dubious penalty ... converted by ronaldo

Not really dubious. Carrick was tripped and the tackle was right on the line. We were good value for the lead with the Ronaldo effort.

BTW, if we get a clean sheet today, do we get the all-time record? A Rangers keeper holds the record biggrin.gif

Dubious? I think it was pretty obvious Arteta caught Carrick with his trailing foot. Small contact, but enuff to tip him off balance. Rafa to start a rant on how many penos we get a season then?

The craziness has continued!

Benitez to host Football Crazy on Star Sports next season.

Neville and Park really work more harder on 2nd half, I don't know how many time Baines pass Neville on first half. sighs.

But Fellatio has done a great job drifting in and out, sucking defenders in.

NO!! He must stay as manager of Liverpool FC! laugh.gif

Gary and Park have been playing like idiots though when defending. Always try to sebok2 when someone already marking the attacker.. and left Baines behind all by himself.  vmad.gif

Yes, yes when Fellatio gobbles it up and spits in our faces, you'd be complaining neither tracked him up. One of Fletcher or Carrick need to pick him up.

5 points clear and we could be 7 points clear if Chelsea draw and we win that game in hand biggrin.gif

Great weekend for us but what happened to Gaz? Seemed to rush to the dressing room.

Disappointed a bit. Tevez was good, but wish he was a bit more aware of those around him and bloody pass the ball(and properly!). Berbatov was quiet, unused by the team. Gah!
*
I'm not disappointed. We've played several games back to back to back. We've had 3 games/week for a couple of weeks now. The players must have been feeling it, as did the Everton players. I think all this resulted in a scrappy effort with little pace, especially in the pedestrian paced second half. Berbatov, Park and Neville were below par but Carrick must have shat excellence in the morning to be able to come up with such a performance.

Liverpool deserved to win? How so? Yes, they threatened in the first half but no real clear cut chances. And in the second half, it was only after a cock-up from Mike Riley that Liverpool started imposing themselves.

If any case, we're still in just a good position for the league as we've been. Chelsea seem a bigger threat to us than Liverpool in all honesty. After losing to us at Old Trafford, Chelsea picked up a string of wins until yesterday whereas Liverpool.....well few wins followed by a few draws and a loss or two.

Besides, with fixtures piling up in February, we're better equipped to deal with the challenges on all fronts than them.

QUOTE(Hevrn @ Feb 2 2009, 11:11 AM)
True that. The sending off changed the face of the game imo. Lampard is far and away the best player for Chelsea atm, he's probably the only one playing with real heart. The challenge was a nothing one. 50-50 ball, Lampard lunges in, nicks the ball and gets kicked in the foot by Alonso. Riley rushed into a decision there. Lol at Mikel's reaction to the red though, on slow mo it looked hilarious. Guess Fergie, the "leader of the FA and referees" will not be to pleased with Riley. No bottle of wine for him then. biggrin.gif And that Bosingwa kick was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time.

Like I said before, Chelsea were always gonna be the bigger threat in the long run. Yes, Scolari is clueless, but the team knows what it takes to seriously challenge for the league up to the end, having done so for the last 4-5 years. This was probably the 2nd best result (or best some would argue) we could have gotten.

edit: Alien didn't like my post  sad.gif
*
Mikel's reaction was as good as Gary Coleman's! The funniest thing was that the linesman, right in front of it waved for a throw in! laugh.gif

QUOTE(Duke Red @ Feb 2 2009, 11:25 AM)
Lampard's red card was harsh no doubt but in the end, we showed more willingness to get forward. How often did you see Bosingwa or Cole making runs down the flanks? Did Anelka even manage to muster a shot on target? We've often disagreed on matters and I think we will again. I must admit that we were somewhat fortuitous but hey, we've been hard done by before as well. The last time Chelsea visited Anfield, Rob Styles awarded a penalty after Malouda jumped into Steve Finnan. Earlier this season, we had a clean goal disallowed against Stoke, denying us 3 points. Sometimes you get the run of the mill and sometimes you don't, I think you'd agree.

Anyhow these were the stats from soccernet.

Shots on Goal : Liverpool 25(9) - Chelsea 8(2). Corners : Liverpool 12 - Chelsea 1.

The posession count was pretty much even but we pressed higher up the pitch than they did. We got the ball into wide areas whenever possible but were lacking in ideas in the final third. I just find it hard to believe that we didn't go for a win after all the observations I've just made. "Deserved"? I think we all know now that in the end, the team that deserves to win is the one that puts the ball in the back of the net. Ceteris Paribus.

Sorry to go OT but I'm just responding to an issue currently being discussed.
*
Yes, I don't disagree. I mentioned that Liverpool threatened Chelsea and Chelsea didn't show real conviction to win the game. But Chelsea managed to absorb whatever you lot threw at them, although abysmally. I don't think Chelsea would have won the game even with 11 men, but whether they'd lose it, I am not convinced. I think Benitez would never have removed Mascherano from the game if it were 11 v 11.

I've always thought that 'a deserved victory' is more of a moral argument than a factual one. Was Lampard sent off? Yes. Deservedly so? No. Same case for me with Liverpool, but I'll admit that my opinion will be a little biased.

QUOTE(Wan @ Feb 3 2009, 01:10 PM)
As long as we can maintain/pick up our form, I'm not too worried, not yet anyway. Right now we're grinding out results. But we can play far better than what we've shown so far, definitely. We're playing in 3rd gear.

