen up until this point in gaming, so having the red guns makes it easier to pick up the position of Bayonetta’s limbs in combat. By the way, her gloves (palms), and soles are also red.

We also had to make this easy to pick up on because Bayonetta uses her guns in her primary for of attacking – via melee.

With all this in mind, I went to work to come up with some weapon designs based on real world guns. I do this because if I base something on gun parts that are familiar, it will remain convincing even if the final product is a complete work of the imagination. Movie prop guns like the blaster in Blade Runner, or Han Solo’s gun in Star Wars are examples of this style of design.

user posted image

I suppose gun-lovers will be able to figure out which gun is based on what real world weapon. The strange base guns are the traces of trial and error included because I wanted to make something that no one had ever seen before. You could also say they reflect my personal taste as well.

The guns that aren’t red were actually created before we had locked down the final design specifications. I made them silver or gold to make sure they stood out to the eye.

After working on the various designs, Kamiya-san’s eyes stopped at a gun based on the Derringer. It must have been because great minds think alike, and he could see it would be a gun capable of rapid fire; a simple, rugged gun. Or so I thought. “This design would look hot in a girl’s hand.” Hmph.

user posted image

1. The first image sees the design taking into account the gun’s use as a melee weapon, as well as making it giant to fit in with the action game requirements we talked about earlier. I also made the small parts gold to impart some elegance. The part underneath the grip is formed and inspired by a high-heel.

2. The second image is even more of a melee weapon, adding some spikes and other ornamentation, as well as a jewel on the side. This was all to give the gun an overall accent.

3. I was told to make the gun less spikey, so redesigned with something a bit more subdued, while thinking of the design elements once again. This is also where I added the final logo for Scarborough Fair.

4. Since the gun will be used for melee attacks, I wanted to add something akin to a knuckle guard onto the gun. I also shrunk things down to make the entire gun seem stronger.

5. I felt I may have gone too far, so I went back to some previous elements. The high-heel silhouette that was removed in design #4 makes a comeback.

6. Here we move even closer back towards the original Derringer silhouette. I added a rail onto the top of the guns so that they could be equipped on Bayonetta’s feet. They slide into the gap in her high heels. The knuckle guard is meant to remind you of an old pair of scissors, an idea that came from Kamiya-san. This is the design I used to make the final guns.

user posted image

As a little addition, if you put two of the guns together, they will form the Witch’s mark. I used this design to begin production on the CG model.

But even then, I kept toying with the design as I created the model, doing retakes as I added ideas or the use of the weapon changed.

user posted image

Scarborough Fair is an old English ballad that focuses on four herbs – Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme. These herbs became the names of each individual gun. Witches and herbs are closely linked. (This even comes up a bit in the game’s story.) I also changed the color of the gem on each of the gun to match the flower of the herb, which Bayonetta then uses to summon/expel the bullets that allow her to fire limitless rounds of ammo. (You can’t really see it, but there is a bullet in the gem.) Underneath the grip, we also added a charm (designed by Shimako) that is also linked with the herbs.

The gun can also be opened at the breach to be loaded with different bullets and fired single-shot. You’ll just have to look forward to the game to figure out how we use this…

So that pretty much sums up how we went about the design and creation of Scarborough Fair. It took a long time to arrive at Bayonetta’s main weapon, but once we had that clear direction, the rest of the weapons were a smooth design process. The first time is always the hardest, right?

And of course, as you have seen in the trailers, this isn’t the only weapon that Bayonetta will wield. You can look forward to playing with weapons that range from the standard to the absolutely outrageous.

Next time I blog, I will give you a look into the design of some of the other weapons, as well as the guns used by the mysterious woman in red, Jeanne.

This game better not be short.
10-12 hours length first time through should be the least.

Too many action games now a days only lasts a mere 8 hours.

I'm not as hyped, simply because I still can't find something which really makes me want to play this game no matter what.

On a side note, 360 is the lead platform for Bayonetta.

