Seeking Zulkarnain

In a new documentary , a doctoral student tries to identify the real King Zulkarnain.

HISTORY is incredibly vast and complex, and much of its subject matter is constantly reviewed. The academic community continuously debates documented evidence, questioning if facts have been distorted for political purposes or if they are, indeed, the truth.

Because history is constantly being rewritten as new evidence is uncovered, PhD student Afareez Abdul Razak found the desire and urgency to uncover the answers to his questions.

The International Islamic University Malaysia student became especially interested in who King Zulkarnain really is. Since 2006, he has been trying to refute the fact that King Zulkarnain (as mentioned in the Quran) is not Alexander the Great, the Macedonian King commonly referred as Iskandar Zulkarnain in history books.

The student of Islamic understanding and Quranic studies was researching four kings of the ancient world – Namrud, Solomon, Nebuchadnezzar and Zulkarnain – when he noticed that according to the author of Sejarah Melayu, Tun Sri Lanang, the Sultans were descendents of Iskandar Zulkarnain.

Afareez explained: “Tun Sri Lanang had the best intentions, to give authority to the Sultan’s lineage, to unite the people. But this claim might not necessarily be the truth. This was previously brought up by Prof Dr Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (the Indonesian Islamic populist intellectual better known as Hamka).”

According to online encyclopedia Wikipedia, historically, Zulkarnain has been identified as Alexander the Great, and this remains the opinion of most secular historians, however contemporary Islamic scholars are divided on the issue, some identifying Zulkarnain as Cyrus the Great.

Afareez shares that the scholars identify three possible candidates as Zulkarnain – Alexander the Great, Cyrus the Great and the King of the Himyar Empire.

I thought it was told and proven a long time already that Alexander the Great is NOT Iskandar Zulkarnain? The quran version differs greatly to the one that we know as Alexander

intoxicants were not haramed during early Islamic years. As more Quranic verses were revealed step by step only then it was haramed. I'm not sure if intoxicants or alcohols were already haramed (through other messengers) during Alexander times. Religious scholars would now more.

But but.....

Islam didn't exist during the age of Alexander nor Cyrus, so the point is moot anyway.

well, u have to understand something here. Islam, Christianity and Judaism are 3 "versions" of similar religion, commonly referred to as the abrahamic religion. at one point in time, Judaism was the truth, then was updated by Christianity and eventually updated by Islam.

so yes, Islam has not existed during those years, but at least one abrahamic religion has.

There is always two sides or point of view when we talk about something or someone.

King Zulkarnain is the Islamic point of view. He was regarded as a hero, king of kings and even a prophet. So you will always hear nice stories of wisdom and good virtue and has the Quran as the supported documents.

And then you have Alexander the Great, which is the popular culture depicted by the imaginative hollywood producers. They might have gotten the stories from Roman popular culture, which was at the time was the enemy of all religions. I do not know whether they have supporting documents on this.

IMO Iskandar Zulkarnain or Alexander the Great is the same person. He was the greatest king in his time that rule most of planet earth, which was stated in Quran and I believe since I am a moslem. But sometime along the way the pop culture of Alex the Great was distorted by the Roman Empire to served its own purpose. That is why it is so greatly differentiated now between these two characters.

Again it is only an opinion, we have always have to be open minded about it thumbup.gif