Liverpool, could trouble us a bit if they hang on till the final month. If they can keep their main players fit throughout and in form, they would definitely be there. If they get a really good winger or two, then they will consistently challenge for the title.
*
1) Being serious and not knocking Liverpool just for the sake of it.
2) Post starts here:

To be fair, as I've mentioned in previous posts, I still look at Chelsea as our main contenders. I have always believed that Scolari would have played a better brand of football if he had Robinho and Joe Cole on the flanks but given that one of them is injured fro the season and the other, isn't here, it's still rather quite impressive to see such a WEAK Chelsea (- Essien, Carvalho, Cole) team have always come back after being defeated by big teams (drawn 1 lost 5 against Big 4 teams)!

Liverpool on the other hand, with Torres (I can't remember any major injuries or omissions) are playing shite and have had trouble grinding out results and when they do get a big one, they rest on their laurels rather than go on ruthless title-winning runs. And in an event where Torres gets fatigued or Torres doesn't work in a game, whom do you bring on? icon_question.gif

My point exactly......

QUOTE(Fyrekat @ Feb 4 2009, 12:43 AM)
I agree that Chelsea ought to be Utd's main rival and contender for the title given that they have better players than us overall. Our starting 11 are no pushovers, but beyond that our quality drops off a lot compared to Utd and Chelsea.

This is the reason I question the timing of Keane's departure. I can see the economic ramifications of keeping him till the summer since he's already 29 and theoretically at his peak. His value ain't gonna climb, especially given that I think we had paid over the fair value for him. Yet, he's more established than the replacements we have. So this is certainly a risky gamble.

Was it a mistake bringing Keane in? The boss thinks so.

Is it better to cut our losses now? He thinks so too.

You're right, we've not been playing well eventhough we've been able to get results. Good enough to be in 2nd place but not enough to be 1st at this stage.

As for Torres, he has not started many games for us this season due to hamstring injuries (twice!) coming back from friendlies. He has definitely been missed.
If as manager you realise you've made a mistake, how long do you wait before taking some decisive action? Do you wait till the end of the season and possibly let the mistake compound itself or do you amputate now?

I agree, from where I'm sitting 6 months is an awfully short time to pass judgment. But I'm sitting at home and not at the training ground, so I'm not privy to all the details of what's going on there.

Plus as was pointed out in some of the replies in the Pool thread, Keane is 29. Time's not on our side as far as gambling on giving him more time to fit in and waiting to offload in the summer. We paid 20M for a finished and polished product but it did not work out as expected. With Vidic, Evra and Henry (when he joined the Gunners), there was time to gamble since they weren't expected to be the finished product (if I'm not mistaken). And they weren't 29.
*
Chelsea's current starting 11 is weak but at full strength, it's better than Liverpool's or Arsenal's (I'm including Queresma into Chelsea's starting 11). I don't fancy Liverpool's 11. I think Aurelio, Carragher [at RB], Kuyt, 1 of Benayoun and Babel are weak links and still think Liverpool will struggle to break teams down. You lot will have trouble losing games but in equal measure, trouble winning them as well. I'm not convinced Chelsea would have lost with 11 men.

Problem with Keane's departure is that if Liverpool don't sell him now, they'd never be able to sell him back to Spurs and realistically, they are they only club who'd be daft enough to spend money on him at 29. They needed someone for the relegation fight with Defoe out and he does the job. And no, it was never going to work out from Day 1! Don't mention six months, Rafa from the start, never had Keane in his plans. If he were never given a chance, how'd you expect him to shine. Whenever Keane went on a run, he'd be placed in cold storage. How is that beneficial to Keane? Rafa, to me, orchestrated Keane's exit by making him look a worse player than he actually is.

QUOTE(Fyrekat @ Feb 4 2009, 11:36 AM)
Why is it that some people have to come up with some disparaging remark whenever a decent discussion is ongoing? Given that our football clubs do interact with each other, it's not like any discussion regarding the other club is going to be truly off topic.

Edit: I notice the remark I'm referring to seems to have been deleted.

Some people might consider that OT as well, since there seems to be this cloud of M.U.S.T is exclusive to Utd only and all other talk is cause for walking out.
*
Errm I am not sure who that post is directed to but if I think it's directed to a particular person that I think it is, I do agree. It's too rigid. I always thought M.U.S.T is a place where M.U fans talk about anything football and not just anything United. Especially given the league standings, Liverpool's form and transfer dealings do have a bearing (however insignificant tongue.gif) it has. Heck, let's talk about Inter winning F all so far laugh.gif

Gulp, does this mean that we're obsessed?  biggrin.gif Agree with Kobe. MUST to me is an avenue where United fans share their views on football in general, obviously from a United fan's perspective. Therefore, rival fans shouldn't expect nice things to be said about their club, like how Rafa is the best manager for Pool, like ever.
*
And you're telling me on a Sunday morning, you wouldn't go to Sky or Soccernet to check who's at the top of the table? biggrin.gif They are in equal measure as obsessed with out 17 as we are about their 18. Both parties just too shy to admit the mutual obsession wub.gif

And please lah, LYN fans need to use their heads. You go to RAWK and you hear someone calling Ferguson a blue-nosed cnut, smile. You go to the Caf and hear someone hoping Liverpool gets relegated, smile. It's better than the piss poor attempts of the rivals' here insulting one another 'glory hunters.' Jesus, by that definition, any supporter of any big four clubs under the age of 20 is a glory hunter? laugh.gif