Hi danger,

Nice to see someone make an effort about keeping us updated on this next gen mosnter slaying princess. Im as hyped as you are about the game. Mainly due to :

1)This is the birthchild of the creator of Devil may cry series (Excluding DMC2 cuz that was made by a separate company, which was why it sucked). Bayonetta was announced immediately after the developer was quoted saying "this game (bayonetta) will beat even what DMC4 could give". I love dmc games and this sentence caught my attention. I wanna see how the words can come true.

2)After watching the E3 09 vids and the latest gameplay vids from SDCC 09, (Comic con recently passed), i gotta say im hooked on what the game has to offer. I have neevr played a game where you run on a platform and you get to see the bos climb up to your platform from the abckground. He then attacks you,and throws the platform with u on it,to another place of the map. Its just the best action game i've seen so far.

3)Bayonetta loses more and more of her clothes as she strings more combos.'Nuff said? tongue.gif

So anyways,danger46, PLEASE keep up with the great job so far.

Sega: Yes, Bayonetta Will Be Region Locked

When Sega of America opted for a January 2010 release date for Bayonetta—which hits Japan end-of-October—we thought "Oh, we'll just import then." According to Sega reps at Gamescom, that doesn't sound like much of an option anymore.

At our Bayonetta hands-off demo, we asked the Sega of Europe folks if the PlatinumGames developed action title would be region locked, just in case we wanted to play the game this October instead of next year. Unsurprisingly, we were told that the Japanese version would not be region free, meaning that North American and European consoles won't play import copies. The reason? It would impact sales of the game outside of Japan, we were told.

That's not that uncommon for Japanese Xbox 360 releases. The vast majority of games released in Japan for Microsoft's box won't play on anything but Japanese consoles. But the PlayStation 3 version? The games are almost all (thankfully) region-free. Locking down that version would be an unusual move on Sega's part.

And even if it is region-free on the PS3, the fact that we've yet to see Bayonetta running on that platform at any event we've been to is a sign that, well, we should wait to see it running on that platform before dropping import dollars on it.

We attempted to get triple confirmation from Sega of America on that info provided by their European counterparts, but reps did not respond to multiple e-mail requests.

Come to think of it.... yes, every single press material since day 1 has only been on the 360 version.
Wheres the PS3? unsure.gif

Added on September 2, 2009, 12:15 pmAs I expected, things aren't looking good for Bayonetta:

QUOTE
Over the weekend, Sega invited Japanese gamers to A.I. Tokyo -- a velvety underground bar in the party capital of Tokyo, Roppongi -- for an event called "Feel Bayonetta," where we were able to manage 15 minutes with Bayonetta on PS3, and discovered news about a demo for the game.

Prior to this event, Sega and Platinum Games had only shown the game running on Xbox 360, and because the game was announced over a year ago, some players have been wondering about the PS3 version as a result. Unfortunately, this event didn't do much to help calm their fears.

While the 360 version on display looked crisp and smooth, the PS3 version was very blurry and the framerate was all over the place. During one portion of the demo, a crazy scene where you are jumping off of falling parts of a giant clock tower, it was often hard to keep track of the action because of the graphical issues on PS3.

Since Bayonetta's announcement, the developers have said that the game would look similar, if not identical, on both platforms. It seems interesting that Sega chose to show the PS3 version for the first time in this form, though this doesn't mean the finished game will run this way -- in fact, we'd assume that Platinum will be using the time before release to continue polishing it. We asked a Sega of Japan public relations representative about the differences between the two versions, and he said the two would be "the same," but he wasn't able to elaborate on specifics.

After playing the game, we sat through an interview session where producer Yusuke Hashimoto confirmed that a Bayonetta demo will be coming soon, and that it will be something that will be cool for people who eventually buy the game to go back to. We'll have to wait to see if he meant "soon" for the Japanese audience, or also for U.S. players, however, since the game is on track to ship in Japan in late October and the U.S. in January of next year

And they're games that comes out well long after its initial release on the 360.

