I agree that Chelsea ought to be Utd's main rival and contender for the title given that they have better players than us overall. Our starting 11 are no pushovers, but beyond that our quality drops off a lot compared to Utd and Chelsea.
This is the reason I question the timing of Keane's departure. I can see the economic ramifications of keeping him till the summer since he's already 29 and theoretically at his peak. His value ain't gonna climb, especially given that I think we had paid over the fair value for him. Yet, he's more established than the replacements we have. So this is certainly a risky gamble.
Was it a mistake bringing Keane in? The boss thinks so.
Is it better to cut our losses now? He thinks so too.
You're right, we've not been playing well eventhough we've been able to get results. Good enough to be in 2nd place but not enough to be 1st at this stage.
As for Torres, he has not started many games for us this season due to hamstring injuries (twice!) coming back from friendlies. He has definitely been missed.
If as manager you realise you've made a mistake, how long do you wait before taking some decisive action? Do you wait till the end of the season and possibly let the mistake compound itself or do you amputate now?
I agree, from where I'm sitting 6 months is an awfully short time to pass judgment. But I'm sitting at home and not at the training ground, so I'm not privy to all the details of what's going on there.
Plus as was pointed out in some of the replies in the Pool thread, Keane is 29. Time's not on our side as far as gambling on giving him more time to fit in and waiting to offload in the summer. We paid 20M for a finished and polished product but it did not work out as expected. With Vidic, Evra and Henry (when he joined the Gunners), there was time to gamble since they weren't expected to be the finished product (if I'm not mistaken). And they weren't 29.
Chelsea's current starting 11 is weak but at full strength, it's better than Liverpool's or Arsenal's (I'm including Queresma into Chelsea's starting 11). I don't fancy Liverpool's 11. I think Aurelio, Carragher [at RB], Kuyt, 1 of Benayoun and Babel are weak links and still think Liverpool will struggle to break teams down. You lot will have trouble losing games but in equal measure, trouble winning them as well. I'm not convinced Chelsea would have lost with 11 men.
Problem with Keane's departure is that if Liverpool don't sell him now, they'd never be able to sell him back to Spurs and realistically, they are they only club who'd be daft enough to spend money on him at 29. They needed someone for the relegation fight with Defoe out and he does the job. And no, it was never going to work out from Day 1! Don't mention six months, Rafa from the start, never had Keane in his plans. If he were never given a chance, how'd you expect him to shine. Whenever Keane went on a run, he'd be placed in cold storage. How is that beneficial to Keane? Rafa, to me, orchestrated Keane's exit by making him look a worse player than he actually is.
