QUOTE(Firdaus92 @ Jan 30 2009, 11:23 PM) anything that we do, if become melalaikan, will be haram.. such as guitar. only haram if melalaikan. correct me if i'm wrong- i don;t think the poker game in the facebook is haram. because not involve in betting our own money. |

Actually, most scholars agree that it is Haram. The reason being that it is a path. You might at first start by playing as just a game. But when you start playing more often, and you realize how good you have become, it becomes easier for Shaitaan to tempt you to play for real money.
Look at the wisdom of Allah in the Quran, he does not just say "ABC is Forbidden". He usually says, "Avoid...", "Do not go near...". A good example is Zinaa (fornication), when we are told, do not go near Zinaa. Go near zinaa refers to anything that might lead to zinaa, e.g. being alone with a non-mahram member of the opposite sex. (non-mahram means someone you are allowed to marry), staring at women (besides your wife) with desire...these are all things which can lead to Zinaa. Likewise, just because we remove the element of money, does not make Poker a halal game. Believe me, talking from experience, once the you become good, you will start finding it boring and need bigger challenge, and more excitement. Before you realize, you are doing haraam. So, whether you agree it is haram or not, you cannot disagree that it is wiser to avoid it. PS : You can google, and you will see that all those who say it is not haram are just laymen like us, but majority of real scholars say it is haram. As for zizzat, your brother has made a very very dangerous statement. Just coz it is one way gambling (win, or not lose), does not make it halal at all. |

a game is a game. gambling is when it involves something of value (money). Gambling is haram, as simple as that, no need twisting around, gambling is still haram.
regarding scholar saying it haram, i think it depends on perspective. Even islam has mazhabs depend on the ulama perspective. To me (who is no scholar), the thought of doing something bad is not yet sinful (but in no means should be done), therefore playing poker with the true intention of just playing games is not haram. Gambling is very subjective, you can play uno and still gamble if you want, does it make uno haram?? just my views. cheers. This post has been edited by attahun: Mar 30 2009, 12:15 PM |

CHESS! also, many Muslims (i actually didnt know this, but apparently there are many) think that MUSIC is haram.MUSIC! they say it makes you stray away from the path of Islam. they say listening to it,you can feel the devil take control of you. lolwut? anyway, jokes aside, and my point is that it's ultimately a personal choice. some see it as being able to lead you astray (in terms of religion) while some see it as just an activity. personally i see nothing wrong with playing poker or any other gambling game that doesnt involve money. im a scrooge,so gambling money isnt something i look forward to besides,IMO,if you have no self control over your belongings, then you deserve to lose them, anyway This post has been edited by Mgsrulz: Mar 30 2009, 12:13 PM |

haram in sense of risking the financial ..... (morally bad)
but SO WHAT? muslim buy more SPORTS TOTO than anyone else in malaysia (according to local newspapers in 2007) but without any cash, it felt like clicking endlessly without any aims .. there's nothing wrong to gamble money. everyone gambles something in their lives but i dun gamble coz the probability is too low. |

Haram can mean both prohibited and holy. See http://www.islamic-dictionary.com/index.php?word=haram
Word Meaning Haram (حرام) Grammar: word; (1) Prohibited, illegal. Mostly used in referance to actions as well as foods. (2) Sacred/Holy - as in Masjid al-Haram (The sacred mosque) in Mecca and within it is the Kaaba. |