Bayonetta is being developed simulataneously on both platforms. Although the 360 is clearly the lead platform.
WE still don't get to see any sort of comprehensive PS3 footage.

SEGA handled Bayonetta PS3 port, not Platinum Games

Bayonetta will make a PS3 and Xbox 360 playable appearance at this month's TGS, but Platinum Games explains why there might be differences between each versions.

Some gamers have been worried over how the performance of the PlayStation 3 version of Bayonetta would turn out, especially following a limited showing of the game and a negative report from 1up.com

The Xbox 360 version of Platinum Games' title had been the only build shown until GamesCom in Cologne, where the PS3 version demonstrated a slightly shaky framerate. However, the developer has been adamant that both titles would be nigh on identical by the time of their day and date release in the Spring of 2010.

The developer's president and CEO, Tatsuya Minami, has now approached the question of the game's multiplatform development before its appearance at this year's Tokyo Games Show.

"With Bayonetta, we created the Xbox 360 version of the game first, and then handed off all the data and other assets to SEGA so they could begin the process of porting Bayonetta to the PS3, giving them advice regarding the porting process along the way and overseeing the progress to ensure that the PS3 version would be the best it could be," Minami-san writes.

"The goal was to release the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions to gamers day and date, and even though there have been trials and tribulations along the way, we are incredibly pleased to be able to present two playable versions of the game on the Tokyo Game Show floor."

Minami-san then tries to calm the fears of PS3 gamers:

"As the developers of Bayonetta, we have overseen both versions, and I would like to make one thing clear. The Xbox 360 and PS3, as hardware platforms, both have their own distinct differences and peculiarities, and these characteristics will naturally give birth to differences in the final product.

"However, all involved endeavored to exploit the specific traits of each console to create an enjoyable experience. We feel the best way to evaluate this is by actually playing the game for yourself and coming to your own conclusions.

"Bringing Bayonetta to users of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is something we feel to be very important, and I feel passionately that we have fulfilled our responsibility in that regard."

SEGA has previously performed well on the PS3, with games including Valkyria Chronicles. We'll find out how good a job SEGA and Platinum Games did with the PS3 version of Bayonetta come its 2010 release.

http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/games/b/bay...036;1328214.htm

Honestly, things are looking more and more bleak for the PS3 version.
Handled by SEGA means a couple of different things. Who are the guys from SEGA that is handling the game?
Certainly not the ones familiar with the PS3 itself.

We'll know in a couple of days time.
I don't want to play this game if it is so much more inferior than the 360 version.

Which at this point however, sounds like it. Because it isn't funny not to show any official footage of the PS3 version until even near its release.
And if 1UP reports are true on those framerate drops, means deal breaker. No buy.

Anything can still change until the game is out on the streets though.

Keeping my hopes up.

"TOKYO - Bayonetta is a third-person action game that is best described as "flashy." The eponymous character is clad only in a catsuit made of her own hair and a pair of eyeglasses. As she punches, kicks, shoots and slashes the monsters around her, her hair transforms into larger and more outrageous implements of death, at the expense of her modesty.

Bayonetta is coming to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and I played both versions on the Tokyo Game Show floor. The Xbox version looks a little brighter and more colorful, especially during the cinematic finishing moves that punctuate the boss battles. This has the effect of making these moments more eye-popping and seamlessly blended with the actual in-game combat, while the PS3 version cut scenes feel like you're watching a movie through a sepia filter.

For a game with so much to look at, the camera in both versions is hard to handle. The default settings are not at all intuitive, but you can adjust them in the options menu. When Bayonetta runs too close to the edge of a scene, the camera can automatically focus on her and the wall instead of showing the enemies cornering her. Some of her larger hair-based attacks can also obscure the action.

