if i'm not mistaken that only happens teh first time you load a neighbourhood, cause it has to create all the related stuff. after that whenever you load a hood its pretty fast. even 1 gb of ram loads the game pretty fast for me, as long as i dont overload on mods/skins tongue.gif

some of the gameplay is so-so, but most of the expansions later on were quite okay, like OFB, FT, BV.

not only that, but people also play it for different reasons. i dont know about sims 3, but the sims 2 community is also filled with budding "architects" tongue.gif, and even crazy programmers who make awesome mods.