For some reason, I was not allowed to play the tutorial, so I had to figure out Bayonetta's elaborate move set on the fly. The game offers a sort of "practice mode" during the loading scenes, but at least here at TGS the game loads too quickly for this to be useful. The good news is that the moves are easy to pick up and the more elaborate attacks feel very rewarding. Shoving a winged beastie into an iron maiden and slamming it shut won't get old anytime soon.

Bayonetta comes out October 29 in Japan and is slated for early 2010 in other countries

QUOTE
After initial reports out of Japan that the PlayStation 3 version of Bayonetta does not appear to be on the same technical level as the Xbox 360 version -- suffering from frame rate hiccups, for example -- and an explanation from developer Platinum Games that Sega actually ported Bayonetta to the PlayStation 3, I was curious to ask the development team about that process at Tokyo Game Show.
Unfortunately, I was not given that opportunity.

Just before my interview, I was informed the Bayonetta team would not be discussing the PlayStation 3 version of the game. At all.
The PlayStation 3 version should be on the show floor, however. I'll attempt to seek it out today and let you know how it stacks up.

So if the developer screw up their port of Bayonetta on PS3.... and most likely they will have poor sales on PS3 side when reviewer do the review....

aint tat a bigger lost than being an exclusive game? Since they waste more time on porting, they wasted more money on printing those BD disc and distributing them and end up no one want to grab them.

Multiplatform aint good if the case is like above

It isn't Platinum Games decision at all.
Who's publishing the game? Sega.

They're the one who has the last word.
JAP alone would cover most of the losses.

JAP peeps goes nuts when they hear anything associated with DMC. So go figure.

The Jap version is about to go gold anytime now.
Probably after TGS is over.

Roughly 2 months is a tight cut for some fixes on the english version. I don't think it'll be done either way.

IMHO since the game is originally made for xbox360, Sega is probably having some issue when porting to ps3 like coding difficulties and poor qa/qc monitoring for ps3 version.Hence, bad quality of PS3 version.

Sega should have make it exclusive for Xbox360 so they get the money frm M$ then later one year port it over to PS3. Then we can get something extra or at least a improve version Bayonetta like Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and others beta game on 360.
Stupid greedy Sega gonna fark themselves now.

Can't the staff from Yakuza and Valkyria Chronicles handle the port instead?

I know they're loaded with work for Yakuza 4 and VC2.... but if they're the ones who do it, I don't think we'll be having problems like this now.

graphic downgrade aint this enough..... u can see polygon and stuff making the character less nice and smooth like the PS3 version. The rest would be the resolution..... a game that can look nice on a 32" LCD TV and above are now squeeze into tiny screen......

then again maybe is the naming...... they place it VC2 so it make me uncomfortable since it also meant that PS3 wont have VC2.....

I think you're mistaken on something man...
Theres a reason why they made VC2 on the PSP and not the PS3.

The sole bloody reason is because of the ad-hoc capability of the PSP. In case you didn't know, in Japan right now, the PSP going online is as common as everyone using their own cellphone everyday. Clearly, they made it simply because they want to capitilize on the "multiplayer-anywhere" of the PSP.

Graphics isn't what they're aiming for in VC2, its multiplayer is what they're wanting to get. They made it for the jap peeps. So I don't want to make this sound offensive to you, its just too damn bad you aren't one em'.

If VC2 is a downgrade, then MGS: Peacewalker is also a downgrade because Kojima calls it a true MGS game unlike the previous MGS games before on the PSP. Then same goes for GoW: Chains of Olympus, also a downgrade simply because its a prequel?

yah guess the biggest reason is the naming for me VC2..... if they call it VC gaiden or something else like the GoW and MGS did i am ok with it. But the case here make me think tat we will not have a VC2 (a real sequel for the game) on the PS3 and if u dun buy the PSP version it feels like u miss a link in the main story.

I can describe the feeling like u have been playing all the MGS series on the console (those with numbering behind them),E.G.: MGS1, MGS2, then onwards suddenly they declare that MGS3 will onli be on a portable like NDS then after that you will get MGS4 back on the console.....something just feel missing. U get the feeling i am having?

But since all those MGS on the portable devices are like side story or spin off i felt ok.

I understand perfectly.
Because I thought myself VC2 should be on the PS3 instead. But when I look at it on the bigger scale, the design they're going for... then I accept it.

MGS: Peacewalker is the same thing. It is a true prequel to the series, not spin-off though. But again, when looking at how the developers want to go to the "multiplayer-anywhere" route, then I guess it is the best choice to bring onto the PSP.

Definitely, it'll be awesome on the PS3.... but for the design that they're going with, it doesn't nessasarily will fit onto a console. They would have to change and scrap alot of their innitial concepts and come out with a game different from what they want in the first place.

I understand your feeling as I've known exactly how it felt like. But regardless, look at the bigger scale. smile.gif

Here my hands-on impressions on the demo, and what would likely be the release of the game looks like as well.

To get things off my chest first, at times Bayonetta feels like cheap rip-off from DMC.
Yes, the director of this game is the creator of DMC so theres bound to be similarities. But it feels ironic that Hideki-san is ripping off its own creation....

Bayonetta on the PS3 is a bit of a mixed reaction.
But in a nutshell, the gameplay of Bayonetta is undoubtly very, good. Any DMC veterans will be able to pick this up and start jump-cancelling and buffering moves one after another.
If you look at it in another way, this is DMC4 done right. But again... at times, it feels like a cheap rip-off from DMC1 and DMC3.

The demo will average anywhere within 10-15 minutes, so it isn't too bad.
The enemies are dim-witted, just downright stupid. AI is really is really bad in this game, they'll just go for the same patter no matter what you do.

Perhaps it is the difficulty being Normal the highest you can set, maybe that is why the AI feels so stupid.
If according to previous games made by Hideki, the higher the difficulty the better the AI gets (and obviously of course the more damage they deal and less they receive).

As for the question being most talked about, is Bayonetta performing well on the PS3?
Barely. The game is v-locked at 60hz, and for whatever reason SEGA just didn't bring the game over properly. Frame-rate drops are HUGE in the game. It will drop to below sub-30fps even.
On a hindsight, the game doesn't look too particularly nice too. The music on the other hand, is superb. Voice acting is just... meh.

I don't expect much changes to final version of the game. PS3 gets the assload on this game....
The framerates dropping to sub-30fps just puts me off. I'd label the game as good, but far from great.

On a side note, the game supports upscaled 1080p.
But by playing in 1080p, the framerates drop are so damn bad it isn't even enjoyable anymore. You'd feel like you just want to mash buttons instead of playing stylishly with different combos chaining to one another.
So play in 720p, just to minimize the framerate drops as much as possible.

With frame rate problem.... then i would just have to skip this loh.... no point being frustrated.
360 one should logically perform better, but i dun owned one so cant play it. Pity....

I am wondering will the PS3 version outsell xbox360 version in JP.... this gonna be a really interesting fact.

Yeap, the biggest problem for this game on the PS3 is the frame-rate drops. I don't mind the less textures (right, do you really have the time to look at the backgrounds when you're suppose to be fighting your ass to be alive?), no AA support and just downright a little ugglier game than the 360.

But the frame-rate drops in this sort of fast paced pure action game, it really does kick you in the teeth. The demo is on normal difficulty and I actually had a little bit of problem with the enemies because I didn't dodge fast enough, no thanks to the sudden drop in the frame-rate.

I reckon the framerate drop is is somewhere between the 24fps mark. It wouldn't be bad if the framerates are locked at 30fps only and the developers would just ensure everything runs at that. But just think of it this way, you are fighting an enemy and the framerate is at 60fps, all of a sudden another enemy spawns and it drops to the 40fps mark then another enemy spawns and it drops down to the shitter.

The framerate goes up and down in about every freaking second. Just go figure how the framerate will be like if the harder difficulties has more enemies and later in the game you'd be surrounded by a dozen of them.

Interesting review. Still i'd like to give the demo a shot nod.gif
i'm not particularly knowledgeable in these technical kinda things, but is there anyway the frame rate can be fixed via update?
Or perhaps since it's still a ways from release, then it could definitely be fixed before then, right?

DMC wasn't that fantastic maybe. DMC3 for me, was and is still the best pure action game I've played.
We do have to acknowledge DMC though, it was because of this game that the (during then) almost dead pure action sub-genre was saved.

We wouldn't have GoW or NG if it wasn't for DMC.
So hats off to that.

guess the difficulty level wont be set too high.... becoz most western dude cant handle them well enough.... just like how most of them complain about the DMC series being hard..... and how ridiculous the difficulty in the NG series.
Remember last time the DMC3 incident..... lol cant finish the game becoz they said normal is too difficult and need to come out later with a DMC3SE which has some extra stuff along with difficulty tune down.

i am now truly sure that the PS3 version will outsell 360 version in JP....

Looking at the recent sale at JP since this game initial is plan for JP first....
DSi 57,000
PSP 55,000
PS3 37,000
Wii 32,000
DSL 6,600
PS2 2,800
360 2,600

source frm http://blog.livedoor.jp/htmk73/archives/346248.html

Hope there gonna fix up the bugs and frame problem for the PS3 version when they launch or else the game will be doom (the JP region one).

Japanese people didnt give a damn about framerate issues. If you see most of their rpgs, people already reach the moon in term of graphic but their still building an aeroplane.

I saw some guy in gamefaq saying that the demo is an old build from June and the frame rate issue might have IMPROVE in the final release? Anyone can confirm this??

The biggest issue here isn't the fact that the 360 version just has downright much better textures and more vibrant colors.
It is infact that the 360 version barely drops from its 60fps at most times which ticks me off.

I am also cheesed off with shoddy ports from developers. Friggin' idiots. After how many years, they still don't understand that it's easier to make PS3 the lead platform and then port over to the 360.

Even Heavenly Sword looks better than this pile of crap.

basically is the problem with the developer... they are too greedy... they want fast money... and dun want to learn frm Bandai Namco, tecmo or Square Enix. Make it Xbox360 exclusive for one year and grab the money frm M$ then develop a better version later. Sales in JP has proof that it works.

Now they want to fast fast earn money on both platform and still they dun at least do things like Eidos and Capcom did (making it as close as possible). End up giving crap to either one platform. So hurray for PS3 owners like us.

You Got Lombax, Bayonetta And Monkey In My Chrome
user posted image

Google Chrome recently updated itself with a bunch of new themes. I promptly chose butterflies — but you could chose Ratchet & Clank or Super Monkey Ball.

Ratchet looks a little ripped in his theme — which apparently was done by a Japanese artist, or perhaps just by somebody who knows their katakana. Monkey Ball looks a little more licensed and lot more orange. And either I've become warped by video game expectations, or Bayonetta's chest is looking a little flat.

If you happen to have Google Chrome, go check it out. And if you don't, I'm only half-okay with recommending it. On the one hand, I like the panel view of your commonly-visited pages. On the other hand, I'm keenly aware of the embarrassment you might suffer if four out of your right panels happen to be porn sites.

To be honest, the gameplay is really quite nice. I've to admit it although I'm not really a fan of action fighting games... but it really does look quite bad when things start to get busy on screen.

As someone mentioned, Heavenly Sword looks so much better although it's such an old game.

People are saying (or infact hiding from reality) that the demo is from the craptacular demo of Bayonetta which was only available to a couple of journalists at E3 2009.
And also claiming that everything will be ironed out and fixed by the time the game releases.

Here's my 2 cents on the demo.

-The game's smooth and the graphics are amazing. I dunno why but there seems to be a lag when bayonetta's running around,as in there's low fps. So you her "stutter" abit when you move her from a stationary position to a moving one. Im playing the ps3 version of the dmeo btw, but i dont see low fps during the cutscenes. Maybe its my eyes but i just dont see any major difference in quality of the cutscenes.

-Loved the fight where the enemy is in the background and his arm's in the same ground prespective as your character.Never before seen anything like this in a game.

-Easy level mode is too easy as all your moves become automatic. No real sense of achievement if all you spam is the punch button but you see your character doing sick moves.

-Best modes to play in the demo are the story mode on normal as well as the training level where right ater you practice the "kick " button. The demo lets you try out some of the moves avilable in game and i highly reccomend you to try out all the moves. Their pretty insane and easy to perform tongue.gif

-I noticed a secret during the loading between stages. When you can use bayonetta freely for about 3 secs until the loading ends.During this time, pressing the L2 will switch her guns to a katana. I cant really experiment with that since i only always have about 3 seconds only but so far the move i have done with te sword is a slash combo ended by a copy of dante's "million stab" move from the dmc series. Looks badass and i cant wait to use it on enemies when the game is released or when a new demo comes out. tongue.gif

All in all, this demo promises a must buy game (at least for me) and i cant wait for its worldwide release. smile.gif

Famitsu Awards Bayonetta A Perfect Score

user posted image

Japanese game magazine Famitsu has four separate critics score games on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best score. The four scores are then tallied, and 40 is perfecto.

Today, only eleven, well, now twelve games have been awarded the perfect score. The latest is multi-platform title Bayonetta. Multi-platform Bayonetta is the first game to appear on the Xbox 360 to receive this score.

To review, here are the previous 40/40 games:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
2. Soulcalibur (1999)
3. Vagrant Story (2000)
4. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003)
5. Nintendogs (2005)
6. Final Fantasy (2006)
7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008)
8. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)
9. 428 (2008)
10. Dragon Quest IX (2009)
11. Monster Hunter Tri (2009)

So no games in 2001, 2002, 2004 or 2007 got a 40/40, but three games in 2008 and three games in 2009 have? Either Famitsu thinks games are getting better or is giving out more perfect scores. Discuss!

And for those who care, Final Fantasy X was released in 2001, Resident Evil was released in 2002, Dragon Quest VIII and Gran Turismo 4 were released in 2004, and so on and so forth.

Once the actual scan of the score has hit online, we will add it to this post.

SOS:
Perfectooooooo

Zelda Ocarina of Time

would still score a high score even after 11 years. It is the most perfect game i ever play back then.

Bayonneta is so good??? it is even better than its source DMC.

If the score is true I really can't believe that they gave Bayonetta's graphic perfect score, I played the PS3 demo and the graphic was like on PS2, are they blind or what?

Famitsu is famous of being Japanese Game company's slave since late ps2 era.
Their marks only represents how much the game company juiced them for advertising.

most of the japanese gamers, especially hard cores, thinks famitsu is a rubbish.

Nicknamed the magazine GOMItsu

If there's any flaw in Uncharted 2, it's the storyline...
i like the first uncharted's story better.

But everything else, gameplay wise, graphics wise, major improvements.... minus the occasional freeze/hang

Dunno why people like to be so defensive,
it is already a well known issue if you google it.

sauce

even the first uncharted also freezess alot...
ND said they will revamp their coding so hopefully Uncharted 3 won't have the same problem.
Let's hope it's true.

Not sure this is correct, but I heard frame rate dropping can cause you two major slowdown? in this game:

1. Dodging enemies' attack

If you don't know already, let me then share some enlightenment. Gametrailers has been very prejudiced in their reviews for ps3 games. In fact, they had been caught twice red handed for putting up "malfuntioned" screenshots comparison revealing a better 360 version.
1. Grid - both screenshots were ps3 version
1. Xmen Origin Wolverine - both screenshots were 360 version
Go google it, you know that I ain't shitting.

For their current rating of 9.3, Gametrailers compared U2 with Gears2, and said 9.3 is about as high a score as a game like that is ever going to get. Gametrailers said they put a lot on emphasis on originality, and U2 has none.
Btw, this was the same guy who gave Halo 3 a 9.8. Go figure.

lol.... I myself gave U2 9.3 too.
And it is as high as I can score the game as well.

But to say U2 has absolutely no originality, is kinda off.

But lets not get off topic now shall we, Bayonetta thread to bring in U2. Chloe and Elena won't like Jeanne for being too hot.... whistling.gif

Hmmm fps rate? Well i dunno about final product but i was chianing like crazy when i play the PS3 demo. The first time i played it, i thought there was some serious framerate probs while baynetta was running. I was like wtf?! Run also got fps drop??? But after multiple playthroughs, the problem went away on its own. So till now i have not noticed any fps drop from playing the demo. smile.gif

I dont have too keen sense to spot out the errors for the game as i just love being a gamer and i love bayonetta. So,forgive my ignorance but as long as its not blatanly noticeable,i may just overlook it. smile.gif

Hope the rest of you can find some sort of peace with this game and come to terms hehe.

It's not the problem went away.
Its your eyes which got used to the framerate drops and screen tearing, making you think they're non-existant.

not purposely bringing in FF13 topic but
from what we can see from the trailer, there's absolutely framedrop issue for FF13 too,

maybe for both console.

why? simply because they can't fully utilize Cell processor because of keeping a portion for XBOX360 porting, OR, Japanese game makers simply don't have skills like Europe do, they're suck and no improvement since last generation. (I MEAN LOCAL BASE STUDIO)

maybe the frame rate issue is like those old Musuo series where u see the ppl slow down when there are too many soldier.

Choppy frame rates during which fight scene?

For me, i am quite happy with the smooth frame rate.
Just un-happy about the graphic detail compare to 360 version.

Good point but in all honesty, though it may sound impossible of programming errors "going away by itself", i really cannot see the drop in fps anymore. I mean serious, ylwhen i first played it,it was blatantly obvious, like i've have to be 50% blind not to see it,but then i went and tested the game again 10 minutes ago, and truth be told i dont see the drop. Ridiculous answer you say, but im just reporting what im seeing. smile.gif

*
9.3 for U2 is decent, but I don't think you gave Halo 3 a 10.0 doh.gif

U2 is definitely not the most original game, but Halo 3 is even more so sad.gif

Also, they want people to respect their opinion, but cannot respect the opinion of the guy who gave U2 21/20 rolleyes.gif sweat.gif

Damn, confirm the voice acting for bayonetta is full english.that means we can play the game and understand the story fully. But cant read the description for items. Its the same as the jap version of devil may cry 3, i could play it all the way through and get the story but didn tknow what some items were meant for. tongue.gif

The prob now is,when the game releases next year,it will be 100% english. And i think it will be cheaper than rm 290. So, why would i wanna pay for more now when i wont even udnerstand what their writing means when the english version comeso ut in january, costs cheaper and is written in english?

Guess this version is very unappealing toward non-jap ps3 owners. sad.gif

Because originally they didn't want to make it for the PS3.
When they head out for SEGA to be the publisher, obviously SEGA says it needs to be on the PS3 or else no funds for them.

Is Bayonetta A Giant?

user posted image

Okay, let's say, for snots and giggles, that the little girl Bayonetta meets is 100 centimeters tall. How tall would that make Bayonetta?

The Japanese internet, bless them, has created this comparison. The little girl is 100 centimeters. A female is 160 centimeters and a male is 170 centimeters.

And by the totally unscientific, totally unfounded assumption, that Bayonetta would be 250 centimeters high — That's over 8 feet tall! Eight feet or over 11 heads high. Eleven heads? Even SNK characters max out at about 8 or 9 heads high.

The game is coming out today.

Need some gamers here to comment on whether the final product is BETTER then the demo (frame rate issue etc.).
